“The Scout’s Honor”

Style: Whiskey Sour Twist (smooth, balanced, and confident — like Scout)

Ingredients

2 oz bourbon whiskey (preferably a smooth, caramel-forward one like Woodford Reserve or Buffalo Trace)
¾ oz fresh lemon juice
½ oz local honey syrup (1:1 honey and warm water)
¼ oz ginger liqueur (or muddle a few thin slices of fresh ginger)
1 dash orange bitters

Optional: Egg white for foam (if you want that silky texture)

Garnish
Lemon wheel and a sprig of fresh mint

Optional: A small drizzle of honey across the top for a touch of gold

Instructions

Add whiskey, lemon juice, honey syrup, ginger liqueur, and bitters to a shaker.
If using egg white, dry shake (no ice) first to froth.
Add ice and shake again until the mixture is well chilled.
Strain into a chilled coupe or over ice in a rocks glass.

🐴 Meet Tom-Tom & Molly! 🐴

We’ve been helping a neighbor find a home for their two sweet donkeys, a jack named Tom-Tom (17) and a Jenny named Molly (20). These two haven’t seen a vet or farrier in quite some time, so we’ve been working with our incredible team to get them caught up on care.

As you can imagine, their hooves were in rough shape, but you know you’ve got a great farrier when she tracks through an overgrown field and gets right down on the ground to help! 💪

Tom-Tom wasn’t exactly thrilled about his pedicure (it took all four of us to convince him!), but thanks to Jessica, our amazing farrier, both he and Molly are already feeling so much better.

We’ll keep everyone posted as these two continue their journey back to good health, and hopefully, to a new forever home together. ❤️🐾

🐴 The One-Eyed W***y

A smoky, smooth cocktail with a hint of rebellion.

Ingredients:

2 oz smoky bourbon or rye whiskey (swap for spiced rum)
½ oz amaretto
½ oz fresh lime juice
1 oz pineapple juice
Dash of Angostura bitters
Garnish: lime wheel + maraschino cherry (“the eye”)

Instructions:

Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice.
Shake well—think of W***y charging down the pasture.
Strain into a lowball glass over fresh ice.
Garnish with the lime and cherry “eye.”

Tasting Notes:
Rich oak and caramel from the whiskey balance the tropical pineapple and citrus, with the amaretto adding a smooth nuttiness. It’s grounded, bold, and cheeky—just like your one-eyed pony.

🚨 EMERGENCY ALERT: THE PUMPKIN PATROL IS HUNGRY! 🚨

Don't let those gorgeous gourds meet a sad end in the trash!

Here at Freedom and Whiskey Equine Rescue, our 501(c)(3) family is full of happy horses, but we also have a very serious, pumpkin-obsessed contingent: the goats and pigs!

For them, October isn't just a month, it's the annual All-You-Can-Eat Pumpkin Buffet. They've been counting the seconds since last November! Their favorite things are unpainted, mold-free pumpkins. You could say they're gourd-mands. 🐷🐐

If you have a leftover pumpkin you'd like to donate to our extremely demanding (but adorable) residents, please text 703-407-6265 to arrange a drop-off. You'll be making goat and pigs very happy this season!

🌾🐴 Hooves & Hops Farm Tour Recap 🐴🌾

The Hooves & Hops Farm Tour was a wonderful success! 💛 We want to thank everyone who came out to visit Freedom and Whiskey Equine Rescue, tour our facility, and meet our rescue horses, donkeys, and ponies. Your support means so much to us and to the animals who call our rescue home.

A very special thank you goes out to our incredible volunteers, Bubba, Rae, Josh, Ashley, Graylyn, Jen, and Samantha, who gave their time and energy to make the day run smoothly. We couldn’t do this without you!

With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of Dr. Jane Goodall (1944–2025), who died peacefully in her sleep while in the U.S. for her speaking tour.

Her life’s work transformed how the world sees chimpanzees, wildlife, and our shared planet. From launching the longest-running chimpanzee study in Gombe to founding the Jane Goodall Institute and its youth program Roots & Shoots, she inspired curiosity, hope, and compassion across generations.

At Freedom & Whiskey Equine Rescue, we deeply admire her courage and dedication. Her mission to give a voice to animals who cannot speak for themselves resonated with us.

Thank you, Dr. Goodall, for showing us how love, science, and activism can change the world.
