Spending some time with Mayhem today. Between the grooming and resetting a shoe he threw from three weeks ago….he was really being a ham and showing his true personality!! We just thought we would share…

Four weeks post getting his new shoes, Cat was able to enjoy 10 minutes of free turnout time. He’s extremely smart and was very cautious about his new footing. His current lameness is to be expected, yet remarkably improved from last month. Please note, we never leave our critical rehabilitation horses unattended during limited turnout time. Cat has also progressed into a stall with access to a larger run. He is able to move freely inside and outside, without risk of overexertion. He does however to continue to crib lightly, so we would like to extend his ulcer treatment.
He has been on Gastrogard (Omeprazole) since his arrival, and we along with our vet feel strongly about continuing an additional 30 days. Stress can affect a horse’s gut and their ability to properly gain weight. Gastrogard helps lower the gut’s acid production allowing ulcers to heal and a horse to absorb proper nutrients and feel better overall! Ulcer treatment is one of the mostly costly parts of rehabilitation, yet truly a necessary part of keeping our horses comfortable. We always treat the whole horse, not just for a new set of shoes. An additional 30 days of treatment with cost is $600. That’s $40 per tube (Rx on Chewy, our vet charges $56/tube), dosing 1/2 tube daily.
Would anyone like to help with Cat’s ulcer treatment? If so, please consider a donation via our PayPal at https://www.paypal.me/ECEFArizona or via our website at www.ecefarizona.com and click on “Donate Now” on our home page. Please note your donation is for Cat’s ulcer treatment. Thank you!!!

Happy New Year from all of us at Echo Canyon Equine Foundation!!

Back in 2018, we retired our first arthrodesis horse, Baloney Mike.
Although we have previously shared Baloney’s story, he was retired from racing due to bilateral sesamoid fractures and a condylar fracture. Again, like Mayhem, Baloney’s rehabilitative care was complex, challenging and labor intensive. However, we would not change a thing, to see these horses like this… comfortable and thriving today.
We have recently had a few inquiries regarding our rehabilitative process and if we could share some
advice. Honestly, the best advice we can offer, as all horses’ cases may vary…we always recommend following your veterinary professionals’ treatment first, then ask for a referral to find the best corrective farrier in your area.
Critical rehabilitation cases can be extremely rewarding. Trust the process, have patience, but always put the wellbeing of the horse first.
Baloney is a permanent resident here with us, enjoying a life of leisurely turnout 24/7.
Just a handful of the thoroughbreds we have had the pleasure retiring, rehabbing or rehoming since 2015…and a few we remember in spirt.
Thank you to all the horses’ connections who have allowed Echo Canyon Equine Foundation, Inc. to transition your horses off the racetrack. It’s an honor to serve these athletes after their careers on the track have come to a close.
For everyone who has supported Malibu Mayhem’s, aftercare…THANK YOU! This video taken this morning is for you…Enjoy!❤️
Mayhem suffered a complete disruption of the left front fetlock suspensory apparatus and had arthrodesis surgery 1.24.2022.
From his surgeon, Dr. Ryan Carpenter “He looks great. Thank you for the updates. I love to see these guys.”
Almost a year to the day this massive gelding arrived at Echo Canyon Equine Foundation, Inc…Ekkelsia.
We are aware when to allow an animal to rest and provide a compassionate end to one’s suffering, however we too believe in the impossible! Ekkelsia is now a comfortable pasture puff thanks to dedication, hard work and the generosity of many individuals! Please see his radiographs in the comments (Ekkelsia had surgery 12/6/2021 to repair a right front complete displaced transverse fracture of the distal diaphysis of MC3 (complicated) and left front incomplete nondisplaced transverse fracture of the distal diaphysis of MC3.)
Thank you again to Lisa and Peter Eurton, Jeanne Schnell and 1/ST Aftercare for entrusting us to provide the critical aftercare Ekklesia required.
HOME PENDING -
I wish we could keep all the horse we retire, because Benny would sure be one of those horses! However those horses our veterinarian clears to start a second career, need to go on and find their own special person. Someone will be very lucky to call Benny their own.
Benny is a lovely 5yo, 16.3HH+ TB chestnut gelding. He has no known injuries or restrictions and has been retired from racing as of November 2022. Benny has over 90+ days of retraining which include arena work and exposure to solo trail rides. He is currently being ridden 4-5 days per week and will continue to flourish with a dedicated rider. He is very willing to please and picks up on training quickly. He has been ridden out alone, through washes and past heavy equipment, like a garbage truck….with no problems. Benny has also been turned out in a herd setting and is at the bottom of the pecking order. He is UTD on farrier, vaccines, deworming, dental, and has a current coggins. Radiographs are available.
Mid 4 🥕🥕🥕🥕 willing to negotiate to experienced home.
Please, serious inquiries only! Everyone’s time is valuable and our horses deserve dedicated homes.

Thank you all for supporting Malibu Mayhem and thoroughbred aftercare.
Echo Canyon Equine Foundation provides medical rehabilitation for the most critically injured ex-racehorses.
Two weeks ago we were contacted by a local rehab farm to assist with finding a couple horses homes. While we were there, they asked us if we knew of a home for a sweet filly.
Welcome home for the holidays Addyklim.
