12 rescues in just a few short weeks. Our medical fund has been depleted and we need your assistance. In 20 years, we have not seen this many equines come to us without prior medical care, even basic care. It’s disheartening and emotionally heavy for all our dedicated caretakers and volunteers. Sadly, even yesterday’s euthanasia and care was over $1000. It’s takes a village, and we our so grateful to you. Today, we ask for your support in donating to our medical fund, and support those most in need. Together, WE are Healing Hearts. ❤️

Oh these boys! From killpen to rescue, and so much more! Atlas and Apollo’s life started out unsteady and clearly without much human interaction. An unfortunate decision was made to bring these two young Belgian Draft’s to auction where illness and uncertainty lies. Thanks to the wonderful Singing Whale Rescue & Rehabilitation LLC, they were bailed and began their quarantine in Northern Arizona with Hearts For Hope Horse Haven. We are lovingly working hard to continue their healing, trust and health journey with us today. Together, WE are Healing Hearts ❤️

Dexter is still fighting for his life. We are giving him all the medical care and support we can at this time, and praying he can come through it. Our vet bill is over $1700 at this time and we could greatly use assistance for this sweet boy.

Yesterday, Momma Glitter was in severe distress due to colic. The wonderful Dr. G got his sweet mare through the worst of her discomfort and is back to today to help rid her of some additional sand in her belly. We will continue to watch this precious girl throughout the day- but we believe the worst is over! I am writing about the horrific abuse of horses and mules on the Havasupai reservation on the trail to Havasau Falls in Arizona. This brutality has been reported for decades, yet no one has done anything to protect these animals. The horses and mules are overloaded with tourist gear and are forced to haul it up and down a 16-18 mile steep, rocky and treacherous trail, often in triple digit temperatures. At the top of the trailhead, they often have no access to water.

Many are underfed, dehydrated and exhausted from the loads which shift around on their backs as they are forced to run on the trail. Some are tied tightly together which causes them to trip and fall, and many are physically punished with whips to keep going. This is just one of many reports from tourists who have witnessed the cruelty:

“ Hi, I just came back from a trip to Havasupai. I did not take any pictures of the horses but saw several with open wounds. We saw a trail of blood in the trail. Many horses were underweight and there was one heavy set rider who was running his pack string up and down the trail. He was kicking, whipping, and yelling at his horses. He passed us a couple times on our way in.”

The torture of animals is inexcusable. I realize that tribal law is separate, but that is no excuse for authorities to not step in when tribal laws aren’t being enforced. Please speak up for these hard-working animals that bring millions of dollars to the tribe yet are often worked to the point of collapse or death.

I would like to see the following rules implemented:

1. Adequate feed and water for all animals in the village.
2. Pack animals must be allowed to walk, not forced to run.
3. No tying of horses to poles for an extended time, and must have access to water and food.
4. No whipping or beating.
5. Injured or underweight pack animals must be given adequate care and rest.
