In honor of National Adopt a Cat Month, Marcia wanted to share an update on Dorian! The first photo shows him on Day 1, right after he arrived with 11 other cats from a single rescue location. He was full of worms and likely in**ed. Among the rescued cats, he stood out as the only white one, and I fell in love with him instantly. I pleaded with Norma to let me take him home, but she insisted on waiting until he received medical care. A few days later, he was all mine, and he quickly transformed into the handsome cat in the second photo—our BIG BLUE EYE GUY, whose stunning looks won everyone's hearts.

Over time, his colors darkened, and he grew into the big boy you see helping Mom at work in the pictures. Dorian has quite a following, especially after his recent entry in America's Favorite Pet contest, where he made it to the quarterfinals on his first try! He is my husband's therapy cat, snuggling in his arms and melting his heart daily. From a sickly kitten to a healthy 14-pounder, Dorian has come a long way and remains just as stunning as ever. He is the fourth cat we've adopted from HHPR, and all four of our current fur babies are from their adoptions.

Did you know that summer can be both fun and challenging for our feline friends? Here are some purr-fect tips and facts to keep your kitty safe and happy this season! 🐱

Hydration is Key 💧
Cats need plenty of water to stay cool. Make sure your cat always has fresh water available, and consider adding ice cubes to their water bowl for an extra treat!

Sun risk for Cats? ☀️
Cats can get sunburned too, especially those with light-colored fur or sparse hair. Keep your kitty indoors during peak sun hours!

Cool Spaces 🧊
Cats love finding cool spots to lounge. Provide a shaded area or a cool mat for them to relax on during hot days.

Beware of Heatstroke 🥵
Signs of heatstroke in cats include excessive panting, drooling, and lethargy. If you notice these symptoms, move your cat to a cooler place and contact your vet immediately.

Flea and Tick Prevention 🐜
Summer is peak season for fleas and ticks. Ensure your cat is protected with regular flea and tick treatments.

Meet HHPR’s New President

Halfway Home Pet Volunteers are happy to introduce you to our New President of our compassionate feline mission, Marcia Simonds, of Presque Isle. She has worked for 37 years at Burrelles as a department manager during most of that time. She has been married to Matt Simonds for 36 years and
have two grown children Chelsea and Emily.

Marcia says that she felt closer to the animals at the pet rescue by volunteering for a small volunteer based pet rescue and she soon proved that when she failed
as a foster parent by adopting Sam and Sadie.

Marcia met semi-feral Rosie and her heart turned inside out and now Rosie is a sweet loving member of the family. Then they gave big chance to a little disabled kitten, Theo, who lost the use of his back legs. With time, patience and lots of loving Theo is now flying around their house on all 4 feet.

Marcia was nominated and voted onto the Board of Directors in 2023. Her initiative, honesty, calm nature and devotion to the cat mission is a
huge plus for HHPR.

Of course, every day the work load at HHPR increases and Marcia was soon asked to help with the clinics
in 2023 and according to Norma, did such a great job that she was promoted to Spay Clinic Director. A well deserved promotion with a bonus of loving kisses from cats needing sterilization.

Downtime does not exist at Halfway Home Pet Rescue and when Norma was no longer able to keep up with the Presidential duties, she requested that Marcia step up to the plate as of May 1, 2024.

We are so lucky to have you, Marcia!

Scratching is a natural behavior for cats, but did you know it's also one of the reasons many end up in shelters?

🐾😺 Tips for Happy Scratching Cats! 😺🐾

Scratching Posts/Furniture: Provide cats with scratching posts and furniture meant for scratching. Place them strategically where cats are already scratching or where you'd prefer them to scratch. Enhance the appeal with catnip spray!

Variety is Key: Offer different textures like sisal rope, carpet, cardboard, and wood. Cats love variety! Provide vertical, horizontal, and slanted scratching surfaces to mimic trees.

Use Humane Deterrents: Discourage scratching in unwanted areas with humane methods like double-sided tape, foil, or scents like menthol or citrus. Avoid anything harmful to cats. Redirect behavior, don't punish.

Trim Claws Regularly: Keep your cat's claws trimmed to reduce damage when they scratch. Use sharp trimmers and replace them regularly. Regular trimming may also lessen the urge to scratch.

Toys Galore: Offer plenty of toys and playtime to keep your cat entertained and channel their energy positively. This can redirect their scratching instinct.

Remember: Say NO to Declawing: Declawing is unnecessary and cruel. It involves amputating the last joints of a cat's toes and can cause long-term harm. Let's keep our furry friends happy and healthy! 🐾
