The heat isn’t going to be letting up any time soon, so here’s some tips to keep you and your horse cool!

1. Hydration! Make sure you are getting plenty of water, and offer your horse water regularly.

2. Hose off your horse multiple times to cool them down. When you rinse your horse, scrape off excess water and let them stand for a few minutes. Then, run your hands over them. Still hot? Then rinse again and repeat until they start to feel cool to the touch. In this weather, it may multiple rounds to truly get them cooled down!

3. When riding, focus on short bits of quality work and give lots of walk breaks. If you watch your horse’s breathing, you’ll likely find that it doesn’t take long for them to start breathing hard in the heat. Shorter bursts of work with walk breaks in between will help keep them (and you!) from overheating.

4. Get creative! Even on days that are too hot to get a full workout done, you can still help your horse’s fitness with groundwork and other activities. Experiment and find what works for you and your horse.
