Today is going to be another cooker but let’s avoid hot dogs. Heat stroke happens fast and is no joke!

Keep your pets in cool areas with access to fresh water. Don’t leave your pets in vehicles. Avoid exercising them during the hottest parts of the day.

If your dog shows signs of heat stroke such as excessive panting, drooling, or staggering:

1. Move the dog to a well-ventilated, cool area.
2. Spray or sponge the dog with room temp or cool (not cold) water, especially on the underside. Don’t immerse the animal in cold water or use ice.
3. Use a fan to blow cool air on them, if available.
4. Call us or your nearest veterinarian immediately, your pet will need treatment.

It’s lost pet prevention month! Call us to schedule an appointment for your pet’s microchip. A one time fee with lifetime registration and guarantee.

Thousands of pets are separated from their owners each year, and sadly, only a fraction will find their way home. Pet owners can take some steps to prevent their pets from getting lost and increase their chances of finding their furry friend should the unthinkable occur.

• Microchip pets and keep the contact information up to date
• Use ID tags
• Regularly check fencing around the yard to ensure no escape routes
• Use a leash when walking the dog
• If traveling with a pet, keep them secured in a carrier or use a pet seat belt

Share these tips with your clients to help keep pets safe and home where they belong.

Did you know that in just seven years, a pair of cats with their offspring could produce 400,000 kittens? The average size of a litter is 3-5 kittens and a cat can have three litters in a year!

The shelters are overrun with kittens right now. Let’s help control the cat population by spaying and neutering. 😸

Spring is here! Or is it? The recent weather may have us a bit confused. ❄️ But we don’t want you to be confused about common toxins in the garden. Be sure to check if the plants in your yard are pet friendly. If you’re concerned your pet may have ingested something poisonous, call the Pet Poison hotline at (800) 213-6680.

Baby season is finally here in McCall! Here is a gentle reminder that if you stumble across what appears to be an orphaned baby, please give us a call first before intervening. Mom is always the best caretaker, so we always try and reunite or leave the babies alone when possible (if mom is close by). Keep your eyes on the ground for babies that might have fallen out of the nest, too. Here are some tips if you are unsure if a baby has been abandoned:

For baby birds and raptors: If they don’t have feathers or are still very fuzzy, this means that they are a nestling and cannot survive without mom. If you find a nestling on the ground, using a Tupperware container or a wicker basket with leaves/foliage as bedding can make for a wonderful temporary nest. Put a warm (not hot) water bottle or rice bag under a towel near babies. Hang the container or basket as close to the original nest as possible and monitor to see if mom comes back. If she doesn’t, then call your local rehabber.

For fawns: Mom often leaves her baby or babies in the grass alone while she forages, but she is always close by. However, if you find a fawn with a heavy tick load around its face, eyes, and ears, that might mean that mom hasn’t come back to clean the ticks off. You can also observe their body condition. If the fawn looks weak or has poor body condition, mom most likely has not come back. Mom will also move her babies every 12 hours or so, so if you notice a fawn has been in one place for over 24 hours, then call your local rehabber.

Squirrels: Sometimes squirrels will fall out of the nest. When this happens, carefully assess the baby for injuries or bruising. If you find anything, call your local rehabber. However, if the baby seems healthy and warm, you can do the same method as you would with baby birds.

Cottontails and hares: These guys are diurnal which means mom only comes back to feed her babies during dawn and dusk. If you are unsure if mom is coming back, place a camera or a tic-tac-toe pattern of twigs over the nest and if it has been disturbed, that means mom came back.

**Another helpful tip: NEVER attempt to move a nest to a different location.

Surgery can be a scary time for you and your pet, we understand. That’s why we put together these helpful tips for dogs and cats prior to surgery to set them up for success!

1. Do NOT feed your pet after midnight the night before their surgery. (If they do eat before surgery, please let us know so we can administer the proper medications.) 🦴

2. Allow your pet plenty of water, do not withhold. 🚰

3. Bathe your pet two days before their surgery (not the morning of, they should be dry for surgery). Consider washing their bedding as well so it is clean during their recovery time. 🛁

4. Walk your pet before dropping them off at the vet clinic and ensure they go to the bathroom - especially number two! 💩

5. Use a calming pheromone spray or collar to help your pet relax on the car ride and during their time at the vet clinic. 💦

6. Train your pet to wear their e-collar (aka the Cone of Shame) or recovery suit prior to surgery so they are accustomed to having it on. 🤓 (Placing the e-collar or body suit on a pet after surgery when they have never worn it before often scares and confuses the pet.)

- To train them: start by placing the e-collar or body suit on your pet for short periods of time (maybe just a few seconds at first) and offer them lots of treats to encourage them to accept it. Continue to work on this in multiple, short sessions to slowly build up your pet’s tolerance to the e-collar or body suit until they are comfortable wearing it and moving around in it.

- Don’t forget to bring the e-collar or body suit with you on the day of your pet’s surgery!

7. Please accept pre-anesthetic blood testing to ensure your pet is healthy enough to undergo anesthesia. 🩺
