I would like to tell you how my dog, Tico, changed my life to make it better.
I was born and mostly raised in Carthage , MO in 1945. My family moved back to Carthage when I started the 4th grade at Mark Twain. I had been bugging my Dad for several years that I wanted a dog. Finally he took me to the Carthage Humane Society the next year to find a dog. The Carthage Humane Society looked quite different then. It had one building and a big fenced in yard where the dogs were. When we got there, there were a lot of dogs to choose from. My eyes kept going back to a quiet dog setting in the corner. Most of the other dogs came to the fence where we were standing. I wanted the dog in the corner. My dad tried to talk me into picking another dog but I wouldn’t have it! Tico was black and brown with long hair a little bigger than a daushound.Anyway, we took him home and it was love at first sight. I was an only child and he was my best friend. I had a wonderful childhood with him. He went everywhere with me except school. At that time,
a dog did not have to be on a leash. They could run around the neighborhood on their own. Everybody knew Tico.
I graduated from high school in 1963 and went away to college a year later. Tico stayed home with Mom and & Dad . He passed away a year later. My life would have been so different if he hadn’t been in it.
Please go to the Carthage Humane Society and look for a dog or cat. There are so many wonderful animals out there. Like they say, Adopt Love.
I have been on the Carthage Humane Society Board for several years. We are going thru some lean times right now but I assure you, if you go out there and adopt, you will not be sorry. I would put Carthage Humane Society up against any other. The animals there are WELL taken care of.

Hi there! I’m Reggie. I’m a happy, friendly, fun-loving Heeler mix just searching for a home and family to call my own. I hope maybe you're looking for me now too, and that we can be a family soon. I have tons of great potential. Sure, I'm a young heeler mix, I can get excited and have lots of energy. But I'm also SUPER loving & smart too. If you praise me when I am good, I’ll quickly learn what you expect from me. I already know sit, down, shake, and spin! We could go for walks and explore together, play with toys (I love playing fetch!), then at the end of the day, we could cuddle up on the couch and relax together! I’m still very much puppy-like and need to work on all those fun things like manners, not jumping up on people or pulling on the leash so much, but I promise you I’m worth it and I think you’ll find me easy to train! I love treats and learning new things. I’d make a great hiking, running, or creek buddy! Does it sound like we might be a good fit for each other? I really hope so! I am so ready to start making memories with you! I can't wait for the years of fun we will have!

Do you know us? We are currently on stray hold at the Carthage Humane Society. If these are your pets, please call the shelter at 417-358-6402. Proof of ownership will be required! You will need to identify what their genders are, if they have been spayed/neutered, what names they respond to, if they know any tricks, and if you have pictures of them or vet records, that’s even better!

Remi’s story is heartbreaking—she was left behind when her owner moved, along with her pregnant sister. Thankfully, both are safe with us now, and her sister has since given birth to six healthy baby boys! 💕
It’s hard to believe anyone could abandon a dog with a soul as sweet as Remi’s. This gorgeous girl has a heart as big as her paws and is ready to give all her love to the right family. Jarred has been with us for 425 days today. Jarred is so smart and so sweet, not too big, but not too small. He loves to play with toys, he will bring you his stuffie over and over again so you can throw it for him, he loves meeting new people and going on walks too! Unfortunately for Jarred, he has a black coat, and he does not get along with other dogs, black dogs are notoriously harder to adopt out in a shelter environment, even more so when they need to be an only dog, they often get looked over, this has definitely been the case for poor Jarred. He has a wonderful, happy demeanor, and he just enjoys being in your company. I hate to see him wasting his days here at the shelter, when he could be frolicking around, playing fetch with a family of his own. Please consider giving Jarred a chance, or even just coming to meet this distinguished little gentleman, he doesn't often get to have meet and greets and I'm sure some extra attention would do him some good.

Poor Clyde has been here 422 days. He has been here longer than almost any other animal in our shelter. Clyde is a 3 year old American Bulldog mix. We have had almost 0 interest in him during his entire stay here, I have no idea why, he is good with other dogs, good with kids, and knows several commands! Please please please come out and meet this handsome guy, he deserves to live a happy, content life, far far away from here.

SOS we desperately need puppy fosters, we have received several litters over the past 2 weeks and we hate watching these little ones grow up here at the shelter. These puppies are not yet spayed/neutered so we cannot adopt them out quite yet. But, we need people who can help teach them some manners and basic socialization skills while they are at that perfect age to absorb any and all new information about their world! Please contact the shelter asap if you think you can help, this would be approximately a 6-8 week commitment. We prefer them to go in pairs, we have a total of 22 babies needing foster homes at this time. Contact the shelter at 417-358-6402

This is Curry he is at the Carthage Humane Society!! He really is perfect. Rides perfect in a vehicle. Just sets back there and looks around. Gets along with most all dogs. And people. We aren’t sure about younger kids though . He's the sweetest boy. And he's been at the shelter far too long!!! Please if you can't adopt him. MAYBE FOSTER HIM FOR CHRISTMAS FOR A FEW DAYS !!!
