Having a pet is a fantastic experience, but do you know the scary part of having an animal? It is taking the pet to the vet. Like many of us, they are also afraid of visiting doctors. They cannot express their feelings with words as we do. But, the Carroll County Veterinary Clinic in Westminster, [....

We can use some help. Over the past six weeks, we have taken in over 50 dogs from an Amish puppy mill that decided to give up their dogs. A lot of them have been Bernese Mountain dogs and related "designer" mixes. Most of them have been in decent shape which is both surprising and fortunate, but a handful have not been. Tilly is one of the not so fortunate ones.

Tilly is a 2-year-old Bernese mountain dog. She is incredibly sweet and she is a genetic orthopedic disaster. She arrived with ACL tears in both knees and with hips that are functionally nonexistent. She’s fixable, but it’s an expensive fix. The other option is to euthanize her which no one wants to do. Step 1 is bilateral knee surgery which we will do next week. The hope is that this will stabilize her gait and greatly improve her pain. After 8 weeks, we can address the hips one at a time which while bad, are repairable. (Xray in the comments for the nerds among us).

Anytime we take in a case like this, it’s just expensive because of the sheer numbers. We have golden doodles, Bernese mountain dog doodles, and every combination of big dog with doodle that you can think of. It will be a great day when the doodle craze dies off because it’s not a good thing for the dogs. For those chomping at the bit to adopt, slow your roll. It will be a while.

When my yellow Lab died last spring, I was flattened by an overwhelming sadness that’s with me still. And that’s normal, experts say, because losing a pet is often one of the hardest yet least acknowledged traumas we’ll ever face.

🌹🌹🌹All the little cat spirits were crossing the rainbow bridge when one of them looked back and saw some cats' souls laying on the other side of the bridge, not moving.

“Who are they?” he asked the cat next to him.

“Oh, don’t you know they are the souls who had no owner in life and knew no love like we did."

“So what are they laying there for?” he asked “Why don’t they cross over like us?”

“They can’t.” replied his new friend “Only pets with owners can cross."

Just then all the souls on the other side of the bridge sat up and looked down the road.

"What’s happening?" asked the little cat. “Watch!” replied his friend.

Whereupon a woman was seen walking towards the bridge. She looked to her left and then to her right then opened her arms wide and all the patiently waiting souls got up and went to her.

She knelt and touched each and every spirit in turn.

They then all proceeded to cross the bridge together.

“Who is that?” he asked his friend.

“That is someone special.” replied his friend “She is a rescuer." 🐈🐈‍⬛🐈
