Harper, the fabulous 8-year-old Cavalier King Charles, stopped by for her annual wellness appointment-and to show off her stylish new haircut! πŸ’‡β€β™€οΈπŸΆ She looked as fabulous as ever, but more importantly she got a full health check-up to make sure she's feeling as great as she looks.

At 8 years old, Harper is considered a senior, which makes these wellness exams even more important. Regular check-ups help us catch any potential health issues early so we can keep our senior friends happy and healthy for years to come. During her exam, Harper checked out completely healthy (yay!), though we did notice a bit of tartar buildup on her teeth. 🦷 Nothing too serious, but her mom has already scheduled a dental cleaning for October to keep her smile in tip-top shape. We'll see Harper again then!

🐢Senior pet Care Reminder🐢

As our pets get older, it's crucial to stay on top of regular exams, dental care, and any changes in behavior or mobility. A proactive approach can make a world of difference in their quality of life!

Tansy's Tough Day! πŸ’™πŸΎ The beautiful 5-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog friend, came in for a visit after a scary accident-she was bumped by a car. πŸ’₯πŸš— At first, she seemed okay, as the car wasn't going fast even though the incident was super scary. But after a little while, her parens noticed she was very sore, had trouble getting up, and just wasn't her usual happy self. She didn't even want to eat, which is when her family became concerned and brought her in to see us.

After a thorough exam, we found that Tansy had some soft tissue trauma from the accident leaving her in a lot of pain and discomfort. πŸ˜”πŸ’” Thankfully, nothing was broken so we gave her pain relief with Carprofen and Gabapentin to help ease her soreness. Since she wasn't too interested in her regular kibble, we offered her some canned food- and she ate it right up! πŸ₯«πŸ• Sometimes, a little change in flavor can make all the difference when our pups are feeling down.

We're so relieved that nothing more serious happened, and we're hopeful that with rest, medication, and lots of love from her family, Tansy will be back to her happy, playful self in no time.

πŸš—Pet Safety ReminderπŸš—

Even when a vehicle isn't going very fast, getting hit can cause significant trauma to dogs, from soft tissue injuries to more severe internal damage. It's always important to monitor for changes in behavior and bring them in for an exam if they seem off. The sooner we catch potential issues, the better we can help our furry friends recover.

Bella the Adorable Shih Tzu mix! 🐾πŸ₯•πŸ’• Say hello to Bella, who's officially 16 weeks old and quite possibly one of the cutest pups we've ever seen! 😍 This little bundle of love is full of energy and happiness, and her love language is...toys! Whether it's cookies or her favorite toy, Bells is always ready for playtime, as you can see in the picture of her joyfully enjoying every minute!πŸ₯•

This week, Bella was old enough to receive her final round of vaccinations! πŸŽ‰. We'll see her again at 6 months for her spay surgery and to get her microchipped.

🐢Spaying is Important🐢

Spaying is not only important for preventing unwanted litters, but it also helps reduce the risk of certain health issues, including uterine infections and some types of cancer. It can even help with behavioral concerns. By spaying Bella, we're making sure she stays healthy and happy for many more years of playtime ahead! πŸŒŸπŸ’–

The sweetest Bernadoodle friend came to see us again for a recheck on her ear infection form a few weeks ago. While her ear is completely healed, she's still dealing with some generalized anxiety and overall itchy nervous discomfort ( also known as Pruritus). Mom said she is really worked up and just doesn't seem as relaxed as she could be and deals with separation anxiety as well. πŸ˜•πŸΆ

After a lengthy discussion about the goals we have for her, we decided to try a medication that will hopefully help ease her anxious feelings and soothe her skin irritation. We're excited to see if this helps her feel more calm and comfortable-and gives her a new, relaxed outlook on life! 🌸✨

Anxiety can affect dogs in all kinds of ways-some might become restless, while others can get itchy or even develop physical symptoms like skin issues. It's important to address both the mental and physical aspects of anxiety in our furry friends. With a little bit of medication and training, we're hopeful that she may not need to stay on the meds forever, though it's possible she'll need ongoing support. Either way, we're dedicated to helping her feel her best!

