This week our team got some excellent training and onboarding with our new outside laboratory partner Ellie Diagnostics.
Ellie Diagnostics is a growing veterinary laboratory that is focused on supporting independently owned practices such as our own.
Now that we have partnered with Ellie we will speed up the turnaround time on biopsies/histopaths and receive more comprehensive bloodwork results. The best part is we do not have to compromise our prices! It was important for us to keep costs low but quality high for our clients and patients, and Ellie delivers just that.
We are very excited for all the good things to come from this new change! A big thank you to Courtney and her team that came in from Ellie Diagnostics to train our team!

We are cleared to open with normal hours today after the gas leak incident on Friday. We have close to 100 voicemails and text messages to sort through this morning and will have 3 receptionists to get through them as fast as we can and triaging them appropriately. Our plaza is currently evacuated by the CC Fire Department due to a propane gas leak. All patients are evacuated, accounted for, and being cared for by our staff who are also evacuated. We apologize for any inconvenience and as soon as we have more information from the authorities we will return all missed communications during the evacuation.

A busy road in Cape Coral is shut down as crews investigate a suspected gas leak. Police are asking drivers to avoid the area, if possible.

Dr. Husted graduated with her DVM from Oklahoma State University in 2005 and resides here in SWFL with her Husband and children. Here at Islandside Veterinary Care and Surgical Center we pride ourselves on providing fear-free care for our patients in many different forms. For instance, our lobby is strategically low-stress. This means we have scheduled appointments to minimize wait times, move pets into exam rooms quickly to prevent unwanted pet to pet interactions, and reduce noise levels. We have exciting news- Islandside Animal Hospital is expanding our commitment to the health of pets in our community with the launch of our affordable veterinary surgery center! In conjunction with the opening of our surgery center, we have changed our name to reflect our new focus- Islandside Veterinary Care and Surgery Center. To avoid any speculation, our ownership team has not changed and we remain committed to being an independently owned veterinary practice.

Beginning January 15th 2024, our Surgery Center, led by Dr. Nicole Nichols, will offer affordable veterinary surgery including but not limited to spays/neuters, bladder surgeries, gastrointestinal surgeries, eye surgeries, mass removals and many others.

Please keep your pet's health in mind during this excessive heat we are currently having. We have already seen a few overheated patients and some burnt paw pads.
Also, please avoid taking your pets on any car ride where you may need to leave them in the car for even a short amount of time.
Let's keep our best friends safe this Summer while we all survive this heat 🥵.

We are sad to announce that Dr. Amanda German's last day with Islandside Animal Hospital will be on Saturday July 29th. Dr. German has been an asset with us here at Islandside since 2019 and will be relocating to the Orlando area with her family. We know her clients and patients will miss her tremendously and she leaves big shoes to fill. We sincerely wish her and her family the best in their move and future endeavors and thank her for her time with us here at Islandside.

We are currently looking to bring on another veterinarian, but until we find our perfect fit we still have Dr. Nichols, Dr. Braun, and Dr. Apking here to see all our wonderful patients. Unfortunately, we will be unable to see any species aside from dogs and cats after July 29th. For our already established exotic patients we recommend Viscaya Prado Veterinary Hospital here in Cape Coral or Medlin Exotic Animal Services in Fort Myers for future exotic medical services.

Wow, what a whirlwind of 36 hours.

Starting at 9:45am yesterday (Monday) morning our plaza has a drainage issue that caused a partial roof collapse. This allowed yesterday's storm to come rushing in very, very quickly on our staff while they were actively working (and even had a patient under anesthesia). Thankfully, we have the most amazing staff in the world and they jumped into action to literally try to save our sinking ship. I will post some videos so our clients can see the extent of what we were met with suddenly and why we were unable to call anyone back immediately.
I do want to clarify that any news articles stating we walked into a burst pipe are completely untrue. The hospital was in regular condition when we walked in at 8am on Monday. All tenants were effected and the city fire department had to evacuate the entire building on Monday because there was a smell of smoke and electrical was cut to everyone. All businesses in our plaza were unable to operate today (Tuesday) until the plaza passed the city electrical inspection to safely operate.

Our plaza has officially passed the city electrical inspection this afternoon.
That being said, we will be open tomorrow, Wednesday 4/19/23 with regular business hours. We have had to cancel some surgeries and will continue to push back anesthetic procedures as needed until we can safely perform those procedures in our space. Also our X-ray unit is currently non-operational and we will need to go through the process of warranty, insurance, and re-install if a new unit is truly needed. Unfortunately all x-rays will need to be referred out at this time and we apologize for the inconvenience.

We are unsure if one or two of our a/c units are shot, but we do have one completely functional, so we apologize if a little warm tomorrow. It also may be louder than usual with fans and dehumidifiers running to dry everything out.
If anyone has any extra towels they were looking to get rid of or donate out we would happily take them off your hands to use for our patients as we exhausted our entire supply trying to fight the storm water back on Monday.
Our receptionists are working on calling back anyone who we had to cancel on in order to get those pets rescheduled. If we missed your voicemail which can happen when we have 100s to catch up with please give us a call starting Wednesday so we can better assist you.

Thank you for all our clients who understood the last 36 hours were completely beyond any of our control.

We will be closed today as we still are without electricity. We hope to be open Wednesday but will know more later today once the city completes their electrical inspection. Thank you for your understanding.

We unfortunately have to close today, our plazas roof caved in and has flooded and our whole plaza is being evacuated by the fire department. All boarding pets (one single kitty thankfully) are accounted for, completely safe, and being taken care of by employees and evacuated.
We apologize for any inconvenience as we have tried to quickly call all appointments to make them aware of the situation.

Today our staff had to say goodbye to our hospital cat Lily. Lily came to us in 2018 after she was newly diagnosed with diabetes and her very elderly owner could no longer care for her and her medical needs. We asked her former owner to sign her over to us and we would find her a new home.
Needless to say, Lily quickly made her home with us at Islandside and we couldn't bear to part with her so we never adopted her out.
She hated every dog that walked through the doors to the back and would make sure they all knew she was in charge (even though she came to us declawed, she was willing to take that risk for a few good swipes).
Her greatest nemesis was the time change because she knew her food would hit her dish at 5pm every day. And Lord help the staff member who was 2 minutes late getting it to her.

We will miss her fiesty spirit immensely. Please give our staff a little grace if they appeared overly teary-eyed first thing this morning. She was a very loved cat ❤

**OPEN TOMORROW TUESDAY OCT 4TH**

We will be open tomorrow, Tuesday Oct 4th. We will be prioritizing sick and injured patients. Anyone who was already scheduled for Tuesday prior to the Hurricane is still on the schedule, we currently do not have internet or access to our digital files so the services we can provide may be limited until internet is restored.
Our phone service will also be limited as we will be working on limited mobile hotspots for now and we expect the lines to stay busy all day. If able please text questions or requests to 239-214-2165 or email us at [email protected]

All Chewy and Vets First Choice prescriptions have been approved as of today. Any other 3rd party outside pharmacy fax requests are still pending as we have not had access to them until (hopefully) tomorrow.

We will also be calling to reschedule anyone who had an appointment during our closures to get them back on the schedule in the coming days.

We do ask patience with our staff tomorrow as there is the possibility of extended wait times, shortage of products, and plenty of other things out of our control. That being said, we have missed all of you and your pets these past few days and very happy we can finally start the reopening process.
