If you decide to bring your dog around me, here are some things you should know:

1. I might say hi to you.

2. I will ABSOLUTELY say hi to your dog.

3. I will talk in a weird, high, squeaky voice—possibly an oddly low voice if it’s a big dog. I’ll just use whatever voice I think Your dog will best understand, okay?

4. I will try not to ignore you completely, but I make no promises. I only have so much energy to give, and a large part of it is gonna go to your pet.

5. I will ask your dog if it wants to come home with me at least once. I have three kids and two dogs of my own, I promise, I have no intentions of stealing your beloved pooch. It’s just something I am obliged to ask.

6. If I say I love You, ignore me. I’m not talking to you, I’m talking to your dog.

Fourth of July is right around the corner! This day is a time for backyard barbecues, pool parties -- and fireworks. Though you might love the pyrotechnics, your dog may not. According to the American Kennel Club, a large number of pets run away during the holiday every year. Now is the time to plan ahead to make sure your pooch is safe- here are a few tips to help:

1. Think twice before taking your dog out.
The social atmosphere and warm weather might tempt you to take your dog out to see the fireworks show, but it can take years of desensitization and positive reinforcement to make a dog relaxed around fireworks. A seemingly calm dog may suddenly get startled and bolt

2. Create a safe area.
Keep the curtains closed and bring your dog to a part of the house without windows or glass doors, like the basement or even a closet. Keep the lights low -- or off -- and fill the space with a dog bed and his favorite blanket and toys. A dog might even prefer a crate or kennel during the fireworks. If you can, stay home with them during the light show or find someone the dog knows and trusts to be with them.

3. Drown out the sound with music or white noise.
Leave the TV or radio on high volume or run the air conditioner or fan to help cover up the booming fireworks.

4. Take them for a walk well before the fireworks start.
A trip to the dog park well before sunset can help ensure your pooch won't have to heed nature's call during the fireworks. It can also help work off excess energy and relax them for the evening -- as will extra intense playtime during the day.

5. Try a Thundershirt or anxiety wrap.
Human babies are calmer when swaddled in a blanket and fur babies are the same way. Swaddling a dog with a blanket can be difficult, though, so you might want to try a ThunderShirt or other weighted vest to help calm an anxious dog.

6. Talk to your veterinarian about medication.
If your pet's anxiety is severe, talk to your vet NOW about giving them medication. You definitely don't want to wait for the first loud noise to give your dog medication.

For the safety of your pet, yourself, and others, always keep your dog leashed in public spaces not specifically designated for off-leash animals.

Our faces when... we see another dog walking off leash. 😑

Contact our Castle Rock Police Department directly to have the most immediate assistance. Our Animal Control Unit can be reached daily (holidays excluded) from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. by calling 720-733-6063. Outside of these hours, please contact our dispatch center at 303-663-6100. It is helpful if you call WHEN the violation is taking place so they can immediately respond.

With springtime just around the corner, the Castle Rock Police Department, Animal Control Unit and police therapy dog Ru want to provide you with some friendly reminders about the Town’s leash laws! When it comes to leashes, the Town’s Municipal Code states the leash, cord or chain cannot be more than ten (10) feet in length and must be held by a person of sufficient age, size and physical ability to restrain the animal. Electric leashes are specifically prohibited.

The only places pets can be off leash within the Town of Castle Rock are on your personal property and dog parks. If you are walking your dog on trails, open spaces, parks, etc., they MUST be on leash.

We get it – you may have a friendly dog that listens to commands, but that’s not the case for everyone. For the safety of other humans, pets, working dogs and wildlife, please leash up your pet. To report a violation, it’s helpful if you call CRPD's Animal Control Unit or dispatch center WHEN the violation is taking place at a specific location. Happy walking, Castle Rock!
