H E A L T H

Just like in Humans, health is an important piece of the puzzle. Without good health, what do we really even have?

Many dogs in society are overweight/obese and have well intentioned owners. They follow the feed instructions on the bag or give their dogs treats to show love.

HINT: dog food companies make more money the more you feed and the more you have to buy. There’s also a wide range in those measurements.

Watch your dogs body composition. If they are more active, up their food if necessary. If they are less active, decrease their food as necessary.

I never use the back of the bag instructions as my end all be all. I watch my dogs body condition and adjust the food accordingly.

Every dog is different, just like us humans. They metabolize different, their activity levels are different. It’s not a one size fits all type of approach.

Excess weight in your dog can shorten your dogs life by a couple years, as well as put them at increased risk for many health issues. More health issues mean more vet visits which means it costs you more money.

Not only that, but it can take YEARS off your dogs life.

I don’t know about you, but I want mine to live as long as possible.

You don’t have to feed the fanciest food. Can’t afford high quality or raw? That’s ok. Just keep an eye on the body condition.

Your dog should have a tuck on its underline and a waist. You should barely be able to see/feel ribs.

I said what I said.

Here’s the thing…if you have 1 dog who isn’t trained & has behavioral issues, you don’t need a 2nd dog. Get the 1st dog under control first.

If you have multiple dogs who aren’t trained or fulfilled & have behavioral issues, you sure as s**t don’t need to add another dog to the mix. When they are trained & under control, then get another dog.

For example, having reactive dogs and adding a new dog to the mix, won’t stop your dogs reactivity…instead, you’ll more than likely cause the new dog to be reactive. And won’t that be fun to have a whole pack of reactive dogs 🙃🫣. Not. Then what will happen is you’ll quit going for walks altogether because it’s too chaotic and stressful, which in turn means the dogs likely won’t get anything done with them and will end up pent up and frustrated & likely get MORE issues.

Let’s do better people. Let’s be responsible dog owners.

Make responsible dog ownership cool again.

Make well trained dogs normal again.

People are often baffled that their dog still isn’t “tired” after going for a 5 mile run.

While the run is great for physical exercise, which dogs need, a dog typically doesn’t get a lot of good, healthy mental stimulation in the way of working their brain.
So although your dog may be physically tired, it’s brain can still be running.

Also, if you’re taking your dog on daily 5 mile runs, you could be conditioning an athlete which means your dog will be in even better shape & take more and more to “physically tire”.

Less can be more. Absolutely take your dog for a run if it enjoys running (the physical exercise is good), but be careful how much and how often and most importantly, don’t forget to do activities where the dog has to use their 🧠. Most people are shocked when their dog is totally tired after a 10 min training session.

What are some things that you do with your dog to get them mentally tired?

You often times hear people say “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”

I’m here to tell you that you can.

Dogs are smart.

It’s never too late to start training or teaching your dog something new.

Yep. I said what I said.

If all of our training sessions are always perfect, are we even improving?

People always struggle with difficult training sessions, even I’m guilty of that from time to time, but there’s so much to learn from those sessions.

That’s where we find holes & expose new weaknesses to work on. It’s giving you feedback on how to improve.

It’s not always personal either. A lot of owners tend to take things personally with their dogs, but the other thing to remember is that they are not robots. They are living, breathing beings like us who are going to have off days.

As amazing as it feels to have a great session, there is much to learn in a bad session as well. It’s how you use that information that counts.

CONSISTENCY

If there’s one thing that will help you in your dog training, it’s consistency.

Consistency can hurt it too.

Are you consistently showing & expecting your dog to do the things you want it to do? That’s a game changer.

Or are you consistently NOT doing anything to change the poor behaviors.

You can pick how you are consistent. You can be consistently good with your dog or consistently bad/lazy.

If you are wanting to make changes and help improve your dogs behavior, being consistent in showing the dog GOOD things, is going to get you a lot farther.

Even if you end up short on time on day, just be consistent with the smaller things. Don’t let the dog rush out of the kennel, front door or car door, have them wait calmly for food.
