Everyone knows not to leave the dog in a hot parked car. What you may not realize is that leaving the dog in a cold parked car isn't much better. The car essentially becomes a refrigerator. Assuming your dog will be fine in the cold car could result in a serious health problem for your dog.

How cold is too cold to walk the dog? This is a tricky question as it really depends on the breed and size of your dog. Larger dogs won't be affected by the cold as much as smaller dogs. Certain breeds have a natural high resistance to the cold. Don't forget to factor the wind chill into the decision to walk the dog. Frostbite can set in quickly. The best answer we can give you is that if it's too cold for you to be out, it's too cold for the dog. We usually say if the temp/wind chill is below zero, don't walk.

We got a few more tips for you before the holidays.

1. Don't feed the dog sugary snacks or cookies. Sugar is terrible for you dog. Don't do it.

2. Watch out for the salt. Many people serve meats and cheeses during the holidays. Too much salt can cause all kinds of digestive issues. Don't do it.

3. Depending on what you're serving for a protein, you might have some cooked bones leftover. DO NOT GIVE THEM TO THE DOG. Don't do it.

4. Booze. Most people will be serving alcohol over the holidays. Do not give ANY to the dog!!!! Your dog's kidneys weren't meant to process alcohol. It could kill the animal. So If you're enjoying some booze like Slick Johnson, don't give any to the dog!!! Don't do it.

We'll be back after the holidays with more tips and hints.

Dogs are known to get spooked by sounds/sights when out walking. This time of year can increase the chances of your dog getting frightened while exercising. Traditional and inflatable Christmas lawn ornaments can seriously freak out the dog. Make sure when you're approaching them you hold the leash a little tighter. You don't want to run around trying to find the dog on cold day, or not find it at all.

We're sure by now the dog has gifts under the tree. The pup probably has more coming from loved ones. Make sure not to give your dog all his loot at once. If she receives treats, DO NOT overload your dog with snacks. This can lead to digestive issues or worse. If your doggie receives toys, make sure to limit the number of toys your dog has at any given time. This makes sure the toys keep their value and the dog will act like they are brand new each time he gets to play with them.

If you are hosting Christmas this year, understand there are some things to keep an eye on with your pet.

1. People coming and going. The door will be opening and closing multiple times, giving your dog mutliple chances to bolt out the door. With the cold temps outside, this is even more crucial that usual. Keep an eye on the front door.

2. Excitement. The dog is sure to get over excitement with all the guests in the house. This means the dog may be jumping up, playing rough, barking, etc. Pay attention to the pup and what he's up to.

3. Food. People always want to feed the dog extra food. Make sure the snacks the dog is receiving are healthy and safe. Some foods are toxic for dogs, while others will result in an upset stomach.

4. When opening gifts, make sure the dog doesn't digest any paper or tape.

Of course you're going to put ornaments on the tree. Most ornaments are spherical and hang on a little metal hook. Some have glitter on them and some are made of glass. Almost all ornaments can become a problem for your pets. Cats LOVE to mess with the Christmas tree ornaments. They love to bat them around and knock them off the tree, allowing them to play with them. Dogs just may mistake those ornaments for their favorite toy, the ball. Make sure to hang the ornaments high off the ground away from the pets.

By now you may have gifts under the Christmas tree. While they may not seem like they would be an issue, they could be. Your dogs and cats don't understand that wrapped box is for your niece. They just know it showed up on the floor. There is tape on almost every package that is toxic and can cause digestive issues and the paper can be a blockage issue if enough of it is consumed. And don't forget some people give food as a gift. It may not be a bad idea to ask people if there is food in those boxes. It may be difficult enough to keep the pets away from the gifts to begin with, let alone when they smell food!

Everyone puts lights on the Christmas tree. But those lights could cause some problems for your furry little family members, both cats and dogs. Your pet may get tangled up in the lights, they may chew on string of lights which can end with a fatal shock, and they can even chew on them and start a fire. The solution? Don't put lights all the way down to the bottom of the tree. Stop hanging the lights about 3 ft. off the ground.

Broke a guitar string last night. I think the dogs were happy about it.

Tinsel. It's a traditional Christmas decoration, but it can cause serious issues for pets. This includes dogs and cats. Tinsel can get caught around your pets tongue. It can get caught in the teeth causing issues with gums. And if swallowed it can cause serious intestinal issues. If it doesn't pass through your dog, it can cause incisions in the intestines. It can also cause a blockage, which may result in a rupture.

Make sure to keep this out of reach of pets and monitor it daily.

It's cold and windy. Make sure to put a coat on your small dog if needed!

Christmas is coming and that means a Christmas tree. If you have chosen a live tree, understand there are possible issues that can arise with your dog. Christmas tree sap is toxic to dogs and can cause vomiting and even depression. The needles can also pierce the intestinal track, causing digestive issues. And don't forget, you just brought a live TREE in the house, and dogs love to p*e on trees. Try to keep the dog away from the corner that has the tree.

Hu***ng. It's embarrassing and gross. It's not "normal" or "what dogs do". Hu***ng/mounting outside of mating is not about s*x. It's about dominance, which can easily be triggered by excitement. Hu***ng a toy is a problem, hu***ng people is really a problem. Make sure to get your dog altered, but be warned that altering a dog won't stop this behavior altogether. Correct the dog and stop it...........You know who I'm talking to.

Thanksgiving week is upon us, and we got a special food tip for your pup. Canned pumpkin can have all kinds of benefits. It can help with diarrhea and constipation. It has fiber and beta-carotene, which his body will convert to vitamin A. Now, as always, don't go overboard. Too much Vitamin A can be toxic for dogs. If you have a small dog, give him 2 teaspoons a day. Large dogs can get a couple tablespoons.

Make sure to get plain canned pumpkin, not canned pumpkin that's ready to make pie. It contains salt, spices, sugar, and other stomach irritants.

Try to use affection as a reward for training, not treats. You may not always have treats on you, or the dog may not respond if he knows you don't have a snack. ......Mallory.

Those collars and leashes can get pretty dirty/stinky! No one wants to put a stinky dirty collar back on a clean dog after a bath. So, how do you wash a collar or leash. The easiest way is to just use soap and water in the sink or a bowl of water. Don't put them in the clothes washer. That's a good way to ruin a leash . . . . and a washer.

Try to feed your dog at the same time everyday. This will set a routine for the animal to void its waste. We recommend feeding twice a day. Early morning and early evening. Be sure to give your pooch about 45-60 min after feeding for the digestive system to process the food. Then let your buddy out before you leave in the morning. Feeding in the early evening gives your little buddy a chance to void all his waste before everyone goes to bed.

Here's a few training tips.

1. Exercise your dog before training. This will help with your dogs focus. Especially if she's a high energy dog. Go walk, then train.

2. Keep the training fun and upbeat. Don't get frustrated or angry. The dog won't want to work with you if it sees you're upset.

3. Take advantage of every training opportunity. People coming in the house, food present, loud noises near, etc. These moments are the best training chances.

Don't over use your verbal commands. If you're asking your dog to sit and he's not, don't continue to rapid fire that command. He will start to ignore the command as it loses its power. If he doesn't sit, stop, take a beat, and give the command again.

Those walks can get pretty cold. Make sure you dress in layers. This not only keeps you warm, but it allows you to p*el off layers as you get warm. We also recommend the outer layer be black/dark colored. Black hat, black coat, black pants, black gloves, etc. Let that sun heat you up!
