Working on Duncanâs emergency recall this morning! Iâm calling him from his favorite sniffy spot, the bottom of a tree which has everything from squirrels to possums (and probably a few things I donât know about) around it all the time.
Want to learn how to be more captivating than a cat? More tantalizing than a tree? More awesome than a possum?
OkâŚno more bad analogies, I promise!

Isla & Flirt Pole
đ§ Did you know that genetics play a role in dog behavior? đ§
Humans have selectively bred dogs for hundreds of years to emphasize different behaviors that are useful to us.
Let's look at herding breeds, for instance. Herding breeds include Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Shelties, Collies, German Shepherds, and quite a few other breeds too.
Many of you who live with herding breeds know their high levels of energy and their need to chase and control things. We've bred all of these breeds to help us with livestock, especially with moving livestock. So, a high drive to chase moving things is a good thing, right?
It absolutely is for the lucky herders who have jobs that meet that need to chase. But most herding breeds find themselves out of work and in pet homes today.
How as a pet owner do we provide an outlet for that need to chase?
We know that if we don't provide a human-approved outlet, the dogs will find their own--and it's usually not good. Chasing cats, squirrels, birds, cars, skateboards, lawnmowers...anything that moves...will be the dogs' substitute of choice.
One of our favorite solutions is flirt-pole play. Think of a flirt pole as a giant cat toy. Flirt poles provide a great outlet for chasing a safe object, making it less likely your pet will feel the need to chase less desirable things. They are also a great way to play and bond with your dog, while providing a quick bit of exercise too!
Check out our Puppy Prodigy, Isla the German Shepherd pup, playing with the flirt pole as a break during training.

Gimme the Za!
This is Arya. She has noticed that Iâve helped myself to a snack of leftover homemade pizza from the fridge. Arya too appreciates cold pizza.
Her eyes are wide. Sheâs all noseânostrils taking in the aroma of cheese and garlic. Drool is pooling inside of her mouth. She licks her lips with anticipation. She hopes her MMM (Malinios Mind Meld) will work and I will deliver a bite.
ButâŚwait! Isnât begging bad? My clients ask me this question every day.
Have you thought about it from your dogâs perspective? Iâll leave out some of Aryaâs more colorful language, but I suspect that her inner monologue goes something like this:
âSure, Mom. Help yourself to the tasty goodness you stash in that cold box I canât open for myself. Thumbs must be amazing.â
It must be miserable to be a dogâto be able to smell all of the goodness in our refrigerators and pantries, yet never have any access to it. Iâm sure dogs get a little snacky like we do in the middle of the dayâbut they canât help themselves to a little something something.
I would beg too!
We can help you and your dog bothâŚ
You can eat without the sad puppy dog eyes guilting you. And your pup can learn what you want him to do instead of beggingâŚand earn a few snacks along the way too!

The Make Sit Happen Challenge
Who is ready for a training challenge?
Ask your dog to sit while you do the following:
Stand in the kitchen
Sit on the floor
Turn your back to your dog
Stand on a chair
Turn in a circle
Stand on 1 foot
Look at the ceiling
Lay on your back on the couch or floor
Whose dog sat every time? What was the easiest? What was the hardest?
Extra points for video or pix of you performing the challenge with your dog. Here is my unedited footage of trying the flat on your back challenge with Arya.
