One of the best ways to help keep your pet healthy is to keep them an ideal weight.

Maintaining an ideal weight is crucial for senior pets because excess weight can significantly increase their risk of developing serious health issues:
- arthritis
- diabetes
- heart disease
- breathing problems
- even cancer

Ultimately impacting their quality of life and potentially shortening their lifespan. Keeping them at a healthy weight helps manage existing conditions and prevents further complications, allowing them to live longer and more comfortably

So don’t kill them with kindness! They can skip out on table scraps and excess treats! 🍔🍗

Mobility is important and we know that routine exercise will help keep our senior friends mobile! Here are some easy exercises you can do at home with your pet. 🧘

Dr. Emily’s favorite is Backward Walking. Simply having your dog walk backwards will engage different muscles and coordination and can be extremely helpful in keeping them limber. 👟

Senior dogs are prone to mobility issues. Research suggests that over 50% of dogs over the age of 7 will develop some form of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common form and occurs when the cartilage of the joint breaks down over time. This can lead to inflammation, fluid retention, bone spurs and ultimately- chronic pain.

This is a good picture to show some very minor things you can do to help your senior pet that can help tremendously.

🚨 If you currently feed your pets raw food, or give raw milk, especially From Northwest Naturals, please be aware of the recall. This food has been linked to spreading highly pathogenic avian influenza (bird flu, or H5N1) to house and barn cats, and a cat in Oregon has sadly passed from this.

Cats are unfortunately very susceptible to this virus and it can be deadly. This flu is responsible for the recent outbreak and subsequent deaths of 20 big cats (cougars, bobcats, servals, tigers) at a wildlife sanctuary in Washington recently. 😢

Raw foods come with a number of inherent risks, and while many animals can digest raw meats- the risk of pathogens and potential zoonosis (transmission from animals to people) tends to outweigh the possible benefits. We should note that home cooked and fresh diets, if formulated properly, may have benefits for your pets. The cooking process removes a lot of risk! It’s best to reach out to your veterinarian to discuss feeding recommendations for your pet.

The product was sold through distributors in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.

🐈 The Feline Grimace Scale 🐈

This is one of the many tools used to assess pain in cats. It is important to note that this may not apply to all cats, especially if the pain is something more chronic. But it can be helpful in assessing pain and to be aware of these subtleties.

🐈‍⬛ Animals hide pain, especially animals like cats. So how can you tell if your older kitty is in pain?

🐾 Behavior Changes: not as playful, not grooming themselves, overgrooming a particular area, hiding more, hesitating before jumping or climbing stairs, not jumping on vertical surfaces anymore (furniture/ counters/ etc), change in attitude- short tempered/ aggressive, sleeping more, limping, tail flicking

🐾 Eating or drinking less

🐾 Vocalizing: meowing more, crying/ yowling, hissing/ growling

🐾 Urinating or defecating outside of the litter box (especially if they are going next to the box)

🐾 Posture/ Facial expressions: hunched posture, not stretching, grimace expression, squinting eyes

🐈 The first hurdle is to be able to recognize pain. Once you can do this you can contact us (or your regular vet) to discuss treatment options that are right for your kitty. 💛

How do dogs react to acupuncture? Well this is how. Winston currently has about 13 needles placed at various points… but you can’t even see them through all of his floof. He enjoys his sessions every couple of weeks to help keep him moving. Really, he just loves attention. 🤣 I love this big handsome boy so much!!!
