National Service Dog Month
It is time to recognize and honor the service dogs who dedicate their lives — and sometimes even risk their lives — to help human beings. Service animals can provide companionship, help us with physical or mental illness, live to serve, protect, and assist their people and much more . Guide dogs, service pets, search and rescue dogs, military working dogs, and assistance animals are awesome!!
A local program, CHIP (Canines Helping Independent People), trains dogs to become service and therapy dogs for those in need and I am honored to be their veterinarian.

National Farm Safety and Health Week
This week highlights the safety and well-being of the people who work in the agriculture industry.
Did you know that the fall harvest is the one of the busiest times of the year for our farmers.
Did you also know that "agriculture industry is consistently at the highest risk for occupational injuries and fatalities, with 453 fatalities in 2021, or an equivalent of 19.5 deaths per 100,000 workers."
Let's give a "Shout out" to all the agriculture workers. Please stay safe!

For many areas of the country, the fall harvest season is one of the busiest, but also one of the most dangerous for our nation’s farmers and farm workers.

Happy Cat Month
CATalyst Council created this event to spread the word about the health, welfare, and value of companion cats. Often, cats are viewed as self-reliant, aloof, and less in need of medical care than dogs. The aim of this event is to counteract these stereotypes and ensure cats are well cared for, enriched, and receive the preventive care they require. This month highlights the importance of our cat's physical and emotional well-being and educates us on signs of unhealthy behavior or illness.

National Iguana Awareness Day
Iguanas are some of the largest lizards found in the Americas, with their whiplike tail making up about half of that length. They are native to Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Like other reptiles, iguanas are cold-blooded, egg-laying animals with an excellent ability to adapt to their environment.
Iguana species vary greatly in size, color, behavior, and their endangered status in the wild. Some, like the green iguana, are quite common; others, like Fiji’s banded iguanas, are endangered. Iguanas native to San Diego County are the desert iguana and the chuckwalla.
As a pet, they require time and a high level of care. The feeding and housing requirements must be met to keep them happy and healthy. Some will grow large and are extremely powerful. They must be handled correctly.

Iguana CLASS: Reptilla (Reptiles) ORDER: Squamata FAMILY: Iguanidae SUBFAMILY: Iguaninae GENERA: 8 SPECIES: 35 currently recognized ABOUT Chuckwalla iguanas are native to the deserts of the Southwestern US and Mexico. Pet Insurance is one of those things we forget about until we need it. This month highlights how important insurance is in many aspects of our lives.
Are you the pet owner who would go the ER or to a referral veterinary hospital? If you are, look into pet insurance. There are three types of pet insurance: accident-only plans, accident and illness plans and preventive care add-ons.
Pet insurance plans offer different coverage levels to meet your budget.
Most of the pet insurance companies websites will allow you to enter your info about your pet and give you information on cost.
Check out these websites for more information to determine if pet insurance is right for you.

Pet Safety Tips for Labor Day Weekend
If you are celebrating Labor Day this weekend, have fun, stay safe and keep your pets safe.
1. Identification (microchip or collar) in case your pet gets lost.
2. Watch the temperature outside. It can still get too hot for our pets especially the asphalt.
3. Keep sunscreen and bug spray away from them. Never apply sunscreen or insect repellent to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals.
4. Keep matches and lighter fluid out of reach.
5. Feeding people food to your pets. Any changes to your pet’s diet can result in severe digestive ailments. Of course,no raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate and sugar-free products made with the sweetener xylitol, and never leave alcoholic beverages unattended where your pet can reach them.
6. Don't forget the hot grill.
7. If you have people over, make sure the visitors including children aren't causing your pet to be anxious.
8. Keep your pet in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area if there are fireworks.
9. Never leave your pets unsupervised around the water. Use a life jacket.

It’s time to say goodbye to summer! Before running off to block parties and barbecues with your four-legged friends, make sure you know these tips and tricks for keeping them safe during Labor Day festivities.

