Obesity affects 59% dogs and 61% of cats in the US according to the AVMA.
Obesity can lead to a shortened lifespan. One study found a nearly 2 year decrease in life expectancy. There are many factors to the problem such as genetics and metabolism, but we can still affect some causes. Overfeeding and too many snacks/treats. We promise they will love you, even if you don't give them the cookie!!

Dog Bite Prevention Week!
One of the most common misconceptions is that a wagging tail equals a friendly dog. A tail wag means a dog is anticipating an interaction. It does not mean that interaction will be a good one!

We think you should know what is happening in the veterinary political landscape that will affect the health and safety of you pet.
We've been posting about the actions of large veterinary corporations and the two bills they are trying to make law in states across the country. Many ideas that sound good initially can have devastating long term consequences. We believe this will be the case with both proposed bills.
1) To create a midlevel practitioner who is a technician but allowed to perform spays and neuters (see previous post for details) and 2) to change the legal requirements for veterinary telemedicine.

Corporations want to allow veterinarians to diagnose and prescribe medications through telehealth without ever having performed a physical exam in person. This might sound handy, but the risk to our pets is incredibly high. Misdiagnosis, improper medications and medication doses are the likely outcome. Our pets can't talk and tell us about their symptoms like people can. Veterinarians have to rely on physical exam findings and tests to arrive at the best diagnosis. A process that is already challenging and can't be adequately accomplished through a video chat. Telehealth has it's place, we use it everyday through photos and videos. But this is best reserved for patients and problems the veterinarian has already seen and diagnosed in person, and now are doing follow up care and management.

So why are corporations pushing this change? Money, of course. One veterinarian can chat with a lot more clients in one day than they could physically examine. Telehealth might someday allow better access to veterinary care to those with financial constraints, but the level of care can only be substandard if there is no physical exam taking place. We believe in taking the best possible care of our patients, and now in educating our clients and the public in general about the potential changes coming and the risks they may pose.

Why does it matter if your veterinarian is corporately owned?

Large veterinary corporations are currently pushing 2 devastating bills through state legislatures across the country.
One such bill will allow the creation of a midlevel practitioner. Midlevel practitioners would be technicians who will be allowed to perform spays and neuters. They have not gone to vet school. Have no deep understanding of anesthesia, and yet will be allowed to perform surgery! Anesthesia is complicated and carries inherent risks… this position will increase that risk. So why would corporations push for this change? Because this move will save these corporations money. They can see more patients and pay the midlevel positions less than they would pay veterinarians. These companies do not advertise that they are corporately owned. Will they also hide who is doing surgery on your pet? While not yet taking place in Georgia, this is happening right now in Florida. Regardless of how things change in the future, Cherokee Animal Hospital will do everything we can to always put the health and safety of your pet first.

We think you should know...
There are only a handful of veterinary clinics in the Canton GA area that are still independently owned. Most are now owned by large corporations.
This distinction has never been more important than now as these corporations are making pushing hard to make massive changes to the veterinary industry that will directly affect the safety of your pet. Stay tuned as we explain more over the next several posts.

Recovering from surgery can sometimes be scary for some pets. At Cherokee Animal Hospital we strive to make the surgery experience as comforting as possible. We send pre-visit medications to help with anxiousness and pain control prior to surgery and after. We ask for a shirt with their owners scent for them to wake up to. Our nurses are dedicated to monitor anesthesia during the entire surgical procedure and sit with each patient as they wake up.

I'm a what?!!

Reposting: How accurate are dog DNA tests?

CBC’s Marketplace wanted to find out how accurate dog DNA tests are. The reporting team recruited two mixed-breed dogs, one purebred dog and a human, and sent their DNA to four dog genetic testing companies: Wisdom Panel, Embark, Accu-metrics and DNA My Dog.
Nearly all the results were different, even for the same dog—and the human was identified as multiple canine breeds—despite all the companies claiming nearly 100% accuracy.

It's starting to warm up out there...the transitions between seasons can hard for pets. They need time to acclimate to warming temperatures. It may only be 75 degrees but please proceed slowly when reintroducing your dog to outdoor activities. Keep water handy, and if they drop behind you on a walk, it's time for a rest!

Veterinarians are still trying to get the word out about Grain Free diets.
The word is…don't use them!
We are all just trying to make the best choice for our pets in an overwhelming pet food market. But, there is no medical or nutritional reason to use grain free diets in the vast majority of cats and dogs. There is big concern that these diets are linked to a specific kind of heart disease called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or HCM. We don't have all the answers yet. But in the meantime, it is safest not use grain free diets. If you want more information please visit this page: https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/doc/?id=8989590.
