The world of horse rescue can be divided into two vastly different approaches: small, discreet rescues working in anonymity and grand, high-profile bailouts dominating social media. Both claim to save horses but have vastly different impacts and ethics.

Mass bailouts depend on emotion and urgency, with social media saturated with tearful photos of horses supposedly in danger of being slaughtered. "Pay today, or else this horse ships tomorrow" is a call for immediate action that well-meaning donors rush to answer, often unaware of the complexities behind the scenes.

Most mass bailouts involve purchasing horses outright at kill pens, operations that acquire horses, often at auctions, with the intent to resell them to slaughterhouses for profit. Some of these facilities have found they can make more money by presenting themselves as rescuers and collecting inflated โ€œransomโ€ payments from the public. In reality, this model perpetuates the very cycle it claims to combat: the funds raised often go toward purchasing more horses that will eventually meet the same fate.

While some horses are genuinely saved, mass bailouts often lack the resources and infrastructure for long-term care. Horses are โ€œrescuedโ€ in large numbers but face uncertain futures. Many end up in overcrowded, underfunded rescues, placed in poorly vetted homes, or even sent back into the slaughter pipeline when their new owners realize they cannot afford their care. With little to no follow-up, many continue to suffer from neglect, injuries, and inadequate rehabilitation.

In contrast, small rescues like ๐…๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐๐จ๐ฆ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐–๐ก๐ข๐ฌ๐ค๐ž๐ฒ ๐„๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐œ๐ฎ๐ž work to intercept horses before they ever enter the slaughter pipeline. We donโ€™t rely on sensational, last-minute pleas for donations. Instead, we quietly accept owner surrenders, care for older, sick, and unadoptable horses, and assist in law enforcement seizures.

Our approach is deliberate and slow because every horse we take in represents a lifetime commitment. There are no viral emotional appealsโ€”just the daily, unglamorous work of feeding, grooming, cleaning, and providing medical care to horses that society has discarded. We welcome the 25-year-old one-eyed pony with Cushingโ€™s, the draft horse with chronic arthritis, and the neglected mare with missing teeth who requires soaked feed to survive. Many of these horses will never be rehomed, but they will receive consistent, ethical, and responsible care for the rest of their lives.

We understand that donating to a small rescue doesnโ€™t provide the instant gratification of seeing a horse โ€œrescuedโ€ from a kill pen in a dramatic fashion. But what your donation does do is prevent horses from ever ending up in those dire situations in the first place.

Every dollar you contribute goes directly toward veterinary care, feed, hoof maintenance, and providing a humane retirement for horses in need. Weโ€™re not just rescuing themโ€”weโ€™re ensuring they will never be at risk again.

This morning while feeding, an escape attempt was made and almost successful. The ever impatient One Eye W***y deftly unlatched the stall door and let himself out into the aisle. Subject: Urgent Action Needed: Hold Bruce Rotz Accountable for Violating NY Anti-Horse Slaughter Law

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Freedom and Whiskey Equine Rescue is calling on all of you to take immediate action to help protect our beloved equines. Recently, Animalsโ€™ Angels uncovered undeniable proof that large-scale kill buyer Bruce Rotz has violated New Yorkโ€™s newly enacted anti-horse slaughter law by transporting over 200 horses to slaughter in Canada through the Champlain border crossing between April and September 2024.

In December 2023, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation (A5109/S2163B) making it illegal to slaughter horses in the state or to transport them through New York if they are intended for slaughter. The law went into effect in April 2024, and violators face a $2,500 fine per horse transported. Rotz could now be facing fines totaling $500,000 or more, yet he continues his illegal activities unchecked.

We cannot allow these violations to go unanswered! The New York Attorney General and the NY Commissioner of Agriculture have been presented with this evidence, and we need YOUR help to ensure they take action.

Today, we caught sweet Gus having the time of his life playing with his ball! ๐ŸŽพ For those who remember, Gus used to love playing ball and tug-of-war with his best buddy, Rollo. Since Rollo's passing, Gus has been quiet and reserved, and we hadn't seen him play like this in a long time.

Seeing Gus rediscover his playful spirit warmed all of our hearts. ๐Ÿ’• It's a beautiful reminder of the resilience and joy these incredible animals can find, even after loss.

Well we are heartbroken and devastated to hear from the vet this morning that Rollo is in renal failure. Thereโ€™s nothing we can do any more, heโ€™s too far gone. The vet will be here in an hour to put him down. Enjoy this last video of Rollo, we offered him carrots and surprisingly he ate them despite not being interested in his breakfast. He is the goodest donkey and the handsomest donkey there ever was. We are giving him all the hugs and kisses while we wait. Thank you all for your love and support and kind words. Today is going to be a very hard day.

Rollo Update: Unfortunately this isnโ€™t a good update. Rollo is declining in health. The vet was out last night again to check on him and draw blood. This handsome donkey needs all the support you can muster. Please keep your thoughts, prayers, and donations for his care coming. We will have more info later once the blood work comes back. We are just crushed to see him declining this way without an answer as to why.

Tonightโ€™s update on Rollo is positive. He ate some dry sweet fed grain, a couple bites, but seemed interested in eating the sweet feed once I added a little warm water. Iโ€™m doing a lot of sitting on the floor in a stall, but if it makes him feel comfortable to eat, Iโ€™ll sit here as long as it takes.
