you struggle with your dog pulling, barking, or jumping on walks? Do you wish your dog would be more calm and attentive to you? If so, you might be missing a crucial step before you even leave the house: calming your dog down.
Many people focus on the walk itself, but not on how the walk actually starts. Dogs need to be in a calm state of mind to achieve a calmer walk or to be able to learn how to be calm on a walk. If your dog is too excited, anxious, or fearful when they see the leash, they will have a hard time focusing on you and following your cues.
So how do you calm your dog down before a walk? Here are some tips:
- Act calmly and quietly when you call your dog for a walk. Don’t make a big fuss or use a high-pitched voice.
- Ask your dog to sit and stay while you put the collar and leash on them. If they get up or wiggle, wait until they settle down before you proceed.
- Don’t attach the leash every time your dog sees it and goes crazy. This will only reinforce the behavior. Instead, only clip the leash when your dog is calm and relaxed.
- If your dog is still too excited, practice some obedience commands or tricks before you head out. This will help your dog focus on you and burn some mental energy or simply wait them@out until they settle naturally.
- ***Be prepared to abandon the walk if your dog does not calm down or listen to you.*** This will teach your dog that being calm is the only way to get what they want.
By taking some time before the walk to calm your dog down, you will set the tone for a more enjoyable and productive walk. Your dog will learn to associate the leash with calmness and respect, and you will have a better bond with your dog.
