Heartworm Season is Right Around the Corner!

Year around preventive is a must anymore. These crazy warm days are nuts this winter!

Why Worry About Heartworm?

It is that time of the year! The mosquitoes are out! Mosquitoes transmit heartworm disease by biting an infecting the dogs and cats, then passing the infection to other dogs they bite. Because it is spread by mosquitoes from infected dogs to healthy ones, even "House Dog" which make the occasional trip outside are at risk. Some mosquitos have a flight range of over a 15 miles, enabling them to spread the infection over a great distance.

Heartworm can kill or permanently disable your animal by impairing the function of heart, lungs, kidney and circulatory system. A mosquito will bit, get into the blood stream and Then developing heartworm will migrate to the animals heart, where they can grow up to 14 inches as they mature. Obvious sins of the disease may not appear for up to a year after they have been infected.

In advance stages, heartworm causes frequent coughing, labored breathing, poor endurence and weight loss. But you may not see any signs before it's too late. Once diagnosed, the treatment treatment can be dangerous and costly.

Prevention is easy, giving your pet their monthly treatment to prevent the disease is a big factor. There are many preventive, so ask we can recommend the best one to suit you and your pets. Also annual testing is helps us find the disease. Waiting two years or more means that the animal could be infected for a longer period of time and more damage is done. We follow the American Society for Prevention of Heatworms regulations.

This is a 9 week old female kitten. She is wormed, tested feline leukemia and Fiv, 1st CVR-C vaccination , and flea treatment. She is a mover and a shaker. She has had the run of our clinic and holds her own with the 3 adult neutered males that we have. She is very playful and on the move. We are looking for a forever home for her. Adoption fee is $100. This is "Hank" . He is a young rescue who was 1 of 6 puppies raised by CVP and has been fostered since 8 weeks by 2 great ladies. They take him to the C.R. Market for socialization and have 2 dogs of their own. He is looking for a forever home. I adopted his sister and she is loving and sweet and loves people and dogs. Blue Pearl Veterinary Specialty Hospital Cedar Rapids dates of upcoming closures. This is for their emergency service only. Internal medicine and Dermatology remain open for appointments. It is VERY important that pet owners from around Eastern Iowa receive this information in case your pet has an emergency. The hospital only posts closures the day they are closed and we feel more time and information is needed for pet parents to prepare for alternate plans. We will keep you updated. This hospital is in crisis due to a lack of staff and doctors. This is happening around the country and we can’t lose our access to emergency and critical care in and around the Cedar Rapids area, Iowa’s second largest city. Iowa Veterinary Specialists in Des Moines is open and staffed. 515-280-3100.
Lloyds Veterinary Medical Center at Iowa State in Ames can also be called though they limit their emergency intakes based on staffing. 515-294-4900.
Bright Eyes and Bushy Tails in Iowa City can take emergencies. they are open 8am-8pm. Their number is 319-351-4256.
The sad reality is we do not expect this to improve in the future.
