The illusion of experience

When you show up to a race or a rodeo do you immediately start cataloging all the people that look unfriendly or that look like they are so calm under pressure?

I read a book once that helped me so much!! The courage to be disliked.

Turns out we all basically think the same or similar things. We all don’t want to look foolish , be made fun of, or fail at our goals.

So stop allowing peoples facial expressions or lack thereof to sway you into thinking you’re being judged or hated on. They’re probably so deep in their own minds about not wanting to fail or be hated on that they have very little time left over to worry about anyone else.

Here’s where the illusion of experience comes in. I once saw a world champion in her pjs totally relaxed and bathing her horse at a rodeo. IT WAS 45 minutes BEFORE WE WERE UP!!!

I thought, I obviously have a lot of mental prep I need to do before I’m “might be running a wet horse” level of calm. Turns out, just like the rest of us, the world champion was doing her errands all throughout the truck trailer and barn to keep her mind occupied to avoid getting on too early.

See champions have it down. They appear cool, calm and collected. They appear to have ice in their veins. It’s not because they care less than anyone else - it’s because they’ve figured out how to get into flow state. They know where they need to be mentally to win.

They know if they can laugh and joke and get into the zone at a moments notice. They also know if they need to be off by themselves with very little interaction to stay laser focused.

Find your flow state and what makes you tick - AND THEN APOLOGIZE TO NO ONE! Get in your zone! Get your cheddar! And then you can be back to “non compete” mode with ease!

When you get really good at it you can dress crazy and throw a helmet on so you can be talked about by others so they forget their flow state rountine 😉
