Agnes, the 7 year old guinea pig, presented to VEC when her owners noticed slight cracking sounds when she was breathing. With a previous history of an upper respiratory infection and hypothermia, her owners were rightly concerned.

After an initial exam with Dr. Petrauskas, diagnostics including radiographs were performed. The radiographs revealed a patchy unstructured interstitial pattern within her lung fields consistent with pneumonia.

Thankfully, Agnes’ owners noticed the small change in her breathing so quickly that the pneumonia was caught early on. Because of this and the fact that she was continuing to eat, drink, and play normally the infection can hopefully be treated quickly and efficiently with antibiotics.

Agnes was such a fantastic patient that we even decided to treat her to a nice manicure and pedicure while she was here. We wish her and her family the best and hope that she makes a speedy recovery! 💅🐹

Happy Pride month!

Pride is about remembering the struggle for acceptance and equality faced by members of the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s also a reminder of how far we still need to go to take a stand against discrimination and bigotry.

The fight goes on. But thankfully, so does the joy, love, and spirit of community that Pride represents. By spreading awareness and kindness, we can celebrate the diversity of the human experience and have pride in who we are.

To the LGBTQ+ community:
You’re loved. You’re seen. You’ve always belonged. ❤️🧡💛💚🩵💜🖤🤎

As a veterinary urgent care facility, the majority of our day is spent helping severely ill and critical patients.

People often assume that working in the veterinary field means spending the majority of our time playing with puppies and kittens. Though this couldn’t be further from the truth, as urgent care staff, we have an extremely important task and we’re proud of the role we play in our patients’ lives.

All that being said, it doesn’t mean that we don’t squeal in joy at the pure cuteness of a healthy little kitten on the rare occasions we do get to see one!

Peppercorn was brought to VEC after her brand new owner found her hiding under the stoop of a church. After determining that there wasn’t a mommy cat or any other kittens around, she was brought home and immediately adopted.

Peppercorn’s new family wasn’t able to get her into a general care vet for several days, and were concerned about her wellness in general since she had been alone outside for who knows how long.

Dr. Armstrong did an exam and found nothing immediately concerning about this little ones health. Peppercorn was sent home with instructions to give her plenty of food and love until she can get in to see a primary vet for vaccines and general kitten care.

We wish Peppercorn and her new family nothing but happiness in the future, we’re so glad she found a loving home!

Happy Mother’s Day to all those fantastic moms out there!

We were fortunate enough to help these precious munchkins and their tired mommy make it into the world recently.

Paloma the west highland terrier presented to VEC in labor with a puppy in fetal dystocia. The puppy was lodged in the birth canal but because of its size was unable to pass.

Though impossible to tell if that puppy was alive, a quick ultrasound showed that the other puppy had a heartbeat and needed to get out as soon as possible. Paloma needed a c-section and thankfully Dr. Leshem was available to go directly into the surgery.

During the surgery, we were able to retrieve both the puppy in the womb and the one in the birth canal. While the one waiting in the womb arrived healthy, the one that had been stuck was a different story. After a lot of effort, our fantastic technicians were able to resuscitate the puppy and he was finally able to breathe on his own.

A gorgeous little girl and a bouncing baby boy were delivered to their very deserving mommy. Is there any better way to celebrate Mother’s Day?!?

Everyone stop what you’re doing and look at this adorable face!

13 week old Maisy the Basset Hound came to the clinic when her owner found her chewing on the wrapper to her prescription medication.

Though her owner wasn’t sure if she actually ingested any, there was still concern based on Maisy’s behavior which seemed lethargic and painful.

After calling poison control it was recommended that Maisy’s family bring her directly to an emergency hospital to monitor vitals, run bloodwork, and administer therapies.

Thankfully, Maisy’s vitals were normal and no concerns were noted during her hospitalization. While her soreness and lethargy were certainly concerning, they were most likely side effects of her puppy vaccines given the day before instead of a toxic ingestion.

That’s not to say that Maisy’s stay here at VEC was boring though. Our staff took great delight in cuddling that squishy face and giving her lots of love and support while she was in our care.

It was a pleasure meeting you little Miss Maisy, we hope we don’t have to see you again anytime soon! 🐾💗

Auggie the 4 year old domestic shorthair is typically a very active, food-motivated girl. Yesterday, however, she wasn’t acting like herself. Her owner found her hiding next to pile of vomited undigested food and drooling heavily.

She was brought to VEC where she was examined by Dr. Rothert. Her initial examination revealed ulcers on Auggie’s tongue, hard palate, and caudal soft palate. These painful ulcers were the cause of this poor kitty’s symptoms but where had they come from?

While oral ulcers can be caused by various things, the sudden and copious appearance of Auggie’s suggested an acute reason to blame. Based on the ulcers and the results of Auggie’s bloodwork, Dr. Rothert was suspicious of a chemical ingestion. Unfortunately, Auggie’s owner didn’t know what she could have gotten into but did elect to hospitalize her for supportive care.

After arriving home, Auggie’s owner did some looking around and found a puddle of Chemcocide Ammonium Chloride Sanitizer spilled on the basement floor. Although unsure how it could have happened, it was clear that this was the cause of Auggie’s corrosive exposure.

Auggie’s owner called right away to let us know what she had found, and with help from the toxicologists at the Pet Poison Helpline, a treatment plan was put in place.

