💉 COLIC FACTS - With sudden weather changes, we see an increase in colic cases. Read below for more info!

1. What is colic? Colic is a broad term that means abdominal pain. This could be anything related to the gastrointestinal tract or other things that cause colic symptoms.

2. What causes colic? Short answer=we don’t know. The long answer is, numerous factors including diet, stress, exercise, water intake, concurrent diseases, etc.

3. How do you treat colic? A physical exam is performed to assess vital parameters to aid in determining the severity of the colic. Further diagnostics are used such as blood work, re**al palpation, abdominal ultrasound & more. Majority of colics resolve with medical management only (oral/IV fluids) & no surgical intervention is necessary. They receive NSAIDs, sedatives & other meds based off our findings.

4. He finally pooped, now is he okay? Short answer=no. Many times the manure passed during a colic episode is already past the problem area in the GI tract. It’s important to talk to your veterinarian before feeding horses with colic symptoms even if they passed a pile of manure.

5. If they lay down & roll, will they twist their gut? Short answer=no. It is okay to let them lay down & rest. Walking can be helpful to distract from current discomfort and stimulate GI motility. They rarely will twist or displace a section of intestine by rolling on the ground. But if they are excessively painful, up/down constantly, thrashing, etc. they need to seek medical attention ASAP!

6. What is Banamine? Banamine is the trade name for the medicine flunixin meglumine. Other names are Vetameg, Prevail, & Flunazine. *These meds should NEVER be given intramuscular (in the muscle) despite them being labeled to do so* They should only be given intravenously (in the vein) or they can be safely given ORALLY!

7. EVERY colicking horse can be safely hauled in a horse trailer! Clients are commonly concerned to haul for fear they “might go down in the trailer”. If your horse is painful enough to lay down in a trailer, then it will require more medical attention than a field call! Haul to our hospital ASAP!

❄️ Winter will be here before we know it!

If you plan to travel for events, staying current on equine Coggins and dental care is important!

Proper dental care before winter is important to help horses make the most out of their feed and prevent weight loss, especially in elderly horses. Efficient digestive health starts with the teeth, because a horse must grind feed effectively to present it to the digestive tract for maximum nutrient absorption.

You can reach our clinic at 417-825-8387 to schedule a dental an equine wellness appointment!

As a friendly reminder, small animal annual exams and vaccinations can help ensure your pet is healthy and has disease protection. Annual preventive care also helps with early disease detection. Dr. Smith has seen heartworm and ehrlichia (tick-borne illness) cases in dogs lately which are both preventable with flea/tick prevention medications.

Our online store can offer a convenient solution for making sure you have your pet's medications on time and that you don't run out!

❗Our clinic would like to give a friendly reminder to inspect your horse's hay for foxtails!

Foxtail seed heads contain spikes with barbs called "awns," which can lodge in horses' mouths and gums, or even scratch an eye. These awns can work their way through the tissue, causing lesions and infections.

When you inspect your horse’s mouth, you may see inflamed gums and ulcers.
Some signs that your horse may have consumes foxtails include:

✅ Trouble chewing
✅ Excessive salivation
✅ Odor from the mouth
✅ Foam around the lips
✅ Refusing to accept the bit

Mild cases may resolve themselves, but veterinary care may be needed. You can reach our clinic at (417) 825-8387 to schedule an appointment!