A close call for this Curious pup! 🐢 We had quite the little visitor at the clinic recently-a pup who decided to help himself to some THC-CBD lotion! πŸ§΄πŸƒ

Unfortunately, it wasn't just any lotion, but a high potency one that caused a pretty severe reaction. This poor guy was unable to walk, had ataxia (loss of coordination), and even experienced some urinary incontinence. 😞

He spent some time us and at Valley Emergency Pet Care, where we all kept a close eye on him and supported him as his body worked hard to clear out the THC. After some rest and care, we're happy to report that he's back on his paws and feeling much better! πŸΎπŸ’š

🚨A Friendly Reminder 🚨

While this story has a happy ending, ma*****na ingestion can be very dangerous for dogs! Even small amounts can cause serious issues like disorientation, tremors, and in severe cases, can even lead to comas. πŸ•πŸš« So, if you ever suspect your dog has ingested ma*****na in any form, it's important to seek veterinary care right away. Let's keep those curious noses out of trouble!πŸ˜‰

This week, we take a moment to recognize and celebrate one our clinic's unsung heroes-our amazing accountant, Diana!πŸŒŸπŸŽ‰πŸ“Š

Diana plays an essential role in keeping our financial systems running smoothly, making sure the cogs behind the scenes are always turning. She ensures that every financial detail is in place so we can focus on providing the best care for our patients.πŸ₯

Her dedication, hard work, and attention to detail do not go unnoticed, even though much of what she does happens quietly behind the scenes. We are incredibly fortunate to have someone as talented and reliable as Diana on our team. πŸ‘πŸ’–

So, during Accounting Appreciation Week, we want to say a huge Thank you, Diana, for everything you do! πŸ™Œ We appreciate you today and every day!

We had the joy of meeting Bentley, the two year old Old English Sheep dog who is, without a doubt, the biggest goofball we've ever met! 🐢 This big, lovable fluffball came in for a second opinion after his mom found a couple of lumps on his back.

With Bentley's thick, massive coat, it was a bit of a challenge to find those lumps, but we managed to get some samples for testing. While they look like benign cysts (phew!), we'll be keeping an eye on them just to be safe. If Bentley ever needs to come in for a procedure that requires anesthesia, we can easily remove them at the same time.

Bentley was such a fun patient-rolling around on the floor, jumping around and just being his adorable, goofy self. We're so glad we got to meet him, and we're already looking forward to his next visit!

We had the pleasure of meeting Milo, a super brave cat who came to visit us for the first time. Over the weekend, his parents noticed a small, golf ball sized lump on his shoulder that kept getting bigger. By the time he came in, it had ruptured and wasn't smelling too pleasant. 😿

But Milo was a champ! He made sure to tell us all about what was going on and then showed us just how brave he could be. Without needing any sedation, Milo let us clip and clean the area around the abscess, and we gave it a good flush with some dilute betadine. We also gave him a long-lasting antibiotic injection, so his parents won't have to worry about pilling him (because we all know how that goes with cats!)

We're confident Milo will be back on the prowl in no time, all healed up and ready for his next adventure. Hang in there, Milo-we're rooting for you!

Georgie came in for his vaccinations and full check-up, and we're happy to report he's healthy as a horse! Plus, this little guy is super food-motivated, so we had no trouble getting his vaccines done with the help of a custom cheese board. πŸ§€ Just look at those floppy ears-they got a little cheesy too!

We can't wait to see Georgie agin in four weeks as he continues to grow and we keep him on track with his immunizations. We're excited to watch the little pup thrive!

