This sweet girl is learning to relax and entertain herself with toys while someone is working on the computer. Part of being able to do that means that she is getting enough sleep and down time throughout the day. She has active times and down times. What great skills for a young puppy to have! Good girl!!

Are you and your dog(s) enjoying the cooler days? Time spent outside with your dog can be a great way to play and have fun together. Last night, my dog and I went for a walk to check up nearly every tree together, just in case there was a squirrel.

Working with fearful and anxious dogs can be a challenge for the families who love and care for them. There are many days when the words of Adam Lambert play in my head as I try to look through the eyes of the dog as they view the world and the often scary situations they find themselves in.

"Whataya want from me? Just don't give up. I'm working it out. Just don't give in. I won't let you down." Dogs really are special. I am thankful for all all of my amazing clients who learn to listen to their dogs. They realize it's not about control. They learn to read body language and help their dog feel safer in the process.

Since it is cooler early in the mornings, and then cools off a little later in the evenings, we get the pups out to play for a bit. We are there to supervise, and they have access to cool, fresh water as they play. We limit the outside playtime to keep them from overheating, but they enjoy stretching their legs when the heat of the day has subsided. During the day, we play inside, and let them nap, or play inside games. Fetch and chase are the favorites!

The summer temps are warming up. The weekend temps are predicted to be in the 90's. What fun, indoor activities will you and your dogs do? My dogs love to play hide and seek and hunt for Easter eggs with treats hidden inside. We also have food puzzle toys and stuffed Kongs. These are all great activities for preventing boredom too!

It looks like it is going to be a beautiful weekend for getting out with our dogs! If you are looking for a fun training activity to do outside, go to a new location where your dog is on leash and reward your dog with a treat every time they look at you without prompting. You will be amazed at how this improves a "check in" behavior on leash.

I got to do one of my favorite things yesterday. I met a sweet client at the shelter to help select a good fit to be their newest family member. After 7 months at the shelter, this beautiful, sweet, fun, happy, energetic girl, Breeze, spent her first night outside the shelter, in her new home, and in her own bed, last night. So very grateful to be part of such a happy day!
