Meet One Eyed W***y!
Welsh-Shetland Cross | ~30 Years Old | Sanctuary Resident
One Eyed W***y might be small in stature, but don’t let that fool you he’s one of the biggest personalities at Freedom and Whiskey Equine Rescue.
W***y came to us seven years ago after being purchased by a kill buyer. He was in rough shape underweight, neglected, and blind in one eye from a long-untreated injury. Once we got him safe and settled, we made the tough but necessary decision to remove the damaged eye. And that, it turns out, was the beginning of W***y’s transformation.
With the pain behind him and the love of a forever home, W***y came into his own. He went from withdrawn and wary to confident, happy, and surprisingly social especially with the kids who visit the rescue. Though he sometimes plays the role of cranky old man with the rest of the herd, he has a soft spot for gentle hands and tiny voices.
Now nearly 30, W***y spends his days ruling the pasture with his close-knit crew: Scout, Titan, and the ever-watchful donkeys. He has Cushings, which we manage with daily medication, but you’d never know it from how he trots out to graze or stakes out his favorite sunbathing spot.
W***y is a living reminder of the power of second chances and that spirit, not sight, is what makes a true king.

Rojo Update! It's been six months since Rojo found his forever home and we have a quick video to share of him! We got to see Rojo on our recent trip to Bushy Mountain Horsemanship two weekends ago. He and his pasture pal, Kermie, are in for some additional training. It was so nice to see him and you know I had to give him a kiss.
