When introducing a rider for the first time, many people want to see w/t/c right away. I’m not one of those people. I’m not saying they’re wrong, it’s just simply not my style. During a first introduction, I look for a horse that’s standing to be mounted, quiet while I’m getting my leg over, and one who doesn’t want to take a step without direction to do so. You’ll see at the end, once I’m off, I take her away from where I was getting on/off. I do this so that I am the one still in control of their feet. I don’t want my horses taking off while I’m mounting, while I’m adjusting myself, etc. This is all a set up for a great foundation and a well-mannered horse. #horsetraining #coltstarting #horsetrainer #horsemanship

I didn’t plan on working any horses today. Kind of had a lazy Sunday planned for myself after being busy all week, but of course I ended up riding with some friends.
Today for fun we started introducing the lay down while mounted.
She’s taking to it quickly, but as you can see she caught me off guard standing back up right away🤣
I love my little roan❤️
He really does best with positive reinforcement!
I’ve been working with Tux on ground tying, and coming when called (whistle).
He’s doing very well.
I do like to do some liberty exercises with him so he can feel a bit more comfortable of his own actions.
It also takes a step away from all the “scary” work, and gives him some time to decompress. He’s such a sweet boy❤️
Say hello to this cutie!
She is a 5 year old BLM mustang who likes to buck her rider off. She has learned that getting the rider off=done working.
We are going to restart under saddle. Here is her first session with weighted legs. She did bolt as soon as they were on, but we didn’t get that on video. She didn’t offer to buck, but did want to run away, and fast.
She settled in after about a minute of freak out. Here is her lunging and figuring things out.
She did very well overall. A lot of licking and chewing when I took them off as well!
Tonight Tux got brushed for his first time!
He also surprised me and let me walk right up and pet him. When I back away, he followed and let me pet him again.
I am in absolute awe still!
I swear this big guy gets to me every time he has a breakthrough. Tugs on my heartstrings ❤️
When I say I cried… I mean real tears, I’m still crying. This is such a huge step.
I didn’t mess with him for the last 2 days. I would go in, give him new hay/water, and his mash. That’s it.
Today, Tux reached out to me. Nibbling on my sweater with his lips until I pet him.
He’s truly special. He’s won my heart already. He’s going to make his owner a really great horse one day. I’m so grateful to be apart of his journey ❤️
