We hope this finds all of you safe and sound this morning. A common question I want to address: Should you crate train your dog?

Unless you were utterly knocked out cold last night, you probably have heard there were storms in the area. Our neighbor opened up their home for shelter and four families hunkered down. Most of us had dogs to add to the mix. If not for crate training this situation would not have worked. One dog is not dog friendly. Another gets stressed easily around lots of people. We also had 5-6 cats (I lost count) in the mix. Everyone is safe and happy this morning—from the storm and each other! We are so grateful to our awesome neighbors for giving us a spot to ride out the storms and to everyone who joined us for taking the time to crate train!

Tommy is 10/10 on the cuteness scale but some of his puppy antics like playing rough with his teeth and jumping for what he wants was really taking a toll on his owners. We worked through a basic obedience skill program to help lay a foundation for communication with Tommy then followed up later with some Ecollar training to gain more consistency in his responses. We are happy to have helped Tommy and his family navigate through the variety of puppy stages and set them up for a long happy life together!

Isla gives everything 100% in life. We love that about her but wanted Isla to learn it’s ok and preferable to give 75%, 50%, and even 25% at times! Knowing how to live in moderation has helped Isla’s ability to focus and as a result listen and retain what her owners tell her. She’s still a bundle of puppy energy but with more self control and awareness!

Timber is spunky and very loving. She loves the good life with plenty of space to run at home, visits to daycare, and a house full of people and dogs to love on at home. Unfortunately Timber just hadn’t built an ability to settle on her own. She always had to be doing something and would find things that weren’t always desirable to keep herself busy. In her time staying with us we made settling a priority. We still had plenty of time to run and play but we were intentional about taking time during the day to relax in a down or hangout in place. As Timber found her stop button she also gained the ability to express her love with moderation instead of full force. A huge development as this allows her to cuddle on the couch with the littlest human rather than smother him!

Carmi and his owner had a lot of obstacles to overcome. At 2 years old Carmi had spent an unknown period of time running as a stray then was bounced back and forth between adopters and the shelter life before landing in his current home. He has a high prey drive for small furry animals and any type of fast movement. Before starting training Carmi had taken his owner down to the ground on walks when one of these things caught his attention and had also become so overstimulated by traffic he turned around and started fighting his owner to be let loose. Carmi’s owner was also facing the challenge of being a first time dog owner and learning how to navigate this new role. Things had progressed to a point where the humans in the house were drastically altering their routines to accommodate life with Carmi.
In our lessons we focused on building accountability for choices and an ability to regulate through excitement with the use of obedience skills. It is still an active choice for Carmi to ignore the cars passing in the video but with continued work it should soon become second nature. Life for Carmi and his people is becoming much more relaxed and enjoyable.

Dalton & Maizie started lessons after multiple fights erupted between the two. Dalton is usually a laid-back dog, but gets anxious when things are out of routine for him. Maizie tends to be high strung and as she matured became more demanding to get what she wanted. These differences slowly built up tension between the two dogs, and once one fight happened it became easy for other fights to break out over seemingly small things. Having both dogs enrolled in lessons allowed boundaries and skills to be instilled, as well as working through their issues in a neutral environment. With a lot of hard work by the dogs and the humans in the house we were able to gain a level of respect between the dogs that allowed for safe and calm interaction. In the photo we are using muzzles to help keep everyone safe as we tested to see if the dogs could be together again in a casual setting without fighting. With continued work and taking small steps over extended time we have a solid plan to continue repairing their relationship.

This dynamic duo of old curmudgeon stubbornness and young dog energy had their owner asking for some help! At 11-years-old, Buddy had been with his owner for over half of his life and had gotten used to a certain way of things. Then this high-strung bundle of energy, Enzo, came home and it brought out some new difficulties in Buddy. Despite the fact that he could have doubled as the Energizer Bunny, Enzo was very eager to please and learned quickly throughout the lesson. We worked very slowly with Buddy, the goal being to accomplish only a few main skills that his owner wanted from him: To respond better to guests coming over and to have outdoor recall so that he would stop running away or barking at the mailman. Buddy accomplished these goals, but also went even further and tackled many of the others skills that Enzo was working on. A+ work to these two good boys!

Otis viewed himself as the head honcho at home and had a lot to say about people coming to his front door or dogs passing by his window. His owner's main goals were for him to have better behavior around people coming into the house and to be able to place or hold a stay when answering the door. At 6 years old, Otis had some ingrained stubbornness and was very willing to push against his new boundaries; but by the end of his program he was already doing well with place, showing improved manners involving either himself or someone else entering or exiting the door, and just having all-around better on-leash skills.

Darling Luna came to stay for her training to help with her Aussie-typical behaviors—excited jumping, firing up/trash talking through the fence at other dogs, impulsive decisions on leash (squirrel!), and herding her other canine housemates. Luna had a foundation built with her owner and came in with a love of learning. Luna quickly blazed through her skill learning and made many friends when working out in public places. We greatly enjoyed helping this bright pup have a solid start with her family and look forward to hearing how she excels in the future!