Please use Auggie’s story as a reminder to keep household cleaners and any other potentially toxic and/or caustic materials away from your pets.

Kizzi the very cute pug was brought to VEC for symptoms including a very distended abdomen, lethargy, and vomiting. Her owners rushed her right in, concerned at this sudden change in appearance and behavior.

Upon presentation, Dr. Lavoie recommended radiographs to help determine what was going on with Kizzi. Those radiographs showed that she was suffering from food bloat.

Kizzi was admitted for supportive care including intravenous fluids, frequent walks, and repeat radiographs.

After 24 hours, Kizzi was feeling much better and was able to go home with strict feeding limits and guidelines. Hopefully this puggy princess will stay out of the food bags in the future!

Celia presented to VEC when her owner noticed some odd behavior with her two year old kitty. Her symptoms included a drastic decrease in appetite and energy, falling over, and an occasional head tilt.

After the initial exam, diagnostics including bloodwork panels and X-rays were performed. Everything came back within normal limits and did not give a clue as to the cause of Celia’s vestibular ataxia.

Her owners elected to bring her home pending some further lab results. The next day Celia’s condition had worsened and she was brought her right back in for a recheck.

At that point a neurological consult was recommended. Celia’s wonderful parents brought her to Pieper Veterinary for an MRI where she was diagnosed with polyps and infections in both her middle ears and in her nasopharynx.

After some supportive care and antibiotics, Celia though still off balance, began to feel better and was able to return home. While she still may need surgery to remove the polyps, her owners are happy to have the problem diagnosed and a plan in place for her future care.

We’re so happy that we were able to play a part in Celia’s treatment and care and we wish her and her loving family all the best!

Can you believe that Miss Millie is 15 years young!

She came to VEC this week after her owner noticed her suffering from GI upset. We’ve seen Millie several times over the last twelve years, mostly for dietary indiscretions. She’s eaten everything from spare change to a copious amount of raw pumpkin guts. This sassy girl has a habit of doing exactly what her parents tell her not to.

Thankfully, this time Millie just needed some supportive care to get her through a bad bout of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis.

Millie certainly proves that age means nothing when it comes to the troublemaking antics our pups can get into!

Siblings Holden and River decided it would be a good idea to get their parents a porcupine for a holiday present. Unfortunately, their idea didn’t go quite as planned.

These two came into the clinic with faces, paws, and chests covered in quills. Thankfully, they managed to avoid any quills to their eyes, but the sheer amount embedded in their bodies numbered in the thousands!

Their de-quilling process took five technicians and Dr. Petrauskas several hours to accomplish, but when all was said and done they went home somewhat sore but feeling MUCH better.

Hopefully, these two troublemakers will stay away from spiky friends in the future!

This handsome kitty is Walter. He came to VEC after his owners noticed him straining to urinate over the course of a day.

Feline urethral obstruction is a treatable emergency, with a high rate of recovery despite the fact that it is a potentially life threatening condition. It’s caused my the formation of crystals in the cat’s urine that builds up and subsequently forms a block in the urethra.

Walter was admitted for urethral catheterization and unblocking. Unfortunately, in Walter’s case, he continued to block once his catheter was removed.

Because of this, Walter was taken to surgery for a perineal urethrostomy in order to prevent such obstructions in the future. This surgery creates a new urinary opening that decreases the length of the urethra and allows urine to bypass the narrowed region where blockages form.

Walter did great during his surgery and recovery and was discharged to his family yesterday. Despite everything, he was nothing but sweet and loving the entire time he was hospitalized. We’re so happy we were able to help this angel boy!

Have you heard of a pyometra?

Annie Oakley presented to VEC when her new owner noticed bloody discharge coming from her v***a. Three year old Annie had just been rehomed less than a week prior after her second failed pregnancy. Unfortunately, as an intact female, Annie was susceptible to pyometra.

Pyometra is a condition that occurs in female, unspayed dogs, where virulent material leaks from the uterus. The uterus then becomes infected, leading to life-threatening illness.

Although new to the family, Annie Oakley’s owner had a feeling that something just wasn’t right with her. Sure enough, after an exam with our doctor she was rushed right into surgery.

Annie is now spayed and thankfully on the road to recovery. She’s doing great after surgery, and we know she can’t wait to finally be able to settle into her new home where she’ll be loved and pampered as she deserves!

These caring and compassionate people are the reason why our hospital is able to provide the services we offer every single day. The bottom line is that without them, we’d cease to function.

Abbie is a recently adopted addition to her family. This sweet little girl presented after vomiting multiple times over the course of a day. Along with the vomiting, Abbie stopped eating and became extremely lethargic.

Based on the symptoms and her recent rescue, Abbie’s owners were concerned about the possibility of parvo. Thankfully, her parvo tests came back negative and her family decided to try outpatient care to see if she would rebound at home.

Unfortunately, a day later Abbie still wasn’t eating or acting like a playful puppy. For a tiny puppy to miss so many meals is extremely concerning, so at that time she represented for hospitalization and supportive care.

24 hours later Abbie is feeling much better. She’s started eating, seems much brighter, and is hopefully on the road to a full recovery.

We wish Abbie and her new family lots of love and luck. We can’t wait to see that little munchkin show off her spunky personality when she’s back to her usual self!
