Rex meeting his new sister, Sophie, for the first time! We are so happy for Rex and proud of him. We have been working with Rex on correcting his reactivity and socialization for almost a year. He has come such a long way and showed no issue with his sis. We are confident that they will be friends in no time!!

Our service dogs have had an exciting week of outings! Kodi helped me navigate Walmart and waited patiently at Verizon. Briscoe worked hard on his obedience so he can start going out into the world as a well-behaved gentleman. Dax! had adventures at Walmart and the UPS Store. While Pancake behaved in tight spaces at Eggingtons working on her touch! While some weren't perfect, they all did wonderful!! #

Good bye 2024!! Hello 2025!! Today not only marks a new year for us but our 1st year in business! we opened our doors to the public on 01/01/2024. From working dogs to serivce dogs to pet dogs, we love all our furry friends and their human counterparts! Thank you to our community for embracing us and trusting us with your BFFs! From big scary dogs to cute little ones, we have had a blast training them all! We are looking forward to 2025 and what our 2nd year will bring! Expect big things!!

When Santa Paws is looking at gifts for the fur good little girls and boys, please remember raw hides are dangerous for them. They may seem like a great and entertaining treat but they have many down falls. Here are a few good reasons.

Choking: When your pup is chewing on raw hides they become soft and slimy. This makes it very difficult if your dog starts choking to retrieve the raw hide.
Digestion: When in the stomach rawhide can double in size making it hard for the dog to fully digest the treat!

When thinking of Christmas present there are a few things to remember a puppy is a great gift but also a commitment for the receiver. Please make sure that if a puppy is a gift that the new owner has the want, desire and ability to take on that commitment and responsibilities. We can always help train and correct behaviors, we cannot create or train commitment and responsibilities in the human!

Fun Fact Friday!! We understand that a Service Canine is a large investment for clients, but it can be a LIFE CHANING investment for most. While most insurance will not cover the purchase of a Service Canine, most Flex Spending Accounts or HSA will cover the expense. Also, you can write off the dog and its expense on your taxes!

An owner is allowed to deduct all the expenses that come with purchasing a service dog from their taxes in the year they purchase their dog. But the limit to deductions does not stop there. All the expenses associated with caring for a service dog should be considered tax-free as well.

This includes but is not limited to:

– Writing off any taxes incurred on the dog’s vet visits
– Emergency or general bills
– The dog’s medical expenses, like shots

Additionally, the dog’s owner is not liable for the taxes of the animal’s food or any training or retraining that the service animal requires while it serves them.

If an owner requires any equipment, like tools or accessories to help the dog do its job those are eligible for a write off as well. Harnesses, tags, and garments that signify an animal is a service dog are all eligible.

Having those items is not a requirement anywhere in the ADA’s legislation regarding service animals. Ultimately, the ADA and IRS worked together to create this protection for service animal owners so that they can use their service animal however helps them the most.
