I am down in Athens, Ga visiting some family. Last night I did a drop in at for an evening no gi class. They run a totally “ecological” approach to BJJ training. I have heard of it but don’t really truly grasp it. All I know is it was a great class. They are building killers here with their approach. There were 9 black belts in attendance last night and I had the pleasure of rolling 6 of them in a row. Needless to say my old ass is sore today. At no point did I ever feel like I was going to get needlessly injured. The environment was amazing and the people here are flat out good at Jiujistu. If you’re new to the area or passing through be sure to give them a try. I hope your cardio is good lol. Thanks again guys.
The power of doing nothing. Many of you k9 guys out there are struggling more than you even know. Your dogs never settle in the car or pace in the kennel when not at work. Long periods of down stay on a dog bed can clear up so many mental issues with your dog. Working dogs are good at doing a lot of things but they suck at doing nothing. So on your off time don’t think you need to “burn off” his energy with fetch non stop. Instead making him lay in a down for hours doing nothing. He will learn to self regulate. We call place the “behavior savior.” Remember guys; dogs are like men. Feed us and tell us where to be and it’s a great life.
Come train some dogs with me and a bunch of other great instructors
If you are coming to The Colorado K9 Conference but are still working on department paperwork or cannot pay until July 1, you can still fill out the registration form now and send it to me Then just explain payment on the form or in your email. That way you are assured a spot as we will most likely....
Coming to NY. Get signed up. Info is on the flyer. E Collar, Without Conflict, For Working Dogs. We are changing handlers lives in these seminars. We are currently at about 740 dogs that have been through. We will make you better and smoother with the e Collar. We will clear up relationship issues you have with your dog (some you don’t even realize.) We will show you scientific concepts you’ve never heard of. Come let’s work on that “sticky” out you all seem to have.
Pro Tip: Here af VanEss and at my pet location we use kibble to train dogs. For the most part we have been using Royal Canin because they have large pieces to use. Makes it so much easier. However the food is VERY greasy and is now like $110 a bag which is insane. Our friends at listened and made a food with larger pieces. It’s perfect for feeding or training. It’s their new 24k formula. The other great thing is it’s beef, bacon, and pork loin. No chicken. So you can basically use it for all the dogs you’re training. We have been using it for a month now and not one of the 45 dogs we have trained with have had a single digestive issue. Also it’s not greasy at all. It’s worth testing it out.
QUESTION: so many working dogs have seriously high possession. Toys and bite equipment. Why is it that most will auto spit at the car? Hold a tug until they die but drop it without even a command at the car. Let’s hear opinions
Yesterday was another great day of training with the guys here in Springfield. Huge leaps made which leads to clarity of task and not fog of power. We finished the day with outing of various toys. All dogs crushed it and never once on a high stim level. Today we put everything together and finish with getting verbal outs from bite work on every dog. Also at the end of the day yesterday I zipped down to check out Lincoln’s home. I love history and being a tourist
Another e collar without conflict seminar wrapped up. What a great 3 days it’s been. Great group of hard working handlers. They hustled and put out for me and the dogs got a crap load of reps in. There were a few dogs brand new to e collar and we got them all layered up just right. Got verbal outs from every single dog here as well. Next stop is Springfield, Illinois on Monday.
Bringing my e collar seminar to Rhode Island. I haven’t ever been there so I am looking forward to it. If you’re interested check on the contact info on the flyer. Let’s fill it up folks. Come get better
Another great E Collar, Without Conflict, For Working Dogs seminar in the books. Great group of handlers and dogs put in some awesome work. Thanks to for hosting me this week. Keep up the great work you guys are doing there. Next stop is Indiana in 2 weeks.

🚨 Episode 211: “Chasing the False Response in Detection” with Darren “DJ” Holmes
Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric & Ted , sit down with repeat guest, Darren “DJ” Holmes and chat about his background, his current work with dogs, and training them to detect fentanyl.
They also discuss changes in training and certification, such as eliminating aggression to gunfire and certifying dogs on ma*****na, the concept of false responses in dogs and how it relates to training and contextual learning. They explore the role of poor imprinting in false responses and the importance of understanding dogs' learning processes, including teaching target odor and generalization, shaping search behavior, the use of primary and secondary rewards, the emphasis on trained final responses, and the importance of teaching dogs to hunt. It also covers the impact of contextual learning, the process of reverse engineering the training, and the role of markers and cues. The conversation highlights the challenges of street performance and the pitfalls of using positive punishment. This part of the conversation explores the misconception of not rewarding on stops, the use of variable reward schedules for safety concerns, discrimination training to maintain search behavior, and the importance of accuracy in detection work. The discussion also delves into legal implications and case law related to cueing and handler intervention. The chat touches on conflict in obedience and relationship problems highlights the impact of handler behavior on the dog's search motivation. The conversation concludes with insights into search motivation and training expectations, as well as the effects of handler intervention and pressure on the dog.

Follow up from yesterday’s video post. This is Gringo. We are doing his heel in a sport type fashion. Just to show it honestly. We are still layering the e collar over everything like Xander. Still doing the down and motion and pick ups in different positions. The one main constant is we are REWARDING WHERE WE WANT HIM TO STAY. During the final segment we are working on the halfway down. That’s part of Ohio Cert and many others. We are starting the stim first then giving the command. It’s on a low stim. Many guys make the mistake of going too high and the dog just comes to you faster to turn it off. But you see when he does it we throw the toy at him or over his head. We don’t ever call him to a finish while we are teaching this. This took 2 sessions and NO ROPe-A-DOPE back tie. This works because the e collar has been properly overlayed on all ON commands and because we started with a distance sit to down with hand motions. #k9 #k9officer #k9oftheday #k9ofinstagram #workingdogs #malinois #malinoislovers #malinoisofinstagram
I know there are a ton of my followers that are forced to do school sniffs. Lockers and parking lots. To me it’s still the biggest waste of training days doing those. But I know many of you are stuck. Well if they want you to do the parking lot you should tell the SRO to do his job and get some intel. Then have him locate a target vehicle and have you sniff like 4 cars including the target (don’t tell you which one.) I find this type of training works best for those situations. Pitch the dog into the wind and let him hunt. DONT detail every car, you’re going the smoke him. Just let him hunt. If they want you to do the whole parking lot just start at the end of a row into the wind and let him work down the row. Go with him where he wants to go but let him in work. You’ll get better results.
Good morning everyone. Just wanted to share a quick little story that I learned over the weekend. Men and women in blue are out there every day changing lives sometimes for the worst but often times for the better. RIP Rick @anger_management297
