Strawberry Low Tunnels
We’ve been busy the last few months getting the strawberries ready for opening day. We farm at natures pace and as much as we’d like to speed things up the plants decide when they’re ready. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we eagerly anticipate buckets of big red strawberries. We are getting closer but still not quite ready. We will be in the field to clean up again this week and we will post another update. See you soon.
Ok. We jumped the gun. We looked at tomorrow’s forecast and Harvey decided the grapes can wait a few days until the temps are below 100😳. We will post an update early next week. We are close just hoping for a more enjoyable opening day.
It’s time for grapes. We will open Saturday morning 8/26 at 9:00 for pick-your-own certified organic muscadine grapes. See you in the field.
Friday looks like it may start off damp but we are going to give it a try. We will open for pick your own blueberries at 10 am tomorrow morning. We hope things are dry enough to have some pre-picked berries around lunchtime. Please call Harvey to check availability of pre-picked blueberries tomorrow. We are expecting a big day Saturday for pre-picked and pick-your-own blueberries
In other news from Olde Carthage Farm we used the rainy weather to jar some honey we took last week. We have a good amount of honey from our bees this year but it will not last long. See you in the field.
Good Morning. I’ve had several questions about how the strawberries survived the rainy weather. The low tunnels did their job and kept the berries dry and safe. The tunnels not only prevent soft berries but more importantly to our organic approach the covers keep the plants dry. Dry plants allow us to raise strawberries without using fungicides and other chemicals that some growers use to prevent mold and fungal diseases. I spent several hours in the field yesterday pulling up the hoops to let the pollinators go back to work. Here’s a quick clip how we raise the tunnels.
We are open today for pick-your-own and pre-picked strawberries. Come see us.
It’s muscadine time. Our Nesbit muscadines are at their peak. Come pick some certified organic grapes. We are open from 8:30 to 4:00 Tuesday through Saturday.
Come chase butterflies with us or at least check your butterfly identification skills while picking flowers. We have the last of this summer‘s honey bottled and ready to go. We will be at the farm all week from 8:30 to 5:00 weather permitting. Come see us.
We have pick your own flowers and ice cream for the kiddos Come see us.
