📚 We want to wish everyone a happy first week back at school! 🚌

Turpin is ready to go to school to read with his friends! Turpin helps us support the community by volunteering as a best buddy for canine.classmates! He helps build confidence for many students who need encouragement with reading! They love to snuggle up with Turpin and read a good book!

The mission of Canine Classmates is to encourage and improve literacy and socialization skills for struggling and at-risk Pre-K through 5th grade students through pairing mentors and trained service dogs in a one-on-one program that is positive and nurturing!

August 2024: Meet Maru and Kobayashi who happen to be littermates! They visit the clinic once a month to get weighed and pick up their Simparica Trio (heartworm and flea preventative). When they first started coming by to see us they were very excited and a little nervous and would bark to let everyone know they were in the building! Dad brings them by so often that they know the routine very well! They look forward to getting on the scale and then waiting for dad to hook their leash to the counter where they wait patiently for dad to give them a treat! We love when they come to visit!

🥵 Please keep these heatstroke warning signs in mind as temps continue to be high these next few weeks! We often see pets that are experiencing heatstroke or are over heated and in need of emergency care. These situations can become serious. Please be mindful of senior pets who like to sunbathe or pets that have access to a doggie door. They often don’t realize it’s too hot or get disoriented and cannot find their way back inside. Please be sure your pets are preferably inside and/or have access to proper shade and water.

Please call us or the local emergency clinic if you suspect your pet may be over heated.

July 2024: -- In Loving Memory --
Sweet Lucy lived to be almost 15 years old! Lucy was a Dachshund and lived the best doxie life doing all the fun things with her people and her best buddy, Barney! She was well loved and cared for by her family. The team at CanyonVet Spring Branch will miss seeing her! She will certainly be missed by all! Fireworks are already starting to pop off in some places! Please read a few safety tips for your pets! This time of year often brings stress to our pets!

💥 don’t take your pet with you to the firework celebration.
💥 leave them at home in a quiet, safe place.
💥 make sure their collars + tags are on + microchip is registered.
💥 close the curtains to avoid flashes of light.
💥 use sound machines or soft music to drown out sound.
💥 for the extra stressed - use anxiety medications prescribed by your veterinarian.
💥 compression garments bring comfort to some pets.

Visit fearfreehappyhomes, com to learn of more ways to keep your pets stress free in their environments!

💥 $20 off Microchips the month of July! 💥

Does your pet have a microchip? According to statistics, one in three pets become lost at some point in their lives. Yikes! You never think about your pet being lost but sometimes it happens when we least expect it! With Fourth of July coming, we often hear stories of pets that become scared of the loud fireworks and run away. Microchipping your pet gives them the best chance of being identified and returned to you if they get lost or stolen. While collars and tags can get caught or removed, microchipping identifies your pet permanently and effectively.

Call us today to make an appointment to have the microchip administered. It's an easy process that is no more invasive than a vaccination, only takes minutes and your pet will get some extra treats too! If you are unsure if your pet already has a microchip, just bring them by for a quick scan, some love and a treat! We can make sure they are all set in the event they accidentally get lost!

[Offer valid only at CVSB for the month of July 2024. Please note that patient must have a current doctor/patient relationship to have a microchip administered.]

June 2024:
Meet Taz! Taz is a 3 year old English Bulldog! He comes to see us regularly to help maintain his skin allergies. He is always the happiest boy and we love to see him! Taz also has a condition that is common with his breed called Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome. BOAS is a condition affecting short nosed dogs and cats which can lead to severe respiratory distress. There are four different anatomical abnormalities that contribute to the disease, all of which occur more commonly in brachycephalic breeds: an elongated soft palate, stenotic nares, a hypoplastic trachea, and everted laryngeal saccules. Because all of these components make it more difficult to breathe in situations of exercise, stress, or heat, an animal with these abnormalities may be unable to take deep or fast enough breaths. This leads to distress and further increases respiratory rate and heart rate, creating a vicious cycle that can quickly lead to a life-threatening situation. Taz had a scary distress episode that led his mom on the path of having corrective surgery. Treatment consists of surgery for widening the nostrils, removing the excess tissue of an elongated soft palate, or removing everted laryngeal saccules. Taz had the procedure performed at Blue Pearl and we are happy to report he is on the mend and breathing better!

We are offering a special the month of June! It was a client favorite last year — so we wanted to do it for you again!

We are offering one complimentary heartworm test for your pet, with a purchase of 12 months of heartworm prevention during the month of June!

