Whipstalls Apocalyptic Pixie scored a 110/112 for a NAVHDA Natural Ability Prize 1. Pixie has been the most consistent dog, what I see during training is what I can expect in the field and saw during the test. She is animated in the field, prancing through the grass, one judge asked if she had a hurt foot and I told him no that's just Pixie prancing through the field finding birds, which she did her usual and found them all.
The track worried me, when I released her to track, she took off into a search, running around and sniffing random area's, she had to p**p. Once that was complete, she came back and got on the track, didn't quite finish the track out and this is where she dropped her 2 points and little extra weight, it was a good track and what I expected to see from her.
My biggest concern for Pixie was the swim portion, I had yet to get her to swim for just a bumper. She would go in after a bird or wings tied to a bumper, but just a bumper wasn't worth it to her if I didn't follow the progression from bird, to wings, to bumper.
As we approached the pond I told the judges that I was probably going to embarrass myself getting Pixie fired up to swim after the dummy and to please refrain from laughing until the show was over. I grabbed the bumper that matched the bumper I have trained with, commenced to making funny noises and running up and down the bank teasing her. Tossed the bumper a short distance into the pond, she entered the water and stopped just as the water got to deep to walk. Pixie turned around and came out, I grabbed another bumper and started teasing her again and she had no interest, at this point I feel a little dread. Then Pixie went back into the water and started pawing toward her bumper, I didn't move or make a noise, she made the small move to get the bumper, not quite a full swim, I grabbed the bumper when she came out and started playing again, now she was fired up. Tossed the bumper in the water and it was a short throw, she swam a bit but judges felt it wasn't quite enough. Pixie brought the bumper to me and was ready for more, I made the throw a little further and she hit the water with no fear this time, the 4th throw Pixie hit the water at full speed and completed her swim portion with a score of 4. Judges told me if they could award points for a show I would have gotten them.
