FYI...Here's an important update for Canton residents regarding Priority Waste taking over Canton’s waste hauling contract on August 1st.

February 23, 2024

Last week, a communication went out regarding Priority Waste taking over Canton’s waste hauling contract on August 1. We realize this change will generate many questions which is why we are developing a comprehensive public education campaign.

Unfortunately, since that communication went out, a lot of misinformation is being spread. While we are still working out the implementation details, here is what we do know;

• Collection days will not change. If your collection day is currently Monday, it will remain on Monday starting August 1.

• Priority Waste will continue to collect all garbage, recycling and yard waste on a weekly basis.

• Priority Waste will utilize the existing 64-gallon recycling carts, there will be no change.

• Priority Waste will provide 95-gallon garbage carts to each curbside collection address. We are investigating alternatives for seniors and those with disabilities. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

Residents should continue to check the FOCUS newsletter each month for details. In July, a full two-page flap will be dedicated to the implementation of Priority Waste. The goal of the flap is to address all questions and concerns before the August 1 switch.

Please continue to monitor our page for up-to-date information and visit www.cantonmi.gov/216 for current collection guidelines.

Canton Club 55+ and The Village Theater at Cherry Hill are partnering to honor area service men and women who have served or who are currently serving in the Armed Forces. “Canton is proud to present this special event, which is designed to thank, as well as support our area’s service men and women, and their families,” said Jennifer Galazka, Canton Club 55+ Recreation Specialist. “This special tribute will bring together the community for an afternoon of celebration and appreciation of those who have put themselves in harm’s way to protect our country.”

VA Ann Arbor Health System will also be onsite accepting donations throughout the event. Suggested items for donation include, but are not limited to NEW items in their original packaging: T-Shirts (sizes S-5XL); sweatshirts in all sizes (no hoodies, please); winter coats (all sizes); winter gloves, hats, and scarves; combs (4-inch size needed for inpatient use); deodorant, disposable razors; lotion; lip balm (Chapstick); and lap quilts (4' x 4' minimum size). 10/25/2023

Canton Township will hold a special naming of the Zibiwés Nature Area on Friday, October 27, 2023, from 1-2 p.m. This celebration will recognize the designation of 134 acres of undeveloped land as the Zibiwés Nature Area with special presentations from members of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Nation, as well as several tribal dancers from across the state accompanied by a rhythm drum. This special event will be held near the main entrance of the Zibiwés Nature Area, located on the northwest corner of Ford and Ridge Roads at 6125 N. Ridge Road in Canton, MI.

Join Canton Supervisor Anne Marie Graham-Hudak, along with Canton’s elected officials, the Board of Trustees, and members of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, for this festive cultural celebration. Featured presentations will include an invocation and prayer led by Elder Misho Donald Sumners, as well as an overview of the culture and heritage of the original residents and stewards of this area’s land provided by Madalene BigBear. In addition, several Indigenous American tribal dancers from across the state will perform to a rhythm drum during this special event.

As the Canton Township Board of Trustees and elected officials remain committed to protecting natural habitats and greenspace within the Canton community for the enjoyment of all, as well as for future generations, board members collaborated with the Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi Indians Representations Outreach Board on name recommendations, as well as the acquisition of cultural and heritage resources and information pertaining to the 134 acres of undeveloped land located at 6125 N. Ridge Road. The Zibiwés Nature Area’s name (pronounced ZEE-bee-wess) was ultimately selected based on the Bodwéwadmimwen Potawatomi language’s word for creek, since its landform topography includes a large section of Fellows Creek.

All public and media are welcome to attend this free event. This program will be held rain or shine. For additional information, please contact the Canton Parks office at 734/394-5310.