We had the pleasure of seeing Buddy, the happiest, most go-lucky Cavalier King Charles at the hospital. This little guy came in to get his bandage removed after he had a procedure done in Denver to have a mass removed from between his toes. As always, he greeted us with a wagging tail and lots of love. 😍

When Dr. Davis removed Buddy's bandage, she notice some incision dehiscence (that's a fancy word for a little opening in the incision), which can happen in high-impact areas like his paw. But don't worry- Buddy's in great hands! We removed the sutures and sent him home with a medication to help the healing along. This time, we're letting his foot breathe without a bandage, so it can dry out and heal properly. 🩹

We'll see Buddy again in a few weeks to check on his progress, but with his positive attitude, we're confident he'll be bouncing around like his usual self in no time. 🐢

🐾Reba, one of our beloved Basset hounds, paid us a visit recently, not just for her usual Adequan injections and spa day, but because she was scratching at her ear.
Her ear was inflamed with black debris and was very uncomfortable. After collecting a sample and examining it under the microscope, we found that she had developed a yeast and bacteria infection causing her discomfort.

We treated her with a long-acting ear medication, so her mom won't have to worry about daily ear treatments which can be difficult when her ears are uncomfortable. We will recheck Reba's ears in two weeks to ensure the infection is gone. We hope that she is on the road to recovery and we will only need to see her for her routine technician visits.

We hit pause on our busy schedules to celebrate the amazing Dr. Stephanie Robinson and the upcoming arrival of her little bundle of joy! πŸ‘ΆπŸ’–
Our hospital family came together to throw the most heartwarming baby shower, filled with laughter and love.

Dr. Gisleson was a wonderful host and made the most delicious food and the presentation was laid out pretty in pink. Dr. Robinson received some very heartfelt gifts that brought joyous smiles to us all. We are so excited for you, Stephanie, and can't wait to meet the newest member of the team! :) πŸŽ€πŸΌ

Here's to Dr. Robinson-may your journey into motherhood be as incredible as you are! 🌟

Welcome Bugsy, a 14 week old bundle of energy and love! This adorable Labrador-German shorthaired pointer mix recently moved from South Dakota to his new home here, and we're thrilled to be part of his journey. Bugsy came in for his second round of vaccinations, and we made sure he's getting all set for a his first year of adventure. He was highly toy motivated and the ball he was playing with kept rolling under the couch so we found him several times crawling under to retrieve it. πŸ₯Ž

We boosted his Distemper vaccine, started the Leptospirosis series (since we are pretty sure he's going to be a water-loving pup🌊) and gave him his Bordetella to protect him from kennel cough as he starts socializing with other dogs.

Bugsy's new family also decided to enroll him in our puppy package-an all-inclusive plan that covers everything a growing pup needs in their first year. From vaccinations, heartworm protection, spaying or neutering, microchipping and more, it's the perfect way to ensure Bugsy gets the best start in life without breaking the bank all at once. Plus, the monthly payment option makes it easy and affordable.

Today, we also gave Bugsy his microchip, so he's now officially part of the "found if lost" club! 🐢He'll be back in 3-4 weeks for his final round of vaccinations.

If you've got a new puppy or are thinking about getting one, give us a call to learn more about or puppy package! It's designed to give your furry friend the personalized care they need to thrive.

Meet Ivy, the sweetest senior girlfriend who came to visit us today all the way from Texas! 🐾. Ivy's been enjoying her vacation here for the past few weeks, but her dad noticed she was having some trouble with her front leg. The lameness just kept progressing and he was worried about her so he brought her in for an exam and some advice to keep her comfortable as she continues to age.

Dr. Gisleson took a close look and discovered that on the leg that Ivy's has been limping on, the elbow was quite thickened, likely due to arthritis and age. We suspect the stairs at their vacation rental might have aggravated her condition since she isn't used to climbing them.

To help Ivy feel better, we started her on Carprofen and recommended adding Adequan injections and Dasaquin supplements to her routine. We'll check back in a couple of weeks to see how she's doing before they head back to Texas, and if she is improving then we will start her on Librela injections to continue with her arthritis care.

We're wishing Ivy lots of love and comfort as she enjoys the rest of her vacation!

