Having been a veterinarian for almost 3 decades, I have seen the tide of how animals are treated change drastically. When I graduated dogs were dogs, now dogs are considered to be higher ranking than people. In our crazy world, people love their dogs more than they love their own families and they treat their dogs better than they treat other humans and I am sorry to say that we are destroying our dogs mental health because of it.

It is increasingly common to go into an exam room and have a dog that is growling at me and trying to bite and the owner is petting it telling it that it is a good dog. It is NOT being a good dog and it should not be rewarded for growling and trying to bite. It is important that we train our dogs properly and we use right language with them. Never is it ok for a dog to growl and try and bite in an exam room where nothing horrible is happening to them and feeding into that behavior does not make it better for your dog, it trains them that their fear is a good thing and it is not.

Mental disorders are exponentially increasing in our dogs and it is us owners fault. Please stop treating your dog like it is some fragile child and start treating it like it is a dog. TRAIN them and teach them commands and correct them when they are wrong and stop thinking you are going to hurt their feelings if you do. Dogs are dogs, not small humans. They need training and proper instructions or it leads to horrible anxiety issues in them and I can assure that that behavior is going to hurt your feelings way more than being an adult and training your dog to be a good dog instead of a spoiled child.

The following are a few copied excerpts from an article that I read this morning from a dog trainer. I feel like there are a good reminder for all of us on exactly what are dogs are and what they need.

"Your dog is a dog, not a human child. Constant unearned affection is a killer and creates an unhealthy addiction for both dog and owner. Your dog will love you unconditionally but will never respect you unless you give it reason to.

The most basic of basics, your dog must learn how to be still in any situation. If your dog can’t be still around any distraction, you will never have control.
Recall
Sit
Down
Walk nicely on leash
Out, meaning release anything in your mouth

You MUST have a language dedicated to your dog that your dog can learn by you being consistent and applying meaning to the words you use. Your dog MUST know what yes means, but also MUST know what NO means. If nothing comes after those words, yes equals reward for good, no equals correction for bad, your dog will never give meaning to either. Your dog’s name is not a command, or correction. NO should not be your dog’s middle name.

The training starts the second you bring the dog home."

Sweet Tilly is looking for her forever home. I've had quite a bit of interest but nobody has followed through. Tilly is a one year old Australian Shepherd about thirty pounds. She is very petite and quiet, I hardly notice she is there. She would do best in a quiet home. Might even be good for a senior, though she does love kids. I have not had her around toddlers, but I do have older kids and she loves them. She is good with all other animals including farm animals. And she does like to play with other dogs that aren't overbearing and two hyper. She is crate trained and likes her crate and will sit in there quietly. She walks good on a leash and does not pull. She does okay off leash, but will bolt if something scares her, if you call her she comes right back. She is a little timid but she is very sweet and has gained a lot of confidence with me, and is ready to move on to her forever family. She is spayed, fully vaccinated and will be microchipped for her new home. Currently located in Blackfoot, Idaho, but transport can be arranged to other areas. Zack is here. He's telling everyone he's ready to go to his forever home. He's friendly, likes other cats and is ok with dogs. He really likes to be held and will yell at you for attention, he's a talker. Have you ever met a kitty that likes belly rubs? This one does and will roll over for them. This little guy is around 4-5 months old, neutered, dewormed, vaccinated and microchipped. Zach will be available to go home tomorrow 8/20/24. Currently located at Awesome Pawsome in Blackfoot.

Jack Jack and Maxine are brother and sister about 8 months old. Both puppies are great with other dogs of all shapes and sizes. They like kids and are even good with cats and chickens. Would probably do best in a home with older children as they are still puppies and have puppy energy. They've been doing great with house training, only having occasional accidents as they are still learning. Both pups are crate trained and walk great on a leash. They can be adopted together or separate, but would need a home with another dog to play with. Vet checked with spay/neuter, all vaccines and microchip included with adoption. Located in Blackfoot, Idaho and transport can be arranged to approved home. Please pm if interested.

Hello everyone. I will be out for the next few days due to a cat bite injury. Please be patient with me as I try to respond to all the messages I have received in the past couple of days. I have over fifty text messages and voicemails that I need to respond to and I will not be able to get back to everybody all at once. I'm not ignoring anyone, just overwhelmed at the moment. This little guy was brought to me by an awesome lady who found him dumped on her property after being tossed from a car. I will never understand how people can be so cruel. How someone can have a total disregard for an innocent, pure little life. This is little Billy. His nose is completely skinned, he has a degloved lip and scratches all over. He was completely dehydrated so who knows how long he had been out there. He purrs and loves attention, he is absolutely precious. He will be needing vet care for his lip, I am hoping he won't need surgery but I will be calling in the morning to see when they can get him in and we might be needing to raise funds for him. He will also need a home when he's a bit bigger and healed. Please let me know if you would like to help with little Billy's vet care or possibly interested in adopting.

Freya is Novas sister, also born to a feral mama from a Utah reservation. 6-7 months old, She's a little bit bigger than Nova. They have these super cute curly tails and funny expressions. Freya is good with other dogs and cats as well. Likes to wrestle and play with the other dogs. She is pretty submissive to the other dogs. Does have a chicken allergy and Ive been feeding her beef and she's been doing great on the beef. Super snuggly and sweet.

Nova is a 6-7 months old mixed breed, medium size. She came from a reservation after being born to a feral mama. Good with other dogs and cats. House trained and crate trained but still working on manners as she is a puppy. Really likes to wrestle and play with the other dogs. Very sweet and snuggly, Nova seems to prefer men over women. Shortly after I had gotten her, she had gotten very sick and spent quite a bit of time at the vet. She almost did not make it, but she faught hard with everything she had. Her vet had found her to have some sort of infection attacking her nervous system and itbwas a long to road to recovery. She is a hundred percent healthy now.

Jack and Dixie came in for a visit. They are both available for adoption through Crazy Lady Rescue in Pocatello. These two are awesome dogs, and I mean awesome.
