For International Tripawd Awareness Day lets meet a new friend. Meet Jake and read his amazing story below. 👇👇👇
Jake lost his right hind leg when he was 4 years old. With his previous owner he was an outside dog and would escape his yard often. His last time leaving the yard he ended up getting hit by a train (likely while hunting). He was found a few days later and went to the Humane Society in Harrisburg. His owner surrendered him at this time. The vets said that immediately after surgery Jake was up and walking and a happy boy on three legs.
Jake does everything a normal dog would do. He still does zoomies inside and outside of the house. He still is as fast as other dogs with all four legs. He also likes to chase squirrels and bunnies in the back yard. He loves going on walks and playing with the kids we have. Jake is a gentle boy and very empathetic with people, especially children. He loves to take care of them when they feel sad. Jake loves to cuddle with our family and often jumps up onto the bed or couch to sleep.
As a dog with three legs, care and upkeep is no different than a normal dog. We keep an eye on his weight and joints a little more diligently, so he doesn’t get too heavy for the three legs. For care this includes walks, running in the yard and monitoring his food intake.
Just like when adopting any dog, there may be past trauma that may come up. The only thing Jake experiences is some phantom pains where his leg once was. So he is a little more sensitive in this spot, however, that doesn’t stop him from rolling over and letting you pet his belly.
