Love gentle giants? These girls are the best! Myka and Tova, our 3-yr old Great Dane mix sisters are sweet, gentle, affectionate, calm, housetrained, leash trained and exceptionally well-behaved. Found by a good Samaritan shortly after hurricane Helene, they stuck together against all odds. Thankfully, they found their way to Almost Home Dog Rescue NC and are thriving! Now all they need is a home to call their very own. After all they've been through, these bonded sisters need to be adopted together. Think two large dogs might be too much? Think again! Not these beauties. Myka & Tova are indoor dogs who just need a yard with a 6' fence to run and play. Please share this post and help us find Myka and Tova the family they deserve. They are super friendly with people large and small and do well on pack walks with most calm dogs. No cats, tho. They love chasing them a bit too much. 😍

November is Adopt a Senior Pet month. It's been almost a year since we rescued Barney and he is still looking for his forever home! This easy going 15-yr. old guy is only 20-25 lbs., super low-maintenance and just wants his own person to love. Please message us if you'd consider giving Barney the love and home he deserves for the rest of his days. Sharing is caring!

The power of fantastic fosters and a helper dog (stick with the video; it’s hard to record 2 dogs with one hand)…

We rescued Millie from Pickens County, SC Animal Shelter just a few days ago. She was completely shut down and heartworm positive. The staff is incredible, keeping Millie up front with them in a quiet environment and providing heartworm treatment once we were able to commit to rescuing her. Just look at her 3 days later in the care of Steph & Danny, our fosters and their dog Sam.

It's Tongue Out Thursday, and who better to shower you with kisses than our sweet Maggie Sue!

Maggie Sue is as a wonderfully affectionate Labrador mix who loves to be where the action is. Playful, cuddly and perpetually happy, this 15 month old girl brightens up even the gloomiest of days. Maggie has a knack for making friends instantly -- with humans, dogs and even with our chill resident kitty. Sleek and fit, she is a trim 42 lbs and is equally happy playing ball in the backyard, going for a leisurely leash walk, or snuggling on the couch with her favorite human.

GREAT DANE UPDATE: These girls are beyond sweet. They’re settling in beautifully and love everyone they meet. We’ve learned their given names are Myka (brindle) & Tova (black/ white). They are from Black Mountain but were given to another couple a few months prior to hurricane Helene as they were outdoor dogs during the day and kept getting out of their fenced-in yard. Unfortunately, no one has come forward to claim them so they are available for adoption to the right home. We took the girls for a wellness check and vaccinations yesterday. They still need to gain at least 10 lbs each and Tova is HW+ (pre-treatment starting this week) but are otherwise healthy, 3-yr old girls. Interested in adopting these amazing Gentle Giants?

These two beautiful yet emaciated Great Dane mixes (females) are now in the care of Almost Home Dog Rescue NC . They were found in Balsam Grove on Macedonia Church Road, Transylvania County, NC on 10/26/24. Temporarily named Athena & Pandora, these Greek goddesses are incredibly sweet, well-mannered and know many training cues. It sure seems that they are beloved pets. Please help us find their family by sharing! Until then, they'll receive the best of care. If we can't find their original 'owners', we'll be on the hunt for amazing homes for the girls beginning the first week in November after their stray hold has expired.

Kelsey & Copper - A Love Story
Hey Almost Home Pack! I just received this heartwarming video from one of my favorite county adoptions and just had to share. It makes my heart so happy and have no doubt you'll be bursting with joy as well. You see, Copper was a dog at the shelter that had been there entirely too long. He's a big, beautiful boy that was surrendered because his family couldn't get him off the couch (seriously?). He was also a tougher boy to place because he's not dog friendly as he had never been socialized as a pup. If memory serves me right, it took over a week to get him out of his kennel because he was so freaked out in the stressful shelter environment. Lucky, for Copper, Kristen Hewitt, a dedicated volunteer who has the magic touch with frightened dogs finally wooed him out of his kennel and we slowly began to see his personality emerge. Unfortunately, Copper didn't show well because he needed time to trust new people and would literally lay down like an 80 lb. sack of potatoes and refuse to move if he wasn't with his favorite people. County animal shelters don't have the luxury of choosing the animals in their care to place for adoption. Open admission shelters have a constant stream of stray and surrendered dogs and cats that arrive often through no fault of their own. There is only so much space for animals and if not rescued or adopted, they are forced to make room for the constant influx of new animals arriving and needing their help. In Copper's case, it was the last weekend we had to find placement for him and we were doing everything in our power to find his person - we simply knew he or she was out there. After boosting a Facebook post on Copper to widen our audience, Kelsey Reneé McGaha, a.k.a. Copper's Angel walked in the door. She wanted to save a dog and somehow knew that Copper was the guy for her. Fast forward to today, several months later and you can see that this is a match made in heaven. There is a person or family for every dog and Kelsey and Copper have bonded more than I could possibly have imagined. The video and photos below tell the story. Kelsey, you and Copper are the perfect example of why Almost Home Dog Rescue NC is being created today. Give that big hunk an extra hug from us tonight, would you?
