Happy Pride!
Happy Pride month!
Pride is about remembering the struggle for acceptance and equality faced by members of the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s also a reminder of how far we still need to go to take a stand against discrimination and bigotry.
The fight goes on. But thankfully, so does the joy, love, and spirit of community that Pride represents. By spreading awareness and kindness, we can celebrate the diversity of the human experience and have pride in who we are.
To the LGBTQ+ community:
You’re loved. You’re seen. You’ve always belonged. ❤️🧡💛💚🩵💜🖤🤎
Happy Mother’s Day!
Happy Mother’s Day to all those fantastic moms out there!
We were fortunate enough to help these precious munchkins and their tired mommy make it into the world recently.
Paloma the west highland terrier presented to VEC in labor with a puppy in fetal dystocia. The puppy was lodged in the birth canal but because of its size was unable to pass.
Though impossible to tell if that puppy was alive, a quick ultrasound showed that the other puppy had a heartbeat and needed to get out as soon as possible. Paloma needed a c-section and thankfully Dr. Leshem was available to go directly into the surgery.
During the surgery, we were able to retrieve both the puppy in the womb and the one in the birth canal. While the one waiting in the womb arrived healthy, the one that had been stuck was a different story. After a lot of effort, our fantastic technicians were able to resuscitate the puppy and he was finally able to breathe on his own.
A gorgeous little girl and a bouncing baby boy were delivered to their very deserving mommy. Is there any better way to celebrate Mother’s Day?!?

This tiny little beauceron boy was born five days ago as part of a very hale and hearty littler of eight.
At birth, all the puppies appeared healthy. They vocalized with newborn puppy squeaks and chirps, then immediately latched on to mom for their first meal.
But, a day and a half later their owner noticed that this little boy seemed skinny. She had weighed all the puppies at birth, and when she weighed them again 24 hours later she saw that this pup had lost weight. For a two day old puppy loosing weight is a very bad sign.
The owner brought him to VEC where it was determined that he had a cleft palate. A cleft palate is a genetic deformity that is rather common in dogs. It results when the roof of the mouth fails to close fully during embryological development. The space that’s left between the hard and soft palates creates a “cleft.” This cleft doesn’t allow the puppy to form a proper seal around the mother’s nipple, which prevents it from nursing appropriately.
Cleft palate puppies require special care. They must be fed regularly with a tube every 2-3 hours for several months. This ensures that they receive enough caloric intake to survive and grow. Then once the puppy is older, it can undergo surgery to correct the cleft.
This baby pup has a long road ahead of him. But now that his owner knows the reason for his weight loss, she can make the necessary arrangements to ensure that he thrives. 💙
Tom presented at VEC last month with a dislocated hip. After seeing Dr. Armstrong discussed both medical and surgical options with Tom’s owners.
Many factors played into Tom’s owners’ decision. Due in part to his age, but more than anything due to the direction of the dislocation, VEC and Dr. Leshem encouraged Tom’s family to go in a direction other than surgery.
Dr. Leshem explained that by putting the hip back in place without surgery and then using "hobbles" bandages for three weeks, Tom would hopefully have a better (and easier!) recovery.
Thankfully that’s exactly how it worked out for Tom! His recovery may have taken a bit of time, but we can’t believe how far he’s come. Take a look at Tom now, he’s raring to to!

Meet Prince Lone Starr! This stunning boy has had an extremely rough time of it recently. Lone Starr was hit by a car and then abandoned here at VEC. He’s now been with us for over a week and while medically he’s doing great, his spirits have started to falter since his previous owners have not come forward to claim him. This poor boy just doesn’t understand why he was abandoned; especially after such a traumatic experience. It’s his previous owners’ loss, however, because we’re going to do everything we can to find him a wonderful new home.
Lone Starr has been an absolutely fantastic pup here at the clinic. He’s very easygoing and has been extremely affectionate with all our staff members. He’d like nothing more then to be cuddled up on our laps and giving kisses all day!
Because we don’t know his history we’re unsure how’d he be in a home with other dogs or cats but we can tell he’s a rather active pup that just LOVES to play.
We’re estimating that he’s about 5 years old. He’s vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped. He knows basic commands but could benefit from some more advanced training.
This boy deserves a fresh start with a family that’s willing to provide him the unconditional love he deserves. Please help us find Lone Starr his new forever home. ❤️
Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas shared with loved ones, both furry and non! 🎄🎁🎄
Turn your sound on to hear the sweetest little newborn sounds. This pup is hungry! 🔈
Meet Julia along with her newborn puppies which were delivered via c-section late last night at VEC after experiencing some delivery complications.
Thankfully Julia and all seven puppies were discharged very early this morning to recover at home. Julia is an experienced mom and was happy to take over from there! ❤️
