Last week, we shared a video of a patient with severe periodontal disease. This week, we would like to show you a mild case. There are 4 stages of periodontal disease, and this little guy is right in the middle, a stage 2. While both pets benefitted from having their teeth cleaned, getting control of the plaque and bacteria buildup in the earlier stages of periodontal disease results in healthier teeth and gums during your pet’s lifetime.

What can I do for my dog between dental cleanings? In our video today, two of our staff members, Robyn Klysen and Heather Griffin, will give you some tips on how to care for your pet’s teeth. There are also a few daily activities you can do at home to help prevent dog periodontal disease.
Give your dog a dental chew. We recommend Oravet chews. The dense, chewy texture helps scrub away existing plaque while your dog chews it. It also releases an ingredient called delmopinol, which is the same ingredient found in our mouth wash. Delmopinol creates a barrier and prevents the buildup of tartar and bacteria on the teeth, tongue, and gums for 24 hours. Since February is dental month, each pet who has a dental cleaning will receive a complimentary 14 count of Oravet chews.

Stage 4 Periodontal Disease
February is dental health month. We would like to give you information throughout the month in regards to the importance of good dental health.
The video below was taken of a 12 year old patient with stage 4 periodontal disease. This sweet boy came in for an oral exam, and during the examination, several issues raised a concern. He had an abscess, loose teeth, bleeding gums, and accumulation of bacteria which was making him feel under the weather.
As you can see, the accumulation of bacteria and tartar was severe, putting the dog at risk of health problems. When bacteria build up on the teeth, they secrete toxins which can damage the heart, liver, kidneys, and brain.
Tip for the week: Flip the lip. Flipping up your pet’s lip allows you to see if there is tartar buildup on the teeth. It will also allow you to see if their gums are inflamed, which is an indicator that your pet needs to be seen for an oral exam.
Stay tuned for our next video which will discuss prevention, how to brush your pet’s teeth, and Oravet treats which help protect against tartar and bacteria buildup.