National Bring Your Cat to the Vet Day
We want our cats to be healthy and live a long and happy life. 83% of cats visit the veterinarian before their 1st birthday, but over 50% don’t return until they become sick or are in pain. With regularly scheduled exams, your veterinarian can often detect conditions that may affect your cat’s long-term health.
Reasons why you should bring your cat to the vet:
* Cats age MUCH faster than humans.
* Preventive care is better than reactive care. Cats should be examined at least once a year and most should be seen twice a year.
* Cats are masters at hiding sickness and pain and signs can be subtle. Finding and treating illness early is best.
* Subtle changes can be an indication of a much larger
issue.
* Your cat may be overweight and in danger of health conditions. Health problems include diabetes, heart disease, shorter lifespan, and painful joint. We can determine if your cat is overweight and help you get your cat to its ideal weight.
* During your visit, you can discuss any behavior changes or concerns with your veterinarian.
Call your vet today to schedule your appointment. We have medications and other products to help calm your cat and decrease their anxiety.

National Check the Chip Day
Today reminds us to update your information for your pet's microchip. Microchipping helps us to reunite lost or stolen pets with their owners. But the chip is only as good as the information it contains.
Updating your pet’s microchip registration:
* If you don't know your pet's microchip, contact your veterinarian to find out.
* If your pet doesn't have a microchip, schedule an appointment with your vet. Don't forget to register the chip ASAP.
* Check your pet’s registration information in the microchip manufacturer’s database. If it is not up to date, access your account or create a new account. Make sure that all of the information, particularly your phone number(s) and address, are correct.

World Elephant Day is for all of us "to support organizations that are working to stop the illegal poaching and trade of elephant ivory and other wildlife products, protect wild elephant habitat, and provide sanctuaries and alternative habitats for domestic elephants to live freely.”
"The date, August 12th, was chosen to honor the iconic Asian elephant, which holds great cultural and ecological significance. The day provides a platform for organizations, governments, and individuals to come together, share knowledge, and engage in initiatives aimed at protecting elephants and their habitats."

International Cat Day
Today we recognize one the oldest and most beloved pets. Started by the International Fund for Animal Welfare and other animal rights groups in 2002, to celebrate the most popular pet on the planet. Owning a cat has been shown to improve mental health and to relieve stress, anxiety and depression.
We love our cats. As any cat owner knows, cats are their own species. They are not dogs or humans. We want to make sure that we are taking proper care of cats and the importance of interpreting and appreciating all our cat's behaviors.
Post a picture of your cat for all to enjoy!

International Assistance Dog Week/Day
This week we celebrate and honor assistance dogs and educate the public.
was created to recognize all the devoted, hardworking assistance dogs helping individuals mitigate their disability related limitations. This week also is to raise awareness and educate the public about assistance dogs, honor puppy raisers and trainers, recognize heroic deeds performed by assistance dogs in our communities.
An Assistance dog helps their person in their daily life and often improves their freedom and independence. Types include Guide Dogs, Hearing Dogs, and Service Dogs.
What should I do if I meet a service dog team?
1. Do not distract the dog or interfere with his job.
A distracted service dog could slip up on a key part of his job and put he and his partner in danger. Some things that can distract a service dog are:
- Calling to the dog
- Making kissy, barking or other sounds at the dog
- Petting the dog without permission
2. Do not be offended...
If a service dog handler will not let you pet his or her dog or doesn’t stop to chat.
3. Never offer food to a service dog without first receiving permission from his handler.
4. Offer help but do not insist.
If a service dog handler rejects your offer to help, please respect his or her wishes.
5. Treat service dog handlers with dignity.
Speak to the handler, not to the dog. Speak to the handler as you would anyone else and do not ask personal questions about his or her disability.
6. Don't say your own pet is an assistance dog unless it has been trained and it is one.
7. Do not photograph or video record a service dog team without permission.

National Mutt Day
Mutts are known by many names. Today we want to celebrate these lovable, unique pets that have come into our lives and hearts.
Today is to educate the public about the sea of mixed breed dogs that desperately await new homes and to celebrate the amazing characteristics that the mix of breeds creates in each individual dog.
Looking for a mutt of your own: Petfinder is just one of the many websites that list pets that are available for adoption in your area.
https://www.petfinder.com
Mixed breed dogs tend to be healthier, better behaved, they live longer and are just as able to perform the duties of pure bred dogs - such as bomb and drug sniffing, search and rescue and guiding the blind. There are millions of loving and healthy mixed breed dogs and cats sitting in shelters, who are desperately searching for a new home.

