Great Dane Rescue of North Texas, Inc.

Great Dane Rescue of North Texas, Inc. GDRNT rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes Great Danes in North Texas. Great Dane Rescue of North Texas, Inc.

is an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing medical attention and foster care while seeking permanent homes for abandoned Great Danes in the North Texas area. GDRNT works with animal shelters to save the lives of Great Danes on death row. Many dogs that come into our program are sick, injured or have suffered abuse but there are just as many happy, healthy, well-ad

justed Great Danes that find themselves facing the euthanasia needle because of hardships faced by their families. GDRNT finds loving and knowledgeable permanent homes; educates the public about the temperament, characteristics and special needs of the Great Dane breed; teaches responsible pet ownership; and promotes animal identification programs, spay/neuter programs and general animal population control. We do not have a shelter – all the Great Danes in our care are placed in trained foster homes after the dog is spay/neutered, heartworm tested, given Rabies, DHLPPC and Bordetella vaccinations, f***l tested, micochipped and treated for any other necessary veterinary needs. While a Great Dane is in GDRNT’s care, it lives as part of a foster family. During this time, each Dane’s health and temperament is evaluated which helps us make appropriate permanent placements in approved adoptive homes. In addition to providing medical and emotional rehabilitation, all foster homes crate train, work on basic obedience and housebreaking. This organization could not exist without its many volunteers. Some people donate their time by fostering, and some donate their time through administrative work or transporting sick dogs, while others donate money to support the cause. It’s not often we get to properly thank these people for their long hours and dedication to this breed because it seems that just as one dog gets to go to its forever home, several more dogs come in. Fortunately, the people who do this sort of work appreciate the sight of a once homeless dog driving off with its new family more than pats-on-the-back from other humans.

Please for the love of all things…
5th of July is the busiest day of the year at local shelters.

-Keep them inside if you know about scheduled events.. and consider leash walking in your yard. If your neighbors are inconsiderate with crappy firework shows
-If your pet has anxiety around fireworks call your vet NOW
-Be ready with frozen kongs or bully sticks… secure crate, music whatever helps soothe your pup.
-Check your fence to be sure it is secure for potty breaks.
-if your dog is chipped be sure the info is accurate (have you moved? Does it still have your land line?)
-are your tags secure?
-duct tape is one way to get your info in your pet to assure quick reunification

🧨💥🧨‼️💥🧨‼️💥🧨‼️💥🧨‼️💥🧨
It likely begins this weekend!! Every year more animals go missing around July 4th than any other time, running scared from fireworks. Please take this time to be sure your pet’s microchip registration is up to date, or have them chipped if not already. Be sure they are wearing indentification, it can be as simple as the example in this pic. Bring them inside, away from the noise, it’s scary for most pets, they feel they’re in a war zone!!! Some pets go missing and never return home, some are hit by vehicles and killed, it happens EVERY YEAR at this time. Don’t let you furry love be a statistic!!

Meet Babs: Your Energetic and Loving Companion!
Babs is a delightful young Great Dane mix with a beautiful caramel coat, a striking black mask, and charming “eyeliner” markings. She’s on the smaller side for her breed, making her a perfect fit for those who love Great Danes but might have space constraints.
This spirited girl is full of energy and loves to be in the middle of the action. Whether it’s playing with her foster brother or going for walks, Babs is always ready for some fun. She’s very curious and still learning what she can and cannot have, so keeping floors clear is essential to avoid any impromptu snacking.
Babs is housebroken, though she might have an occasional accident if not let out regularly. She picks up commands quickly, showing just how smart and eager to please she is. Her playful nature extends to her interactions with other dogs, and she gets along well with kids, making her a great addition to a family home.
Loving attention and rarely tiring, Babs thrives in environments where she’s surrounded by activity and companionship. If you’re looking for a loyal, active, and affectionate dog who will keep you on your toes and fill your days with joy, Babs is the one for you

Babs is available for adoption in the Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex. Visit danerescue.net to find out more info about our adoption process and complete the adoption application.

Please secure your fences, bring your pets inside … be sure they have tags with your cell phone and if microchipped be sure that info is current.

Our hearts are with those impacted by the recent storms … please everyone be safe

The main threat Tuesday night will be a line of storms moving in off the dryline that have the potential of damaging straight-line winds, large hail and a low potential of an isolated tornado.

Doli is a nosey little guy with lots of personality. He's great with kids, good with cats and wants to be everyone's friend. He wants to be in the middle of everything, part of the pack and thinks it's his job to bring the fun! He loves toys, will fetch all day long and loves to be outside as long as you're out there with him. He's a snuggler and ONLY wants to sleep directly on top of his Foster brother! He is crate trained and will let you know when he needs to go out, but it's subtle. It's the only thing he's subtle about. If you're looking for a smaller guy with a great story and some really cool scars, Doli is your guy!
Doli is available for adoption in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Visit danerescue.net to find more info about our adoption process and complete the adoption application.

Jagger is still looking for his forever home:). Could that be you ?

Jagger is a chill Dane who enjoys lots of naps (who doesn’t) but finds his energy at evening play time. Our vets have aged him at 6, but he does NOT act his age. While he is shy around new people, he opens up and is playful quickly and is an absolute sweetheart. Jagger is very calm around tiny children and other dogs. He is very curious and likes to explore and lick everything. His latest interest are sitting in spaces too small for him and occasionally falling off.

