Last summer, Seeking Refuge found a home with our veterinarian’s awesome equine technician. Amanda and “Louie” have become a wonderful team over the past year.

As Arizonans eagerly await the arrival of fall's cooler temperatures, our equine companions are already exhibiting signs of their winter coats.

Many of you have contacted us for updates on a few of our horses and we assure you that our primary focus remains ensuring our horses' hydration and comfort levels. This transitional period necessitates heightened vigilance among horse owners, as reduced water intake can increase the risk of colic.

To guarantee the continued comfort and health of our equine companions, routine hoof care is crucial. In light of the racing-related injuries affecting horses like Mayhem, our farrier provides regular services every 4-8 weeks. During Mayhem's most recent visit, he received new shoes and 3D pads, and we took the opportunity to record his weight, which stood at a robust 1200lbs. He also still receives light sedation, as seen in this photo, to assure proper shoe placement.

Once the weather cools, we look forward to Mayhem starting under saddle. Our goal is for him to enjoy light trail riding.

With wildfires engulfing us here on the west coast, here is a quick reference guide from UC Davis Veterinary for horse owners regarding wildfire smoke and the hazard it can pose to horses’ health.

“Horses exposed to fire smoke can suffer respiratory injury of varying degrees, ranging from mild irritation to severe smoke inhalation-induced airway or lung damage.

Knowing what is normal versus concerning can help to know whether a veterinarian should evaluate your horse.

Particulates in wildfire smoke can build up in the respiratory system, creating health problems for people and animals.

As cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) are on the rise, it remains critically important that horse owners take steps to protect their equine friends (and their families) from mosquito bites. If you live in a region where mosquito populations persist well into the fall months, your veterinarian may recommend additional fall booster vaccinations against EEE/WEE and WNV (West Nile Virus).

If you don't know your horse's vaccination history or you are unsure whether they have received a certain vaccine, it's not too late to start from scratch with an initial series of inoculations followed by the appropriate boosters, as recommended by your horse doctor.

So, what is Eastern Equine Encephalitis?

EEE is a severe, viral disease affecting the central nervous system, and is transmitted to equids (and humans) by infected mosquitoes. There is no cure for EEE, and the mortality rate is 75-95% (in horses). Prevention through vaccination is key.

We have had many messages inquiring about Common Law Cat and how he is rehabbing. So here’s an update…

We understand it’s been exactly one year since he was found in the Bastrop kill pen in May 2023. He raced 40 times and won $135k before being dumped at the auction.

Well, this is Cat yesterday morning. He is currently very comfortable, clearly showing not only by how he now stands, but he’s bright eyed and inquisitive. We’ve noticed he is much more comfortable as he gets further into his shoeing cycle, which lead us to rethink his shoeing script. Establishing a proper angle and reducing the stress on the suspensory has resulted in a happy horse and less swelling from mid cannon bone down to his fetlock.

He still is a hard keeper, and a bit thin for our liking heading into summer here in the desert heat. He’s a light cribber, which doesn’t help, but we will continue on with Gastrogard and seek consult on a gastroscopy.

Our Bionic Boys…

Mayhem and Cat enjoyed some timeout together this morning. Both having had arthrodesis surgery, however rehabbing in two completely different manners. What they do have in common is the required corrective shoeing to assure their comfort on their rehabilitative journey.

Eddie Would Go was retired by ECEF Inc. from Turf Paradise in the fall of 2017. He was adopted by Lori in April of 2018.

We were once again glad to assist in supporting 23 cats fly from Kuwait to the United States for advanced veterinary care, and to find safe permanent homes.

All the cats were current on vaccines, tested negative for feline leukemia and FIV, and have been microchipped prior to travel. They then travel with vaccine passports and Certificates of Veterinary Inspection for export from Kuwait.

Thank you to the rescuers of Kuwait, Companion Clinic, Grateful Hearts Animal Rescue and the numerous donors and sponsors who made this all possible.

We also wanted to share photos of Mayhem’s hoof/heel growth and overall improvement of his surgical site. There is no photoshopping and altering of these photos…this is strict corrective farrier work and 24/7 free movement in turnout.

Our farrier and veterinarians are extremely pleased with Mayhem’s rehabilitation and his level of soundness. Traumatic injury rehabilitation can be labor intensive yet extremely rewarding.

Malibu Mayhem sustained a biaxialsesamoid bone fracture and damage to the suspensory ligament resulting in complete disruption of the suspensory apparatus of the left front limb on 1/23/21. He had left front fetlock arthrodesis surgery on 1/24/21.

Even though the weather has been less than delightful here in Arizona, horse care must go on. Monday is farrier day here and Mayhem is due for his fancy 3D shoes.
