RHR is casually looking for a gentle lesson horse to join our very small and dedicated lesson program. Our lesson horses live outside 24/7 with free choice hay. Custom supplements when they work. We limit our lesson horses to 3-4 lessons a week. This could be a great opportunity for someone who owns a horse but can’t get out during the week to ride. We can offer boarding/hoof care at a discounted rate for “owned” horses in the lesson program.
That being said, soundness and gentleness is something we take very seriously. We want our students learning on happy sound horses.

From where I stand in order to improve welfare for horses the professionals need to come to some sort of agreement on a few things.

Professionals include: upper level competitive trainers/riders across all disciplines, veterinarians, licensed body workers, schooled dentists, maybe hoof care providers too!

Can we all agree that a horses are no where near fully mature at 2? We have the science to KNOW this is fact. Major key areas of the horses body don’t mature until 2-3 years later!

Can we all except that just because these are large animals doesn’t mean they don’t feel pain like we do. Watch a horse be stung by a bee; looks a lot similar to a person getting stung!

We all want to ride horses who truly are accepting of being ridden, right?

Can we all agree on those? These should be no brainers right?

Because maybe, just maybe we will have less sore 12 year old horses. Who have “some maintenance required”

Less crippled 6 year old race horses.

Can we avoid using outright painful equipment to force horses to submit? Equiptment that is scaring or causing blood. I handle a variety of horses with varying “behavior” problems. I don’t need to inflict pain on them in order to get “obedience”.

Can we we improve the life of the horses who are teaching our youth? So that our next generations do better than us? Ratherr then get the accostumed to seeing unhappy unwell horses.

It is coming down to the professionals to acknowledge and accept the facts. Society is watching these professionals closely. Professionals are forced to be more accountable for their actions because someone is always filming.

The more information spreads we can change the life for your average amateur horse and rider.

Know where you stand come learn the facts inside and out. We will be scratching the surface of equine wellness in our July class.