We had the pleasure of seeing Osira, the beautiful German Shepherd who did not have the same sentiment about being in the clinic. 😝Her family was starting to worry about a crusty callus that had formed on the tip of her nose and seemed to be getting worse. Naturally, they wanted to have it checked out to ensure everything was okay.

Dr. Gisleson examined Osira and suspected it might be hyperkeratosis-a common condition that causes dry, crusty skin, especially on areas like the nose and foot pads. Given the dry climate and the intense sun at this elevation, it's not uncommon for dogs to develop this issue. Thankfully, it's easily treatable!

We made a few recommendations of ointments to apply with a sunscreen, along with some tips to try to not get her to lick them off the minute they are applied to hopefully help from further damage. We also suggested adding fish oil to her diet, which can work wonders for her skin and coat health. 🐟

We'll give it a few weeks to see how Osira responds to this conservative treatment. If the condition doesn't improve after 30 days, we'll have her back in for a biopsy to rule out other possible causes. For now, we're optimistic that our recommendations will do the trick and have Osira feeling her best in no time. 🐢❀️

Say hello to Riley, the 6 month old bundle of joy who recently found his furever home after a brief stay at the Telluride Animal Shelter! 🐾. Riley's new mom was on the lookout for the perfect addition to their family and after spotting this sweet and confident pup, it was love at first sight. They knew right away that Riley was the one, and he's been a fantastic pup ever since!πŸΆπŸ’™

When Riley came in for a check-up, his new parents asked us to take a look at a random "cut" near his groin area. Turns out, it wasn't just any cut- it was the incision from his cryptorchid surgery. For those who don't know, cryptorchidism is when one or both of a male dog's testicles fail to descend into the sc***um. This condition is common, and surgery is often needed to remove the undescended testicle(s) to prevent future health issues.

Riley is a happy, healthy pup and he's only got one more round of vaccines before he's all set to go! We're thrilled to see him thriving in his new home, and we can't wait to watch him grow into the wonderful dog we know he'll be! πŸ•πŸŽ‰

Who is this big, handsome ball of love? Meet Robert, the goofy yellow lab who came in this week to recheck his eye. πŸ‘πŸ’›. Last week, Robert had a little accident when he went swimming in a pond-though he's not telling us how he ended with a big piece of wood stuck in his eye. 😳

We had to sedate him to safely remove the chunk of wood from his eyeball, and assess the eye. Despite the size of the the piece of wood that was removed, there was no evidence of a globe puncture but he did have a Corneal ulcer that appeared to superficially scratch most of the surface of his eye. He was sent home with pain medication to help with the the discomfort along with a few eye ointments to help the eye heal.

Despite the significant corneal scratch on his eye, due to the dedication from his family applying his ointments several times a day, Robert's eye is healing beautifully. The corneal ulcer had not fully resolved on his first recheck visit but we will have him come back in another week so we can track his progress.

Although the story remains a mystery and Robert isn't giving us any details on how it happened, we've advised him that this would not be recommended as a future play activity! Robert is the cutest and we're so happy to see him on the mend. We're looking forward to more visits with the sweet, goofy boy - just under less stressful circumstances!

Sage, the GoldenDoodle, stopped by for his routine wellness exam and vaccinations, and during his visit, his mom asked us to check out a little lump she had notice on him that he was licking at. To our surprise, (and his) it turned out to be a bot fly larva infestation. πŸͺ°

Bot fly infestation in dogs occur when dogs come into contact with areas where bot flies lay their eggs, often near rabbit burrows. The larvae can burrow into the dog's skin, creating a lump that may go unnoticed until it becomes bothersome. These larvae are football shaped and their removal typically requires sedation and a small incision to ensure the entire larva is safely extracted.

