Did you know…Walking or exercising your dog right after they eat, especially for large breeds, can lead to serious condition called bloat or GDV (gastric dilatation-volvulus). This life -threatening condition causes stomach to twist, cutting off blood flow. Dogs can die within hours of developing the condition.

Stay safe and follow dog’s natural behavior. Exercise before feeding followed by rest or sleep. Dogs need their beauty sleep of at least 16-18hrs/day.

Penny's transformation is truly inspiring! Her positive attitude and eagerness to learn have made her a star in our rehabilitation and training program. We're excited to share her journey and can't wait to see her find the perfect family to love and care for her.

We’re on Day 5 and after some much needed decompression and trust-building exercises, we moved on to walking and pack integration.
Panny has an awesome laid back energy while being goofy and fun when playing. Her favorite seems to be a game of fetch. She’s mastering “sit, down, wait and come”. And as soon as my new raised bed gets delivered we’ll be working on “place”, although she already seems to be an expert at it. I have some great videos which I’ll post later.

By the way, this is Penny, a rescue from Lockhart Animal Shelter, currently with Method Dog Training for board and train while searching for a dedicated foster or forever home. Stay tuned for her daily progress! Method Dog Training

Day 0 - slow and relaxed integration, with lots of rest and security. Building trust while promoting calmness.

Penny is a GDS, about 2-3yo, approx 70lb, spayed.
Very gentle, playful and seems to be motivated by attention.

Another heat advisory!!!
We all know that “hot streets can burn your dog’s feet”. But we still have to walk our dogs. So here’s what to do.

#1 Walk during cool times of the day.
I see so many people taking their dogs for walks 4 to 6 pm. Those are the hottest times.
So take your walk either early in the morning (before noon anyway) or after sun sets.

#2 Check the temperature of the surface.
No thermometers needed, just your bare feet. If you can’t stand or walk on the surface for few minutes without shoes then it’s too hot for your dog.

#3 Use paw protection for your dog.
A wax balm is probably the easiest, but there are also single use paw adhesive, which are good for aging dogs who have trouble gripping the floor, or some booties, but we know not all dogs like them and it takes a bit of patience and practice.

Can I make my dog a service dog? This question comes up a lot. Most service dogs start out from a specifically bred litter. There are some jobs that rescue dogs could be trained to do. But this type of training is certainly not a passive hobby, it needs dedication and stamina from both the handler and the dog. Which is why, just slapping a vest on a dog that says “service dog” is irresponsible and disrespectful.
