Say hello to Hasmeena, a 5-year-old Doberman Pinscher, who was initially referred to the Internal Medicine department at MedVet Indianapolis for evaluation of elevated liver enzymes. Because Hasmeena's liver values continued to climb over several months of monitoring, Dr. Scott Owens opted to investigate further with liver biopsies.
The biopsies revealed a chronic active hepatitis (a syndrome that involves chronic inflammation of the liver) secondary to copper storage disease, a potentially fatal condition that prevents the liver from removing excess copper from the body. Fortunately, Hasmeena's condition was caught early and was treated.
We're thrilled to share that Hasmeena is thriving — her liver enzymes are steadily improving and her medication doses are slowly being lowered as a result. Way to go, Hasmeena! 💙

Prevent Lyme disease in your pet by knowing how to safely remove a tick. For instructions and precautions, see our video:
If you find a tick on your pet, you’ll want to remove it as soon as possible. To remove, firmly grasp the head of the tick (and not the body) with fine-point...
Many of us will be heading outdoors during the warm months ahead, which means a higher chance of tick exposure for us, and our pets. Ticks can carry diseases, like Lyme disease, that pose serious health risks. Be wary of overgrown bushes, dense vegetation, and excessive yard debris, as these are prime hideouts for ticks.