National Lost Pet Prevention Month
It is one of our biggest fears, your pet is lost. It’s hard to stay calm when your pet is nowhere to be found. Have a plan in place in case this happens to you.
Pet Hub Inc started this holiday to prevent pets from getting separated from their families every day. A pet gets lost every 2 seconds in the United States. This is very concerning information because only 1 in every 10 cases of lost pets will get reunited with its family.
Tips:
Microchip your pet
Collar with ID tags
Obedience training
Use a leash
Watch your dog when outside
If your dog is in the car, make sure to have control of the leash before you open the door.

Sunburn in our pets
Protect your pet from sun exposure
Our pets are at risk for sunburns and skin cancer with excessive sun exposure. So what can you do?
* Canines with pink or light-colored noses or thin, short coats are at a higher risk of developing sunburn and skin cancer.
* Walk your dog in the early morning or evening.
* Provide a lot of shade.
* Limit time in the sun. Don't allow your pet to be outside for long periods of time when the sun is the strongest. Usually between
10am-4pm depending on where you live.
* Use sun protective clothing for pets - rashguard shirts and visors
with UPF 50
* Use sunscreen on areas sensitive to sun damage - ears tips, nose, belly and other non-haired or thin haired areas. Test the sunscreen on an area and watch for adverse reactions.
* Use sunscreen approved for pets. Avoid any products that use zinc oxide and para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA)- it is toxic to pets.
* Doggles Sunscreen or Epi-Pet Sun Protector Sunscreen
* Doggles - helps to protect your dog's eyes from the sun rays
* Don’t shave your dog's fur short. A summer trim may be okay. Your pet's coat is a natural sun barrier.
* Brush regularly to thin out heavy fur to keep as cool as possible.

Feline Leukemia Day July 15th
Today we focus on cats with feline leukemia, one of the most common infectious diseases in cats, affecting between 2-3% of all cats in the United States and Canada. (often referred to as FeLV) and what animal shelters, veterinarians, caregivers, and pet parents can do to support them in their journey. Feline leukemia virus is Infection rates are significantly higher (up to 30%) in cats that are ill or otherwise at high risk (see below). The prevalence of FeLV in cats has decreased significantly in the past 25 years since the development of an effective vaccine and accurate testing procedures.

National Pet Fire Safety Day
The AKC has provided the following tips to help protect your home and loved ones from accidental fire:
* Extinguish open flames - Don’t leave your pets unattended around an open flame and make sure to thoroughly extinguish any open flame before leaving your home.
* Remove stove k**b- Be sure to remove stove k**bs or protect them with covers before leaving the house.
* Invest in flameless candles – These candles contain a light bulb, rather than an open flame, and take the danger out of your pet knocking over a candle.
* Avoid glass water bowls on wooden decks – The sun’s rays when filtered through glass water bowls can heat up and ignite the wooden deck. Choose stainless steel or ceramic bowls instead.
* Secure young pets- Especially with young puppies, keep them confined away from potential fire-starting hazards when you are away from home such as in crates or behind baby gates in secure areas.
* Consider using monitored smoke detectors - Monitored smoke detectors, which are connected to a monitoring center, allow emergency responders to be contacted when your pets are trapped. These systems provide an added layer of protection beyond battery-operated smoke alarms.
* Affix a Pet Alert Window Cling – Write down the number of pets inside your house and attach the static cling to a front window. This critical information saves rescuers time when locating your pets. Make sure to update the number of pets listed.

Shark Awareness Day
Marine conservation groups celebrate this day every year in observance of sharks and the essential part they play in the marine ecosystem. Shark Awareness Day is about educating others about the role of these majestic marine creatures.
Sharks are adept predators of the ocean realm, but they are not our enemies. In truth, sharks have more reason to fear us. Humans kill nearly 100 million sharks every year – an average of 11,000 sharks per hour.
They are critical to keeping ocean systems healthy – removing the weak and sick of the sea and keeping populations fit, resilient, and strong. Without sharks, entire ecosystems can collapse, changing the structure of ocean food webs and threatening our food supply, future security, and the resilience of the entire system to adapt to human changes.
