Animals suffer from pain just like people do. Pain comes in many forms: surgical pain, arthritis and cancer related pain, just to name a few. Acute pain is obvious and distressing. Chronic pain can be subtle, and masked as “getting old” or “slowing down.” Old age is not a disease, but pain is.

TGIF - Let's talk about aggressive dog attacks for just a quick moment!

Understanding the Importance of Safety in Veterinary Clinics: As a community dedicated to the health and well-being of our pets, it’s essential to recognize the risks and challenges that veterinarians and clinic staff face daily. One significant concern is the potential for dog attacks, which can lead to serious injuries and trauma.

3 Reasons Dog Attacks Can Happen?
1) Fear and Anxiety: Dogs may experience stress or fear in unfamiliar environments, leading to defensive or aggressive behavior.
2) Pain or Discomfort: When dogs are in pain or feel threatened, they may react by lashing out.
3) Protectiveness: Some dogs may become overly protective of their owners or perceive veterinary staff as a threat.

3 ways you can help?
1) Preparation: Inform the veterinary staff about any past incidents of aggression or triggers your dog may have.
2)Training: Regular training and socialization can help reduce anxiety and aggression in dogs.
3)Proper Restraint: Use a leash, muzzle, or other appropriate restraint when visiting the clinic, if necessary.

Remember, a safe environment benefits everyone – our pets, their owners, and the dedicated veterinary staff who care for them!

Why Does All This Matter?

Prevention of Injuries: When veterinary staff are informed about a pet’s potential for aggression, they can take the necessary precautions to prevent injuries to themselves, the pet, and other animals in the clinic.

Customized Care: Understanding a pet’s behavior allows veterinarians to tailor their approach, minimizing stress and fear for the animal, which can often mitigate aggressive responses.

How to Communicate Effectively:
Be Honest: If your pet has a history of aggressive behavior or has shown signs of anxiety in the clinic, let the staff know. This information helps them prepare and respond appropriately.

Describe Triggers: Inform the staff about specific triggers that might provoke your pet, such as other animals, certain types of handling, or medical procedures.

Due to the nature of our practice, we have a policy against treating animals that display strong aggressive behavior.

We hope you found this post informational and that you all have a great weekend! Stay safe!

Did you know…..👇

We discuss a lot of treatment options during our initial consultations and Dr. Stramel goes over a significant amount information.

Research indicates that people tend to forget a significant portion of the information presented within a short timeframe.

Specifically, an average of 50% is forgotten after one hour and up to 90% in just seven days.

Want to ensure all valuable insights shared during Dr. Stramel's consultation are retained for longer than an hour or a day? Simply jotting them down with pen and paper can make a huge difference! Of course, receiving follow-up emails containing all key points certainly helps too. 😃

For the horse people!

🩺Tuesday Vet Tip 💡

Commercial feeds are deficient in iodine and salt as it will limit intake due to palatability. Forage is naturally low in iodine and salt as well.

Salt is critical for maintaining your horses’ hydration. Iodine is a vital part of thyroid function which includes cell regulation important for your horses’ metabolism and hoof growth.

A white salt block is a good option for summer months. However, not all horses prefer to lick a block. This time of year keeping a salt block can have the added difficulty of it melting 🫠.

Adding 2TBSP iodized salt 🧂 to your horses grain will meet the average horses salt and iodine requirements.

If you are using a white salt block, your horse should be consuming an ounce per day, roughly 2 lbs a month. Mark your calendar 📆 when you purchase a block and do the math that your horse is actually consuming the appropriate amount.
