Just like human babies, putting things in their mouth is an important way puppies explore the world. Those sharp puppy teeth, however, are not very finger friendly! Instead of yelling or hitting, which will only make pups fearful, try redirecting the behavior to an appropriate toy, and teach them bite inhibition by giving a good "Ouch!" and taking a break from playing for a few minutes to let them calm down. Check out this article from the AKC for more information and training tips.

Learn how to stop your puppy from chewing your hands with these tips from AKC's dog training experts.

Crate training is a crucial step in training puppies. Crating makes sure mischievous pups are safe while you sleep or are away from them. It also gets them ready for any trips they may have to take when they're older, or if they every need to stay in a hospital. Every pup should be crate trained. Check out this article from the AKC to make the process easier.

Crate training creates a safe environment for your dog that teaches them responsibility and independence. Here's how to easily crate train your dog.

It's really amazing when we deliver puppies, and it's the icing on the cake when they come back to see us for their preventative care appointments. This little Clumber Spaniel is the cutest little baby I've seen in a while, and he's oh so sweet!

These are radiographs of a dog that came in clinically normal, with crunchy skin like bubble wrap found on physical exam. There was no evidence of trauma (no puncture wounds, bruising, or abrasions). Radiographically he had a large amount of subcutaneous emphysema, or air trapped under the skin, indicated by the black areas between the green arrows. Subcutaneous emphysema can occur from trauma if the trachea, lungs, or esophagus are punctured. It can also occur after surgery from damage to the airways from endotracheal tubes (rare complication), or after some types of surgery because we are cutting through the skin or organs (usually minor and very localized). It can happen after some endodontic (dental) procedures if air blasts or hydrogen peroxide irriagation is used. Tumors that damage the airways can also cause this, although it is a rare occurrence. Ultimately we were unable to determine the cause of this dog's emphysema, and that is called idiopathic subcutaneous emphysema (no medical reason can be found for the condition). He was treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and cage rest and after about 3 weeks he was back to himself with no long-term damage.

This week we're taking a look at radiographs of a 9-year-old male neutered American Bulldog mix. There's been no known trauma, and the dog is acting normally at home, with normal appetite and energy level. I'll not give physical exam findings away, as it would give it away. Can you tell me what's going on in these radiographs? We'll discuss the answer tomorrow!

Christmas is a great time to get a new puppy! However, they take a lot of work to integrate into the family and then train. While it may be tempting to make your older pet a puppy-sitter, they can get tired of this role. Some dogs need more space, and a puppy will not know to go easy on older dogs with arthritis or chronic pain. The AKC has some tips in this article to help integrate the new pup into your household. Check out the link below!

Bringing home a puppy when you have an older dog can be a lot of fun, but it can also bring about challenges. A puppy can inspire an older dog to be...
