🔸 Did you know?

Keeping an older horse active will help them with mobility, overall health, and the ability to access other resources?

It may seem like your older horse wants to hang out and do nothing, but in some cases it’s best to keep your older horses at a low activity level rather than no activity at all!

Last weekend Dr. Easton and Cathrine traveled to Orlando, FL for the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) yearly conference! AAEP is a professional organization that focuses on equine veterinary medicine. Their mission is to improve the health and welfare of horses, and support the development of equine practitioners. All the veterinarians at Phoenix Equine are proud to be members of this fantastic organization!

This yearly conference is the number one place where many equine practitioners and colleagues can all gather to exchange ideas and learn about the most recent changes and updates in equine medicine. But, even at an important conference like this Dr. Easton and Catherine were able to still enjoy some fun! Dr. Easton got sorted into her very own Hogwarts House for equine practitioners. Can you guys guess which house Dr. Easton got sorted into?

🔸 There’s an old adage that states “practice makes perfect.”

So in that spirit, here are our vet techs practicing radiographs on some of our navicular patients! Accurate X-rays are always important, but especially when it comes to determining the severity of the disease, progress, preventing misdiagnosis, and determining an appropriate treatment plan for a horse with navicular disease.

Did your horse not shed out as well as usual this summer? Are you noticing a lack of muscling or top line? You may want to discuss testing for Cushing’s Disease!

As the weather starts to cool down, now is the perfect time to test your horse for Cushing’s if you have any suspicions. Although it can be tested for at any time of the year, fall and winter are the best times to test.

Cushing’s Disease is also called Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID). PPID affects hormone production of the hypothalamus and pituitary glands in the brain causing a decrease in dopamine levels and in turn an increase in ACTH and cortisol, or stress hormones. This leads to clinical signs associated with delayed shedding, loss of muscle or top line, a rounded abdomen or pot belly and excessive fat deposits despite adequate caloric intake and exercise. A simple blood test to measure ACTH levels, along with clinical signs, is the gold standard for PPID testing.

We offer in-house ACTH testing and testing through Cornell Laboratories. Reach out to our office today at 480-621-9293 if you would like to schedule an appointment with one of our veterinarians or if you have any questions. 📞

🔸 For some, the week after Thanksgiving is the time we start thinking about putting the Christmas lights up.
For horse people looking ahead to breeding their mares, however… the week after Thanksgiving means it’s time for a very different kind of light fixtures: the ones we turn on our mares to prepare them for breeding season.

If you hope to breed your mare in early spring of 2025,
she needs to go under artificial lights. Mares started under lights in the first week of December will likely be cycling by mid February. Natural daylight must be supplemented with artificial lighting for a total of 16 hours of light each day. 💡

• Mares not placed under artificial lights will typically start cycling naturally by mid-March.
The light must be bright enough to read a book in each corner of the stall.

Is more than 16 hours of light better? NO. Leaving the lights on all night will disrupt your horse’s sleep pattern.

Do you have questions about how to get your mare ready for the upcoming season? Call our office to schedule a visit.

🔸 Now that the weather is cooler, we have some tips on how to cool your horse down after a ride in colder temperatures…

❄️ Plan Ahead
Give yourself enough time to properly cool your horse down after your ride. At least 10-15 minutes of walking to allow the heat built up in your horse’s muscles to dissipate.
❄️ Wait until your horse is dry under the cooler before you blanket him or her. Putting a blanket on a wet horse will just keep the moisture underneath the blanket and will make them stay wet (and cold!) for longer.
❄️A cooler draped over your horse’s hindquarters and pulled around your waist will keep you both warmer in very cold climates (Prescott/Flagstaff - we are looking at you!)
❄️Cover the damp saddle area with a fleece cooler as soon as you remove your tack to protect your horse from the elements
❄️Toweling your horse may speed up the drying process

Though our weather can be temperate in Arizona most of the year, it can get pretty cold in the desert. These tips will be helpful on those dry, frigid days!
