MWHR has been in contact with local organizations and rescues regarding help for Hurricane Helene victims, especially farmers and their animals. We will be collecting donations for Hurricane Helene victims during our Fall Festival. You can make a monetary donation at the event or use the donation link at www.mwhr.org/donate
Please be sure to label your donation as "Hurricane Helene". Funds will be used to purchase specific items that are currently "highest need" like fencing supplies, hay and feed, propane heaters, etc. Our contacts are sending updated needs lists weekly to ensure that they are getting what is needed most to help.

Our Executive Director and her husband will be transporting donated supplies to NC and TN in the next few weeks and spending time there volunteering to help wherever it is needed.

Tropical Storm Helene Update from the MWHR Farm:
We are very happy to report that all the mustangs are safe! Everyone is wet but otherwise unphased. We are relieved that all our fence lines are in tact and no trees came down. The lake is overflowing tho!

Had to share because this resonates with me so much, especially as it relates to the mustangs and my rescue work. We cannot save or help them all, but the ones I do help will forever be changed for the better 💕

Please stop by the Mustang and Wild Horse Rescue of Georgia, Inc. - MWHR booth this Saturday, April 13th from 10AM to 1:30PM. We’ll have MWHR goodies available for purchase, and as always all the proceeds go directly towards caring for our mustangs!

Saddle up! Because Meet the Neighbors is just a few days away. And so is the chance to meet great folks, and equally great animals, associated with the names on this list.

They’re all part of an event intended to celebrate all things horses, as well as the rural heritage and equestrian community that helps make Milton unique. There will be lots to see, lots to learn, lots to shop from, lots to eat, and lots of fun to be had.

Organized by the City in conjunction with the Milton Equestrian Committee, Meet the Neighbors will run (trot? canter? gallop?) from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 13. The activity will be centered in the pastures of the City’s 21-acre greenspace at the corner of Freemanville and Birmingham roads. Hope to see you there!

We get a lot of questions this time of year about blanketing our mustangs. As a general rule, we do not blanket our horses because they all have their natural fluffy winter coats, shelter and lots of hay and warm water (thanks to trough heaters). This is some great information with explanations as to why our mustangs do not get “cold” or need to be blanketed 😊

FUN FACT FRIDAY! Are you familiar with the many adaptations that help your horse stay warm during the cold winter months?

🌾 Hindgut digestion of hay produces the most heat, acting as a small furnace inside of the horse. This is why free choice, good quality hay is so important in the winter.

💪 Horses have a huge muscle mass and muscle activity produces heat. This includes running and playing and even shivering if their body temperature starts to drop. It is important to remember that these activities also will result in a bigger caloric demand so free choice hay and in some cases, grain, is often needed.

🧥 To blanket or not to blanket is a constant debate but either way, as it starts to get cold your horse will grow a thicker coat. If you decide to leave your horse unblanketed you may notice that they look “fluffy”. This is due to a phenomenon called piloerection where the hair stands up to better trap air within. Two layers of the coat also help with warmth. The inner layer is softer and has air pockets to create an insulating layer. The outer layer is coarse and has oils that keep moisture from penetrating the insulating layer and keep the horse warm.

⚖️ Wild horses go into the winter heavier than ideal and the fat serves as an extra layer of insulation. However, if a horse is going to be kept heavily blanketed and in a barn during the cold weather months this is unnecessary and can lead to obesity related issues.

🦵Their distal limbs (below the knees and hocks) are made of mostly bones and tendons, tissues that are resistant to the cold temperatures.

🦶The hooves have an alternative route of blood circulation through larger vessels that can be used in low temperatures. This is why horses can stand in snow without detrimental effects.

👃A horse’s nose has a robust blood supply and is rounded so that it is less susceptible to frostbite than a human’s nose.

We had another wonderful mini clinic with Kathleen Beckham / Ethos Equine on December 3rd at the rescue farm. All the participant spots were full so it was a busy day for everyone! Several of our mini clinic participants got to enjoy learning groundwork and working with MWHR resident mustangs Bonanza, Mercy and Walker. We're so grateful for Kathleen's willingness to travel and share her knowledge with those who are eager to learn. As always, we look forward to hosting Kathleen again next year :)

**Please consider donating to the Mustang & Wild Horse Rescue of GA Inc (MWHR) for Giving Tuesday**

Giving Tuesday, falling on 11/28/23, encourages people worldwide to come together and give back to their communities. This day serves as a potent reminder of the power of generosity and the impact it can have on the lives of those in need. Your contribution will enable MWHR to continue rescuing and caring for mustangs and wild horses, ensuring they receive the love, attention, and support they deserve.

Here's how your donation can make a difference:

Nutrition and Shelter: By donating, you will assist MWHR in providing quality feed, hay, and supplements for the mustangs (and b***o) under our care. Your support will also help us maintain safe and comfortable shelter facilities to protect them from the elements.

Medical Care: Your donation will help cover the cost of veterinary care, including vaccinations, deworming, and preventative procedures. MWHR is committed to providing the best care available to our rescue mustangs.

Training and Rehabilitation: Your generosity will contribute to the transformation of these amazing horses, allowing us to provide professional training programs and rehabilitation. This ensures that they have the opportunity to be adopted into loving forever homes.

Educational Outreach: We believe in raising awareness about the plight of mustangs and wild horses to foster a sense of empathy and understanding in our community. Your donation will help facilitate educational programs to promote responsible horse ownership and wildlife conservation.

Your donation, no matter the amount, will have a significant impact on the lives of these majestic creatures. We rely on the generosity of compassionate individuals like you to continue our life-saving work. By supporting the Mustang and Wild Horse Rescue of GA Inc, you'll join us in making a lasting difference in the lives of these incredible animals.

To contribute, please visit our website at www.mwhr.org/donate or visit our fundraising link at https://www.gagives.org/story/S9fomf

We are a registered 501(c)(3) organization, and your donation will be tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. A receipt will be promptly provided for all contributions.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about our cause and for considering supporting our organization this Giving Tuesday. Together, we can make a tremendous difference in the lives of these innocent creatures, giving them a second chance at a life filled with love and compassion.

Yesterday evening we welcomed a new addition to the MWHR farm - Delilah. Delilah is a 9 year old mustang mare from Humboldt, NV who came to us because her family could no longer financially care for her. She did well with the transition to the farm and has already met some of our other resident mustangs. We’ll be spending time getting to know Delilah over the coming weeks and doing some groundwork to better assess her training level.

MWHR would like to give a special “thank you” to Alex Lokey / Keystone Landscape and Design for volunteering his time and equipment yesterday to help us pickup and transport a donated round pen back to the rescue farm. This young man is working hard to build his own business so if you’re in the north metro Atlanta area, please give him a call!

Thank you Alex La Pierre and Mark Jones for a fantastic clinic at MWHR today! Each of the participants got to use one of our resident mustangs to learn about the equine facial system and how they can do MFR on their own. MWHR mustangs Junior, Walker, Mercy and Bonanza did an excellent job and got to enjoy some hands on MFR work 😊🐴

We are very excited to announce the arrival of this sweet 6 year old BLM B***o from Seven Troughs, NV to the MWHR family. No official name yet, so feel free to make suggestions 😊
Special thanks to Alyssa at AR Horsemanship for giving this guy a great start with his TIP training. Once he’s all settled in, we’ll be working on introducing him into one of our mustang herds.
