Mountain Trail is one of the fastest-growing disciplines in the horse world. Whether you would like to compete or be a better partner with your horse on the trail, this course can help. The work that you will do with your horse during this 3-day course will create the groundwork for a safe and sane mount out on the trail. There will be over 30 obstacles that we will work on along with arena work to achieve a basic foundation. From beginner trail to advanced trail, there is something for everyone.

The course will begin in the classroom to explain the training methodology and then you’re off to get your horse in hand with just a halter. You will work on the basic groundwork that will teach your horse to move on the haunch, shoulder, forward, back, and laterally. Next, you will work through the basics of moving through cabalettas and simple obstacles while driving your horse in hand. After lunch, the group will move onto the trail course to work on the teeter-totter,
bridges, water, logs, and more. Day 2 will be under the saddle. Trail
obstacles will be ridden after they have been accomplished in hand.
Day 3 will be spent on the trail course and then out on a trail ride that has
real-world obstacles to test your new skills.

Each course will be limited to 10 students and taught by 2 instructors,
ensuring lots of hands-on attention. Chris Jonason has 35 years of horse
experience and apprenticed with Mark Bolender for 2 years and she was his
first certified apprentice. Chris gleans from both her extensive back-country
experience as well as Mark’s teachings. She presents an easy step-by-step
the methodology that will help you and your equine friend attain your goals.
Chris was an outfitter and farrier for over 35 years with vast experience in
the mountains. Horse and rider will be taught as individuals with consideration
for their own goals and desires.

5 Day riding with connection clinic
Rendezvous Ranch is located in Cashmere Washington. Take advantage of our senior discount of 10% off.

What does riding with a feel and connection mean to you and your horse? How can you improve this language between the two of you? This course is designed to give you a deeper understanding of what effective communication between your artificial and natural aids means to your horse. Understanding, pressure and release and the amount needed for each cue will help in your ability to achieve a higher awareness of what it takes to dance with your horse. By understanding more deeply these aids you will build more confidence and become empowered through a deeper understanding of the art of riding. This will be achieved by doing groundwork with feel which will be put to practice on our trail course as well as riding with feel also on the trail course. Then you will be introduced to classical riding in the arena in groups of 2 with Leigh. This will give you a deeper look into the old methods of achieving connection that has been used for centuries to achieve communication through lightness. There will be 2 days of lessons. The last 2 days will put your new skills to practice doing our Working equitation course for the last 2 days. This will challenge you to put purpose into your riding while trying to do specific tasks through obstacles with grace and ease. The last half of the last day will be a competition to see how far you have come with your skills and will be judged.

This course will be taught by Leigh Cochran and Chris Jonason who together have over 70 years of real-world experience training and teaching making this an amazing opportunity to become empowered through education.

Riding through fear
Riding through fear

This clinic is designed for anyone who struggles with fear or anxiety in their relationship with their horse. It is for those who are aware that they are having difficulty progressing toward their riding goals and may feel ashamed to admit they are afraid. It speaks to individuals who aren’t sure where their anxiety is coming from, have been shamed for experiencing these feelings, or haven’t received the support they need to work through them.

Addressing fear among riders has traditionally been the domain of trainers and coaches. The challenge with this model is that fear, anxiety, and trauma are the domain of trained and experienced behavioral health professionals. We are beginning to recognize the importance of psychology—the rider’s and the horse’s so a collaborative approach is necessary.

All of this is complicated by the nature of the horse. Horses are prey animals with exquisitely attuned protective instincts. Fear and the ability to react faster than we can think have kept them alive for thousands of years. And, to complicate matters, horses and humans are afraid of different things! This often leads to a confusing cascade of anxiety without context or solution.

The Riding Through Fear Clinic is a journey designed to provide participants with multiple learning opportunities, both in and out of the saddle, to be used to slowly and successfully work through the experience of fear. This clinic is an invitation to a unique experience with your mind, your body, and, of course, your equine partner!

Clinic Activities are a Robust Combination of Under Saddle & Groundwork:

• Every morning will begin with a yoga class and meditation, both on and off our horses.
Please bring a yoga mat and an exercise ball.

• We will study the pelvis and the ischial tuberosity (sitz bones) and develop our connection to them to truly develop a seat, which is the most important aid for riding in lightness.

• Mountain Trail Obstacles will provide the perfect situation to experiment with fear and resolution.

• Attendees will gain an academic and experiential understanding of the psychology and physiology of fear and anxiety in humans and horses, as well as how negative spirals between horse and rider occur.

• Body awareness, mindfulness, breathwork, and visualization will be explored to better self-regulate and de-escalate when fear or anxiety arises.

• Facilitated group discussions will foster a sense of shared experience and mutual support.

• Journaling and self-reflection will be encouraged throughout the clinic.

Day 3:

• Individual 1 hour session with Deborah with each horse-rider pair. We can build upon something addressed in the clinic or an issue that might benefit from privacy & confidentiality.

• Chris Jonason, owner of Rendezvous Ranch, consummate horsewoman, and expert Mountain Trail coach, will offer small group instruction on the Mountain Trail obstacles throughout the day while private sessions take place.

The clinic will be limited to eight participants to ensure maximum individual attention.
