Welcome to 2026, the Year of the Horse. 🐎

In many traditions, the Year of the Horse represents strength, resilience, freedom, and forward movement. Horses are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and deep emotional awareness. They endure, they adapt, and when given care and trust, they thrive.

That feels especially meaningful to us.

Every horse, pony, and donkey at Freedom and Whiskey Equine Rescue carries a story. Some arrived scared or uncertain. Others came to us tired, neglected, or simply out of options. What they all share is heart, courage, and an incredible capacity to heal when given patience, consistency, and kindness.

As we step into the Year of the Horse, we are reminded why we do this work. To offer second chances. To restore dignity. To honor the quiet strength of these animals who ask for so little and give so much in return.

Thank you for being part of our journey. Your support, whether through donations, volunteering, sharing our posts, or simply cheering us on, is what allows these horses to move forward into safer, brighter futures.

We have been keeping a little secret, but it is time to let the cat out of the bag. 💛

Our beautiful girl Kiah received an incredibly generous training sponsorship, and today we loaded her up and took her to her new training barn. This is an amazing opportunity for her, and one we know she will absolutely excel in. We have entrusted her training and daily care to two outstanding individuals who truly have her best interests at heart. We are only about 20 minutes away and will be closely following every step of her progress.

Kiah is the kind of horse people dream about. She has the brains, the beauty, the talent, and that extra touch of fancy that makes her special. We cannot wait to watch her grow and see what the future holds for her.

That said, she is already deeply missed back at the barn. Her boyfriend Cash and her adopted filly Star have not stopped nickering for her or searching the paddock to see if she might come back. Their bond is real, and this adjustment is not easy for any of them, including us.

If you have a moment, please send some good thoughts to Cash and Star as they settle into this change, and to all of us as we miss our girl while cheering her on from just down the road. 💙

From our barn to your home, we want to wish you a very Merry Christmas filled with warmth, peace, and joy. On behalf of every horse, pony, and donkey who calls our rescue home, thank you for being part of our journey this year.

Because of your kindness and support, our animals are safe, well-fed, cared for, and surrounded by love this holiday season. Every full hay net, every warm stall, and every gentle nicker at feeding time is a reminder that none of this happens without you.

We are beyond grateful for our incredible community. You are truly part of our extended family, and we hope your Christmas is filled with the same comfort and happiness you give to the animals in our care every single day.

Do you want to know what entertains two dogs and one pony on a sunny, crisp winter day? THIS!!

Star's favorite game is to tease the dogs and run around so they will bark at her. Then she goes and stands near the fence to taunt them. ❤️

All the stockings are hung, and Kiah made sure hers is front and center. ❤️

Our beautiful Friesian mare is ready for Christmas, and so are all of the horses, ponies, and donkeys at Freedom and Whiskey Equine Rescue. As we head into the final days of the year, their biggest wish is simple. Continued care, full bellies, warm blankets, and the chance to feel safe and loved every single day.

This is our last donation push of the year, and we want to say thank you first. Truly. Every bit of support you have given in 2025 has kept these animals fed, sheltered, rehabilitated, and loved. It has meant more than we can ever put into words.

Meet Gus’s Snow Day Sipper

On a cold, snowy day, our little Gus is usually the first one kicking up powder, causing trouble, and looking far too cute to ever be blamed for any of it. So we created a drink in his honor, something warm and sweet with just enough mischief to make you smile. This cozy winter cocktail brings together the spirit of Freedom & Whiskey with the playful heart of our little Gus. Don't worry we won't let Gus have any, after all he's only 2!!

Flavor profile
Warm. Sweet. Slightly chaotic, but in a charming way. Think of it as a cross between a hot toddy and a winter dessert, with a mischievous surprise finish.

Ingredients

1.5 oz whiskey
0.5 oz maple syrup
0.5 oz vanilla liqueur or vanilla syrup (for an alcohol-lighter option)
4 oz hot apple cider
1 small cinnamon stick

Whipped cream for garnish
Dash of cinnamon or nutmeg on top
Optional, for Gus-level cheekiness: a tiny caramel drizzle or a mini marshmallow donkey ear

Instructions

Warm the apple cider in a small pot until steaming.
Add whiskey, maple syrup, and vanilla to a mug.
Pour the hot cider over the mixture and stir with the cinnamon stick.
Top with whipped cream.
Finish with a sprinkle of cinnamon and the cheeky garnish of your choice.

This is W***y. He is approximately 30 years old. He was abandoned and left at auction with an injured eye, Cushing's disease, bad teeth, and hooves that had not been trimmed.

He deserves golden years filled with treats, soft shavings, and zero worries.

They don’t care that it’s almost December. They still expect breakfast, lunch, dinner, and 2 a.m. “I’m starving” whinnies. Drama queens, every last one of them. 😆