Nora started training to help create clearer communication between her and her household. Nora was not afraid to make her feelings known even if it required she used her teeth. Our lessons included teaching Nora’s people more about signals for when Nora was uncomfortable and needed space and building skills with Nora to help create healthy boundaries and reasonable expectations around human space. Balancing these two areas can be difficult at first and may include some trial and error. With time and diligence we can find what works for each situation!

Butters started his training to form a good foundation in his skills and help curb common puppy pit-falls like pulling on pant legs, grabbing pony tails when on the couch, and accosting the family cats. With persistence and patience Butters completed his program more respectful of everyone’s boundaries. We are happy to say all kitties and pony tails in Butter’s reach are safe from surprise attacks.

Honey is a fitting name for this very sweet girl. Her owner - a client who brought one of her other pups to us a few years ago - just wanted Honey to have manners that matched that name. At 1-year-old, Honey had all of the energy and exuberance, but that made it difficult for her to listen consistently to commands. She was also a jumper and a puller, especially if she saw anyone who looked like they may want to give her some belly rubs. By the end of her lessons, Honey still had all of her excitement, joy, and lovability, but she had learned that she still needed to listen regardless of the situation, not to jump, and not to drag her owners around at the other end of the leash. Honey got to spend her final lesson working in a different environment around lots of distractions and she did excellently! She even got a few belly rubs from some passersby - which makes it a 10/10 day for Honey. 😉

Sweet Sadie is a smart girl who loves people, but there were multiple things that would just send her into a full-blown tizzy: Other dogs, big trucks, loud sounds, etc. Her owners dreaded taking her somewhere in the car, because that just seemed to heighten the agitation. During her lessons, we re-established some of the basic commands she already knew, taught a few new ones, and formed and consistently reinforced boundaries; all of these layers helped Sadie to understand that her owners were in control and that she didn't have to spiral into anxiety whenever any of those previous triggers popped up. By the end of her program, aside from a little bit of whining if she saw something exciting or a little bit scary, Sadie was almost a completely different dog on car rides. For her final lesson, we got to work her around people, other dogs that were also in the store, big sounds and she did awesome! We're so proud of you, Sadie!

Renada "Renny" started lessons at a little under 6 months old, but her owners had already been putting in work teaching her basic commands, working on recall, and improving leash manners. Their biggest areas they wanted help working on were her pushiness and exuberance, both which lead to mouthing, jumping, and similar behaviors. At the completion of Renny's program, she was showing a lot of reliability with off-leash recall (in appropriate settings), improved impulse control by staying on her bed even when there were big distractions, and more ability to calm herself down when the biggest excitement of all happened: Her people coming home.

This beautiful girl came with all of the puppy characteristics: Hyper, shark teeth, going potty in the house, pulling on her leash, obsessed with the cats, etc. As Armani was getting closer to 6 months, she was also starting to test out some boundaries by being sassy about food and encountering strangers on walks. With the hard work of her owner, Armani progressed speedily through her program, covering all of the basic skills, plus learning to "leave it." Especially owning to her breed combinations, recall around the cats outside was one of the toughest things for her, but she was learning to respond more promptly and making great progress in all of her skills and manners.

Charlie came to her family as a puppy and had now been with them for 10 years. She had gotten used to her routines and norms; she had no interest in being friends with new dogs and while she wouldn't pick a fight, she would vocally give them the what-for. In addition, loud noises or people approaching the house (especially the dreaded mailman) where big sources of anxiety for her. Then this new, wiggly puppy came home and changed things up a bit. Though there were some obvious adjustments and conflicts over boundaries that came with it, Charlie and Ellie mostly got along. The biggest challenge came with Ellie playing with or around Charlie; either she would get too loud, too exuberant, or in her excitement accidentally bump into the older dog, but Charlie did NOT like that and she and Ellie had the tendency to get into some nasty fights over it. This duo worked through their lessons, learning new boundaries - with their owners and each other - and were finding a new harmony at home. While it was also necessary for their owners to manage and maintain a wide berth between dogs during playtime, they saw how the lessons were even changing their arguments: Instead of it turning into King Kong vs. Godzilla and requiring intervention during an accidental spat that occurred at home, before the owners could even respond they heard the dogs give some vocal argument to each other and then move on and away. Good job, Ellie and Charlie - it can be hard to share your space, but you're both learning well!

Bubba and his person had the goal of mastering their basic obedience to assess whether Bubba could handle the process of becoming a service dog. Bubba flew through the basic training skills so quickly we got to add extra tasks to our curriculum. You can see in the photo Bubba practicing touch targeting with his paw which will eventually be linked to create an anxiety alert for his human. Bubba has started his service dog training with downtheleashservicedogs and we hear he is doing an excellent job!
**Reminder** We do not train service dogs at this time. Dogs like Bubba will continue their training and be certified through a separate organization that evaluates the dog based on their own criteria.