Jagger is available for adoption in the Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex. Visit danerescue.net to find out more info about our adoption process and complete the adoption application.

Poppy

This beautiful girl came from a small shelter that does a great job. This chicka was in playgroups and happy as a lark…. Totally unaware she was in a municipal shelter above capacity ….We all see the sad pics in the shelter of sad pups … but not this girl! .. We suspect a life of hardship allowed her to think the shelter was the Ritz … she is figuring out how life is in her foster home with three older Great Dane brothers and doing great. Is friendly and loving with people, but will need to work on walking on a leash.
Poppy is available for adoption in the Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex. Visit danerescue.net to find out more info about our adoption process and complete the adoption application.

Pepper

Pepper is a very pretty one year old Blue Merle, with the cutest different colored eyes. She is playful and full of puppy energy, which means that she has a tendency to be a bit clumsy with her enthusiasm. She is housetrained and has learned how to use the doggy door at her foster's. She loves playing with bones and dog toys, especially the stuffed ones with squeakers, though they won't stay stuffed or squeak for long. Pepper really loves her people and will follow and snuggle whenever she can. She wants nothing more than to be close to you.

Pepper is available for adoption in the Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex. Visit danerescue.net to find out more info about our adoption process and complete the adoption application.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Stay with me on this …. Rescue has been a kick in the butt lately but then you get a message from a loving home thanking you.

Moby’s fund was set up to help our shelters with medical expenses they do not have the budget for. Many small shelters rely on low cost clinics for their spay/ neuter services … many of those same low cost alters will not alter dogs over a 60 or 80 pounds …. (This is a rant for another day) Meaning the adopter must sign a contact paying for the alter at a normal veterinary clinic.

This family saved to adopt a dog and the fee to cover the low cost clinic only to be denied by the low costs clinic because the dog was 100 pounds … when they went to their local veterinarian they were quoted over $500 for a spay for their Dane mix!! And the alter could not be done till January !!!

The shelter manager called me looking for suggestions so this sweet pup could be adopted by this loving home.

GDRNT was able to get an alter appointment sooner with one of our amazing clinics and cover the additional costs.

Today that sweet pup is in a loving home feeling grateful for the assistance. Sometimes rescue looks different and with our shelters overflowing with discarded pups and the rising cost of veterinary care, GDRNT is looking for non traditional ways to help our shelters and loving owners.

Thank you to our donors and supporters, Moby’s Fund only existed because of your generosity.

Many people are familiar with the 3-3-3 rule when bringing one a new pet and honestly it has always made me cringe at the over generalization… Focus on the dog in front of you, give them space and time that they need to build the relationship.

As humans we know adoption day is a great, happy day but to our pets it can be confusing… they need time to know they are safe … some dogs that may be an hour or so .. some may be a few months … focus on the dog in front of you, in that moment.

We’ve started to see posts popping up again with the 3-3-3 “rule” and while the intention is good: giving newly adopted animals “three days to decompress, three weeks to learn your routine, and three months to start to feel at home” this is a wildly inaccurate picture for many animals, especially those who spend a long time in the shelter or come up to Maine on a transport. Both Lana and Tessa took substantially more time before they felt consistently safe and relaxed in our home, with Tessa I would say about a year. A more realistic number I’ve experienced is closer to two months just to decompress. Why is this important? We need to have realistic expectations of our new pets to set them up to be successful in their new homes. What can two months of decompression look like?

-Keeping their world small: not introducing them to new people, dogs, or environments. Let them feels safe in your home and the people there first.
-Forget about obedience. Does your newly adopted dog need to sit for their food or to go outside? No. But it does help them if they can learn that their behavior makes good things happen. Reward behaviors you like as they appear. Other skills can come later.
-Give your dog lots of opportunities to do dog things: sniff, chew, lick, explore the yard and the house. Give them space as they do these things.
-Spend time together. Give your dog more than a day or two getting familiar with you and their new home before you head back to work and they’re suddenly alone for the day.

In short, take it slow. Like reeeeeaally slow. Slower than that. Give your dog as much time as they need to feel safe in their new home, there’s no rule when this happens. (Picture of Lana and Tessa in their first meeting, when we brought Tessa home 🥰)

Freeeedooommm Ride for Wilbur! Wilbur was not super sure about leaving the shelter as the world seemed kinda scary… this dude is not currently available as he is new to rescue. All newbies get a full medical exam, vaccines, microchip and a loving foster home. We give them some time to settle for an evaluation to see what additional training, what their personalities hold so that we can find them the right match for a FURever home. We only adopt in the DFW metroplex and our adoption application can be found at danerescue.net

Ok I had to share this.. THIS is what you want more then an “obedient” dog… if you establish a trust based relationship you will get the behavior you want … ask me how I know….

I am of a certain age when prong collars and “correction” training was the norm… I remember being introduced to positive training methods and it was a huge DUH moment … I have since used those methods on tons and tons of fosters and my personal dogs … it was a huge adjustment but the results speak for themselves!

Do your research beyond social media and find a partner in training

OWNERS: ASK any trainer or anyone working with your dog how he or she will create trust, resilience, a sense of safety and joy for your dog. PUNISHMENT provides for none of these critical needs that dogs must have and they deserve.
