The Health Clinic is 2 days away, and we've sent out emails to those already registered with your time slots. If you have already registered and not received a time slot, please call the hospital today! Please plan to arrive 15-20 minutes prior to your appointment to complete all necessary paperwork. Costs include all testing and exams. It usually takes a few weeks to a month to appear in the OFA database after forms are submitted; you will not receive results directly from the hospital. Don't forget that Raleigh Pet Photography will be here to capture memories of your dogs! Sessions are 15 minutes and are first come, first served. If you haven't registered but would like to have your dog seen, please call the hospital at 919-535-9955.

How often are you washing your pet's food and water bowls? Daily? Or are you feeding a few meals before giving them a scrub? We know the importance of washing our plates and bowls to prevent getting sick, but our pets may be at higher risk. Pets can be very messy eaters, leaving behind food particles and saliva, along with a good sampling of the bacteria that thrive in their mouths. The moistened food particles along with that bacteria can create a biofilm, which in the mouth leads to plaque and tartar build-up. But on their food dish, it creates a film that's no so easily washed away where bacteria thrive. This can lead to illness in our pets, and some bacteria, like E. coli and Salmonella, can cause severe disease in people, too. Having two sets of water and food bowls is ideal so they can be cleaned daily and run through the dishwasher, which is better at sanitizing dishes than hand-washing alone. Keeping the food bowls clean and sanitized can help ensure healthier pets, and protect our health, too.

Just like human babies, putting things in their mouth is an important way puppies explore the world. Those sharp puppy teeth, however, are not very finger friendly! Instead of yelling or hitting, which will only make pups fearful, try redirecting the behavior to an appropriate toy, and teach them bite inhibition by giving a good "Ouch!" and taking a break from playing for a few minutes to let them calm down. Check out this article from the AKC for more information and training tips.