However, Sage was such a trooper! He laid on his side so patiently that we were able to remove the larva from him without needing to sedate him. Thankfully, the larva was small enough for a simple extraction this time. Gross? Yes! But it's important to keep an eye out for any unusual lumps on your dog, especially during this season when bot flies are more active. If you notice anything concerning, please don't hesitate to give us a call. 🩺🐾

We were so happy to have Sage come see us, and we hope his fall is a little less eventful-but still full of fun!πŸ‚

Meet Nellie, a sweet 5 year old who recently came to see us because she'd been shaking her head quite a bit. Unfortunately, Nellie struggles with environmental allergies, which can be a real nuisance for our furry friends. πŸŽ‹πŸΎ

Environmental allergies in dogs can be triggered by pollen, mold, dust mites, and other airborne substances. These allergens can cause symptoms like itchy skin, red and inflamed ears, and excessive scratching or licking. Dogs with environmental allergies often experience flare ups during certain seasons when allergens are more prevalent.

When we examined Nellie's ears, we found a mix of yeast and bacteria having a little party in her ears, as you can see on the slide. Her ears were so inflamed and painful that we were unable to apply any long-lasting ear medications right away. Instead, we sent home a medication to calm the inflammation down and gave her a Cytopoint injection to help neutralize her allergic response. Nellie's mom will bring her back in a few days after she's had some time for the medication to work, and then we can complete her ear treatment to clear up the yeast and bacteria. 🩺🐢

Nellie was such a good girl and did everything we asked of her-especially with the help of some cookies. πŸͺ We will see Nellie back in a few days to continue her treatment and get her on the road to recovery!

08/27/2024

Meet Gary, the almost 9 year old Weimaraner, who came in to see us after not feeling well following a stay at his favorite kennel. He wasn't eating, was pretty lethargic, and just wasn't himself-no wagging his tail or excited greetings like usual. 😞

When Gary arrived at the clinic, he was running a fever and feeling pretty low. We ran some blood work, placed an IV catheter, and gave him fluids to help bring down his fever and keep him hydrated since he hadn't been
eating or drinking much. πŸ’‰πŸ’§

Gary ended up spending several days with us, going home at night and returning the next day for continued fluids as he just could not break his fever. He needed the extra support until his body started to heal. On the third day, we recommended that he get an ultrasound with Dr. Radway to check all his internal organs, ensuring there wasn't anything we didn't see on the x-rays we had taken on previous days. Thankfully, everything looked normal. 🩺🩻 By the fourth day, after receiving medications and fluids through his IV and some extra TLC from his loving family at night, Gary did not have to return to the hospital and he was able to continue his medications orally at home.

We're hopeful that he'll keep feeling better and better and back to his "Weimie" self in no time!πŸΎπŸ’™

Saturdays are made for adventures, and there's no better place to be than out in the mountains with your best friends by your side. There's something truly special about the bond between dogs and their humans.

Dogs have a way of turning even the simplest days into extraordinary adventures. They remind us to find joy in the little things, from a sunbeam on a trail to the thrill of a squirrel sighting.

"Until one has loved and animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened"
-Anatole France

So here's to Saturdays in the mountains, where laughter echoes through the trees and your heart is full of love, thanks to your loyal companions.

Meet Bella, the adorable 12 week old Shih Poo who has completely stolen our hearts! 🐢❀️ Bella is full of love, kisses, and playful energy-she's always rolling around and looking for fun! With her cute little underbite and inquisitive nature, she kept us all smiling from ear to ear. 😍

Bella recently came in for her next round of vaccinations and being highly food-motivated made it a breeze! πŸ–. Her parents had chosen a grain-free option for her food, and while we recommended finishing the bag they had, we did suggest transitioning to a grain-inclusive diet. Though we can only make recommendations, we believe there's some correlation between grain-free dog foods and a specific heart disease called dilated cardiomyopathy. While the risk might be small, it's a risk and it's still something we like to educate our clients about, so they can make the best decisions for their pets.

We can't wait to see Bella again in three to four weeks for her final puppy vaccines. We're already counting down the days until we get to cuddle with this little cutie again! 🐾
