A flirt pole can be such a great training tool! Here, Border Collie Apollo works on "enough"
Rizzo was having to be nudged the last bit into the crate at home. Now, he's not only going on on cue but nudging the door open himself. Way to go Rizzo! I'm going to miss this silly boy.
Working on retraining recall with Ryuu with a fresh phrase "to me"
Cornbread LOVES to work. Puppy camp Day two was a success๐พ
Rowan is a super sweet lab, husky, hound mix who struggles with a bit of stranger danger. Today we worked some confidence building and also the very beginning of place so that he has a job to do when people enter his house.
Scratch board arrived and we got to work immediately. Gordon knows "paw" as a cue so we started with that. Mabel, because she is my working dog, was never taught to paw so I had to figure out a behavior she already knows and then free shape it. I started with paws up on the board held high and let her start sliding and marked and named it scratch. After watching Mabel do this a couple times, apparently Gordon caught on and took it upon himself to scratch.

Even at an event like a Doodle Romp, you can still work recall and manners. Notice I only used Ollie's name to recall him and not his recall word. The reason why is because his chance of failure in this high distraction environment would be high enough that I don't want to poison his recall word. So just used his name and my excitement and reinforced with food. I was pretty impressed by him today!
Zita is now walking all the way around the block! ๐๐ป I let her get out in front of me here so I could get some video of her gait for her upcoming vet appointment. #ivddrecovery #boxersofinstagram #spinalstrokedogs
For anyone interested in Zita's progress. This girl's recovery and attitude amaze me every time I see her! I tried to take her out on the street today with her boot on but now that her left leg is staying under her she's pushing off of it really hard and there's a slight twist of her foot as she does so the boot kept twisting around and I didn't feel comfortable taking her on concrete with her exposed quick so we just did more laps around her house on the grass and lots and lots of snuggles. ๐
First walk without the sling... Just to the end of the street and back but she's getting stronger and her brain and body are reforming connections! ๐พโฃ๏ธ
Happy 1st day of Spring!
My pet sitting cutie says, "hey!"
Murphy is making some big strides. Curiosity is starting to take place of fear and he's learning new cues. I've also very slowly been working on desensitizing him to nail trims and today was able to touch all of the nails on his two front paws with the clippers and even take a tip off of his dew claw without him pulling away. Definite baby steps but we're headed in the right direction.
Morning walk with Miss Zita.
Recall: recall does NOT mean that your dog comes NEAR you when you call them. It means that your dog comes TO you and offers their ATTENTION.
Snoop was a rescue who's owner wanted him trained to be a service dog specifically given the task to wake her up and or prevent her from going outside in the middle of sleepwalking episode. She could undo locks, ignore alarms etc. so Snoop was really her last resort as far as ensuring her safety.
Unfortunately, Snoop struggled with focus and so we started at square one with the absolute basics. Finally, after a week of daily training I was able to get a solid, consistent recall and attention. Because so many people see breeds like GSDs and Malinois online being hyper handler focused and flashy, they assume that it makes all of them quick to train. Unfortunately, this leads to some being given up on when they can't match that perceived pace.
I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Marty today. Marty is a sweet smart boy with an abundance of energy. The entire family of 6 participated in our lesson (how great is that) and I'm excited to see the progress he makes through their "homework" at our next lesson ๐คฉ
