It’s official! Our suburban property has earned another certification, a proud symbol of our commitment to what I fondly call “Gardening for the future.” Just as my husband and I took care of our kids when they were babies, we are still ‘taking care’ of them—and all of humanity—by fostering biodiversity in our little corner of the world. With each native plant, I’m nurturing a more sustainable environment, creating safe havens for pollinators and wildlife alike.

We are developing wilderness at a rapid pace, often with no regard for the delicate ecosystems we displace. But even the smallest yard has the potential to restore balance, to serve as a sanctuary for native species, and to help rebuild what we’ve lost. Every plant I nurture is a step toward a healthier planet for generations to come. 🌱✨

This certification reminds me that our actions matter, no matter how small. Join me in planting for the future—because a little native love goes a long way.

The neatest discovery so far in our “native habitat yard” an Acorn Plum Gall!!! Read on to discover exactly what this is and what’s inside it…

The Acorn Plum Gall is caused by a Cynipid insect wasp Amphibolips quercusjuglans. The common name of this gall is reflective of both its color and where it grows on an oak. This gall is reddish in color and slightly speckled, and looks very plum-like in appearance. It also grows attached to an acorn or twig with acorns on an oak tree.

Cynipid wasps are a large family of insects that cause many different types of galls to form on tree and plants. Adult female wasps lay eggs on leaves, twigs or other parts of plants which also causes swellings around the immature larva to form, producing a gall. In essence, part of the life cycle of this wasp is spent inside this gall. As the larva begins to mature, the gall will fall off and/or open up and allow the mature insect to vacate the gall.

Drone view of our 2023 backyard garden. A mix of native Michigan plantings, perennial flowers and perennial and annual edibles. The biggest changes of 2023 was the addition of a mini prairie planted with Michigan native plant plugs from . We added this space to as well. It’s approximately 700sqft of native prairie plants! So exited tk watch it mature! Next season this will be full of green and the mulch will be less visible.

TIP: Save your largest garlic heads as seed garlic for next years crop. I pulled the 5 big gray heads from this harvest, each have around ten cloves. That’s about fifty garlic heads that will grow for next years harvest. Plenty for our family of six. We grow hard neck garlic which is great for our climate in SE Michigan. This is a mix of Red Chesnok and Music garlic.

Out with the mums and IN with the ASTERS 😍 These Smooth Asters were planted this spring as part of our new prairie garden in our backyard. Aren’t they gorgeous?!
A little more about Aster laevis:
“Smooth Aster is a hardy plant that defies frost and keeps on blooming, often into November, with a profusion of lavender-blue, star-like flowers. The yellow flower-center turns reddish, later in the season. The leaves are smooth to the touch which makes this species different from most asters. Attractive to butterflies seeking nectar in the fall, it's also a host plant for the Pearl Crescent butterfly and the Wavy-Lined Emerald moth.”

Yes it’s that color irl. You’re looking at gorgeous Lanceleaf Coreopsis!
—————————————————
More about it courtesy of : Lanceleaf Coreopsis blooms for weeks on end, creating a fantastic early summer display of golden yellow flowers. Butterflies are regular visitors, and songbirds feed on the ripe seeds in late summer. This durable plant grows in any well-drained soil, and exalts in dry sandy soils.

Host plant for several small species of moths, including the Wavy-Lined Emerald. As many as 22 native bee species rely on plants in the Coreopsis genus.

Quick walk back to the Trillium spot, and it was blooming!! This spot is a remnant wooded area of Canton. This wasn’t some far off place, it was literally a 10 min walk from my front door. So many spring ephemerals!!! All this beauty in the middle of suburbia 🏘️ Many are unaware of the hidden gems that are right outside their door steps. Plant blindness is a real thing… I used to be plant blind but now my eyes are wide open!
1. Hit the jackpot finding a species of Trillium!! Not sure what specific species this one is. Could be a Trillium sessile (toadshade) or Trillium cuneatum (Little sweet Betsy) Any guesses?
2. Claytonia virginica - Virginia Springbeauty
3. Erythronium americanum - Yellow Trout Lily

Amazing weather here in SE Michigan. My husband and I went for a long walk with the dog this evening. We spied this beauty right off an asphalt path that goes through a remnant woodland area in the middle of suburbia. My hope is our township preserves and protects our wild spaces. This is a species of Trillium not sure what kind… do you know?

We got hit hard in Michigan with the ice storm this week. Our power has been out since Wednesday evening. The next morning when we awoke from the worst of the storm everything was encased in 1/2-3/4 inch of ice. It was beautiful and yet so destructive. I snapped this photo of our native rose shrubs hibs that morning. ♥️ The American Robins were pecking away the ice to eat that morning. Did you get hit with the ice?

Have you ever heard of the Butterfly Effect? A summary of the theory is that small changes can lead to big impact.
Just take a look at this little guy that is sitting on my finger. This is a Monarch butterfly. One day I decided I was going to slowly switch over my traditional suburban landscaping to pollinator attracting native plants. I planted a few milkweeds in my front garden in 2019. Which lead to Monarch butterflies to laying their eggs on that milkweed. This butterfly is alive because I decided to plant milkweed in my garden!

This is change folks, WE make change. 🌱

You don’t have to have 5 acres. You don’t even have to have own land to make this positive change. You can do this from an apartment balcony, grab some pots and plant some native plants! 🌱 - Marisa
