Her horribly underrun heels are back where they belong. Her whole foot has shifted dramatically back in line. She has had some separation that’s growing out. We still have about 1/3 of the hoof to go.
I’m so pleased with how far she has come though!

Sometimes it’s important to remember where we started when we get frustrated and wish for perfection.
I want to wave a magic wand over this horse’s feet so badly. But we are three trims in and they are definitely improving- just not perfect.
All photos are of his front feet from before the first trim to after the last three trims.
Progress! We aren’t there yet but we are making some positive strides.

It’s a start. I removed this guy’s shoes and then took his toe back a bit. He has no heel, so I left that alone. He will get rough and ugly in the coming weeks as he breaks out around the nail holes. My prayer is that he will adjust, start to grow a heel, and stay comfortable enough to get through the transition. He lives on sandy loam, so that sure helps.
Transition to barefoot is sometimes easy and sometimes no picnic. Boots help. Staying on top of thrush helps. Understanding that your horse can’t do the work he usually does, immediately after removing shoes, helps.
At worst, we can always give their hooves some time to rebuild tissues and if they need shoes to cope with their work, then have them put back on.
And of course, at best, they develop a better foot and thrive bare after their transition time.
I’ll do my best with my part of the equation.

Left, just after removing shoes.
Right, after a little bit of trimming at the toe.

This is so helpful.

Woot woot!! Celebration time! This girl has been fully rehabbed from extreme obesity and laminitis to the point she laid down constantly, to fit and happy feet again! Bless all the folks involved who helped it happen. I thank God for each one.
She was taken off grass and had room to roam with several other horses. Once she was able, she even learned to pull a cart. A year later with exercise and a different diet, she is unrecognizable.

It’s so fun when horses transition so beautifully out of shoes. Top row, after removing shoes and trimming six weeks ago. Bottom row, after trimming today (where I mostly just cleaned up what she did, herself). She broke off a little shorter at the nail holes than I may have trimmed her, but she’s getting around beautifully. And look how much she developed the back of that foot!
I’m hoping to let her have a little more wall than she allowed herself when she did her self trim, but she’s moving comfortably.
Hooves are amazing structures.

Pretty nice progress photos on this mare.

Her heel is moving back under her instead of in front of her, the frog is more robust, and the heel is opening up. Her whole body has been in a state of healing. It’s a wonderful thing to witness. Her owner has done a lovely job.

This owner got diligent about thrush.
Kudos to her for the hard work. It sure paid off.

She has been loved and cared for, beautifully.

On the last day of 2023, I got to assist this horse in getting her foot back under her instead of in front of her. All four appear to be negative or close to neg in palmar/plantar angles.
I will see her again in a few weeks and hopefully be able to make some more adjustments.