Heartworm disease is spread by a bite from an infected mosquito! Heartworm prevention is an important concern for every pet owner.

Heartworm preventives are safe, relatively inexpensive and easy to give, but if a dog becomes infected, heartworm treatment can be costly and difficult, requiring multiple veterinary visits and months of exercise restriction.

Heartworm preventives come in different forms, including monthly chewable pills and topical “spot on” medications, as well as an injectable medication (dogs only) that is given every 6 or 12 months. Heartworm preventives are available only by prescription from your veterinarian. Some preventives only prevent heartworms, some protect from heartworms and intestinal parasites, and some protect from many different parasites, including heartworms, intestinal worms, fleas, ticks and mites. We can guide you in the right direction on which prevention is best for your pet!

We know... that was a lot of great info! Please call us if you have any questions + we can help!

[Offer valid at CVSB for the month of June 2024. 12 months of heartworm prevention must be purchased in-house at CVSB, per patient. Offer not valid for online pharmacy purchase. Only one heartworm test offered per single patient that the 12 months heartworm prevention was prescribed and purchased for. Patient must be current on annual exam by CVSB.]

May 2024: Meet Zoey! Zoey is about 15 years old and is still very active! She has done laser therapy and Adequan injections to help her get around easier! Laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light (red and near-infrared) to create therapeutic effects. The laser is used for therapy of the soft tissues and bones of the body. We currently use the laser for many conditions including; arthritis, muscular injury, trauma, post operative care, wound healing, inflammation control, skin infections, and tissue and bone regeneration. Adequan is a intramuscular injection that helps with signs associated with degenerative and/or traumatic arthritis of the joints for canines. Zoey's mom reports that the injections and laser therapy have helped her a lot! Zoey is feeling like going on adventures again! YAY!

April 2024: Meet Belle, an 8 year old Great Pyrenees and Beau, a 10 year old Mixed Breed! They are both rescues from Georgia! They have been inseparable since they met 7 years ago! Belle spends her day chasing deer, squirrels, and anything that comes near her family. Beau would like to think he’s the brains of the operation but basically just lays around inside all day - hey, we do not judge that! : ) Most of all, they love exploring the beautiful Texas Hill Country with their people! Their family takes great care of them and makes sure they are protected from getting heartworms with the ProHeart injection! ProHeart is a 6 or 12 month injection that prevents heartworm disease and treats common hookworm infections. They also use Bravecto for fleas and ticks! Bravecto is a yummy pill that lasts 12 weeks! Ask if your pet is a candidate for these preventatives! April is National Heartworm Awareness Month! It is a good time to check your inventory and make sure you do not need to refill your pet's medications!

We see many rattlesnake bites - especially this time of year! Be sure to follow these tips to protect your pets!

🐍 Keep an eye on your pet when they are roaming the yard. Discourage your pet from sniffing in tall grass or under rocks as this is where snakes gravitate towards. 🐍 Keep your pet on a short leash on walks.
🐍 Consider the Rattlesnake Vaccine (ask Dr. Buntain or Dr. Lackie if your pet is a good candidate!)
🐍 Consider specialized rattlesnake aversion training if your pet is in snaky situations often.

Like people, dogs can stumble upon a snake by accident. Your dog’s curiosity or protective instinct can put them at further risk.

Vaccines work by stimulating an animal’s immunity to help defend against potentially harmful agents. The Rattlesnake Vaccine is intended to help create an immunity to protect your dog against the effects of western diamondback rattlesnake venom. Even after your dog is vaccinated against rattlesnake venom, he or she should be taken to a veterinarian for evaluation and care as soon as possible following the snakebite.

It's National Heartworm Awareness Month — a perfect time to discuss heartworm prevention with your veterinarian. It’s especially important to be proactive about protecting pets here in Texas, where the vehicle for heartworm disease—mosquitoes—runs rampant! Preventing heartworms is far easier, safer and more affordable than treating the disease!

Please read the article below to learn more about heartworms! Give us a call if you have any questions about which preventative your pet should be on!

March 2024: Meet Cappy! Cappy and his owner compete as a team in scent work through both AKC and as an amateur NACSW(National Association of Canine Scent Work). NACSW allows dogs to compete either as an amateur, for fun, or as a working dog, such as K9 unit, TSA or Search and Rescue dogs.

Dogs are trained to find essential oils and/or human odor. AKC searches can be interior, exterior, in containers or buried in sand or water. NACSW also does vehicle searches.

There are some great instructors in the area and this is a fun sport particularly for reactive dogs as there's very little interaction between other dogs and people during trials.
