Spending some time with Mayhem today. Between the grooming and resetting a shoe he threw from three weeks ago….he was really being a ham and showing his true personality!! We just thought we would share…

Four weeks post getting his new shoes, Cat was able to enjoy 10 minutes of free turnout time. He’s extremely smart and was very cautious about his new footing. His current lameness is to be expected, yet remarkably improved from last month. Please note, we never leave our critical rehabilitation horses unattended during limited turnout time. Cat has also progressed into a stall with access to a larger run. He is able to move freely inside and outside, without risk of overexertion. He does however to continue to crib lightly, so we would like to extend his ulcer treatment.
He has been on Gastrogard (Omeprazole) since his arrival, and we along with our vet feel strongly about continuing an additional 30 days. Stress can affect a horse’s gut and their ability to properly gain weight. Gastrogard helps lower the gut’s acid production allowing ulcers to heal and a horse to absorb proper nutrients and feel better overall! Ulcer treatment is one of the mostly costly parts of rehabilitation, yet truly a necessary part of keeping our horses comfortable. We always treat the whole horse, not just for a new set of shoes. An additional 30 days of treatment with cost is $600. That’s $40 per tube (Rx on Chewy, our vet charges $56/tube), dosing 1/2 tube daily.
Would anyone like to help with Cat’s ulcer treatment? If so, please consider a donation via our PayPal at https://www.paypal.me/ECEFArizona or via our website at www.ecefarizona.com and click on “Donate Now” on our home page. Please note your donation is for Cat’s ulcer treatment. Thank you!!!
