In light of what happen today I feel I need to state some facts about pet Grooming. Facts some may not know or understand, I have groomed more years then I can believe. I have worked for other shops I have worked in a veterinary office and have had a few of my own shops. I think Ive seen quite a bit over the years. My concern today is Nail trimming! Fact 1. in 35 plus years I have clipped Thousands of dog, cat, birds, rabbits, rats; well anyway I think I can say I know something about nail clipping. So fact about nail clipping if a pets nail bleeds when you clip it, that doesn't necessarily mean it was done wrong. There are many different reason this could happen like nail left to long and vein grown out, another, nail dremeled incorrectly, or when you clipped it you came close to the vein or it may not bleed at all until your pet walks around on a surface and scuffs it, or after clipping and a styptic powder was put on it to stop bleeding and pet walks on the wet ground. all these things can happen after nails have been clipped. Just because it has never happened doesn't mean it never will. I believe this is something every pet owner should be aware of so you can watch for any of these things to occur. Now what to do if it dose happen. Use Styptic powder or, if you don't have any thing else use sugar, cornstarch or even flour to stop the bleeding by placing small amount on nail and apply pressure until it stops. I have only seen one case that a dog continued to bleed and it was because dog was a bleeder and the nail had to be cauterized. And no it was not my work! I have never had this happen. I have so many clients come in just for nail trimming alone and have had a few nails bleed because of a couple of the reasons I have stated above. Most people know and understand. I love pet Grooming but its stuff like this that make your day real tuff. When someone dose not know how or why this can happen. And with lack of knowledge calls and is totally not understanding and refuses to listen when you try explaining. I'm sorry but the customer is not always right. If you take your pet to a vet and get their shots and the dog falls ill from the shot given it doesn't make the vet responsible that the dog fell ill it happens sometimes when you do what is necessary for the health and protection of your pet. Now, I believe I need to make this negative into a positive... I'm going to start a question and answer post! I have always felt it only right to tell owner the truth about their pets and what and how they do with grooming. this is something believe me others I have worked for forbid me to do. I have been told before never tell a client their dog did anything but great. :( that's not me! my mother raised me to tell the truth. I know I'm also someone who tries to work with the problem pet. I pride myself on the work I do. but I'm also human so expect a hair or two out of place once in awhile. So if anyone has questions I would be glad to answer them to the best of my knowledge. I want to say Thank you to the many, many clients who trust me with their babies I love and appreciate all of you and your babies. Kara
