Hey Homestead Peeps, we were discussing taking the side yard and putting in a dock diving pool to be utilized for training, water play and therapy. Would this be something folks would be interested in? If so what length would be recommended? We've investigated the competition lengths required by NADD, but there may not be enough space for that, not without taking up the entire yard. Is there a smaller size that would work well for practice without being regulation? Also, same question for the dock. If there is anyone who has intimate knowledge of the sport feel free to contact us. We're just gathering information right now. We still need to check with the town of Cary and check on insurance as well. Any information, as well as shows of interest, would be much appreciated!

Thanks for any assistance our clients and followers can provide!

This spring with the cicadas, the risk for snake bites are increased for our pets. Would you know how to spot a snake bite? Or what to do? Check out this article from Texas A&M.

Spring has sprung, but flowers may not be the only things popping up in your yard; this also is the season when snakes come out of hibernation. There are

If your pup seems to have taken a step backward in its training around 6-12 months of age, you're not wrong! Your pup has entered adolescence, and the areas of the brain that control behavior and attention are undergoing some major changes. This article talks about some of the changes we can expect and how we can shape our pets into good doggy citizen adults. Check it out!

Brian and I are in the midst of moving to a new house, so we’re revisiting a past blog article all about what sorts of behavioral changes to expect during the Early Adolescent stage in dogs (~6-12 months of age).

The costs of veterinary care have steadily increased since the pandemic, largely due to the sharp increase in the costs of medical supplies and medications, which are passed onto the consumer. Some things you may want to consider if cost is an issue include pet insurance (be sure to sign up before you need it!), Care Credit or Scratch Pay (both of which we accept), and making sure to keep up with preventative care (an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, after all!).

Veterinary care in cities has risen by 11% in the last two years and 60% since 2014. A recent poll shows vet bills have stressed 91% of pet owners.

Summer is nearly upon us, and we're going to see a rise in the number of ticks we see on our pets. Ticks can carry a number of diseases, including Lyme disease. Would you be able to spot the signs of Lyme disease in dogs? Check out this article from the American Veterinary Medical Association for more information on the disease. And if you're interested in vaccinating your pet, we carry the vaccine here at Homestead!

Transmitted through tick bites, Lyme disease can be hard to detect and cause serious, recurring health issues. It's best to prevent it by preventing tick bites.

We tend to lose our hearing as our age due to damage to the sensory cells in our ears, and the same thing can happen to our pets as they age. Losing hearing isn't painful, but it does require some changes to how we manage our pets. Check out this article where the writer describes changes she made when her own two elderly pets began losing their hearing.

Insects are a great source of protein and are less expensive to produce than other sources of protein. In many countries in other parts of the world people eat them on a daily basis. Have you tried insects? Would you feed a diet including insects to your pet? I'd eat products containing insects, but I'd draw the line at eating them whole (it's the ick factor for me), and I'd feed a food containing insects to my pet. What are your thoughts?

Researchers at the University of California, Davis want to interview cat owners about the growing trend of insect-based pet food.

At Homestead, we're in the process of planting a native, pollinator and butterfly friendly landscape. We're choosing our plants not only for their pretty flowers and berries, but are also hoping that some little caterpillars will come and munch on them! Whenever your visit, feel free to walk the grounds and see what we've done in the garden. Most evenings you'll probably bump into Dr. Adams if things are slow; one of his guilty pleasures is walking the grounds and seeing what's popping up or blooming in the garden.
