Horses in for the day will go out tonight

The weather has been cold and wet lately and certainly more "winter like" but the warm weather will return. When it does, you will undoubtedly pull off those blankets and be stunned to see that your horse's body shape is a bit different than what you remembered from the fall. Sure you put blankets on and off periodically during the colder weather but you are usually not taking too long to asses body condition and, with all that winter hair, its sort of difficult to know what's going on weight-wise with our horses until they start shedding out in March. Some will have benefitted from less work and more winter feed and will be heftier, some will have suffered from less turn out and sparse grass and will be thinner. Getting and keeping tract of your horse's weight is a great way to stay on top of body changes regardless of the weather or hair coat. Accurately knowing your horse's weight allows you to make better feeding decisions and to monitor seasonal changes and correct either overweight or underweight conditions before they become a problem. A large animal scale is the best way to get an accurate measurement but is not very practical. Weight tapes are practical but not that accurate-there is so much variation in where the measurement is taken and tapes do not take a horse's length of leg into consideration so a big barreled pony may "tape" the same as a thinner and much bigger thoroughbred. But there is a better way to calculate equine weight that is both practical and more accurate. Measuring the heart girth (just like you would do with a standard weight tape) and measuring the body length (chest to rump) and then using the formulas provided will give you your horse's weight. A standard construction or sewing tape measure will work fine and having a more precise weight will also help you correctly deworm or treat your horse with any medications that it may need. Try out this "better way to weigh" and don't forget to record it!

Just a heads up that the horses will be in Saturday night with the heavy rain and possible storms coming through. The outdoor will be closed Saturday and Sunday with all the rain.
