Westchester K-9 customizes all of our services to fit your specific needs to your dog. We believe in treating each dog and it's owner as an individual. After all, no two dogs are alike the same way no two people are alike. We draw from a wide range of tools and techniques to help facilitate reaching your training goals as well as vastly improving the relationship between you and your canine compan

ion. After working with one of our certified and knowledgeable trainers, not only will you have a better behaved dog, you will also have a greater understanding of how dogs learn and perceive the world, in addition to better handling skills to help your dog in any situation. We address any and all training matters such as leash pulling/reactivity, jumping, counter surfing, housebreaking, door bolting, running away, understanding property boundaries, retrieval, puppy imprinting and of course obedience. We also have programs for dogs exhibiting behavior issues like fear, aggression, resource guarding, anxiety, hyperactivity and socialization problems.

Nala and Roxie became fast friends during their stay. Training and playing with a friend is always better. Nala continues to work on her general listening and getting comfortable out and about. She is truly doing amazing. Roxie needed some help with her leash reactivity, and with a little guidance and a lot of structure, she happily walked past all the distractions. Great job girls.

This weeks training outings consisted of confidence work and building focus. If you want your dogs to listen and focus on you, it takes practice and patience. Key elements; do not let them say hi to all the people and all the dogs. Do not bring them to the dog park for free play. Train first how to walk on a loose leash and walk past all those distractions. Teach your dog to play with you while other things are happening around them. If you are more interesting and fun, they will want to hang with you. If your walk consists of letting them say hi to everyone and letting them in the dog park while pulling you to get there; they will always want those things more which leads to major leash reactivity. This is the biggest problem we see with our clients. Most of these dogs with reactivity problems go to doggie daycare and have not had proper socialization and exposure. Start training at an early age to prevent this, and continue training. Need help? Let us know!

Impulse control! Being able to control your dogs energy level is an important part of training. Dogs need you to provide them with communication. Let them know when it’s time to play, and let them know when play time is over. There are so many dogs out there demanding attention of their owners all day, and this creates a lot of frustration. Thank you for bringing these cuties to us for their temperament testing. Anyone looking for a poodle, please reach out to them. This was an amazingly well balanced litter of puppies. Leevell, the owner of JuVar poodles is very invested in the proper upbringing of his pups and it shows. We are excited for these pups to go to their new homes this week. 🐾

Doorway manners! We love to practice teaching dogs not to run out of open doorways. I feel this is one of the most important things you can teach your dog. Practicing wait or stay when the door is open can be challenging but the more you practice, the better your dog will be in this situation when people come over or the door is left open. We will also allow the dogs to run out the door (when we say so), and then practice a recall. If you make this a fun game, and your dog does run out, they will happily come back when called. Romeo is a Portuguese water dog who was having some aggression issues at home.
He is going home from our advanced Board and train program where his family will learn some new rules to apply. Once they learn how to communicate properly and set up Romeo for success, they will be able to enjoy him more and not be scared of the aggression.
Romeo’s friends, Cosmo and Maggie who have already graduated from our program are following along and enjoying the training too.
The foundation never leaves, so when we reinforce that training, they happily do exactly what we ask. Once you lay down some ground rules and structure, your dog will respect you and love you so much more. They thrive when they know exactly what is expected from them.
